I just moved to the B750 series, and hallelujah you can adjust picture settings in Game Mode. Samsung has to give you a reason to spend more money, right? I do think it's a joke, and one of my biggest pet peeves and biggest reasons NOW NOT to buy an A650 if you're a gamer.

I also tried the VGA cable trick (too blurry), and the setting the HDMI to name it PC and that was WAY too blurry. I just gave up on the A650.

Hey William, is it true you still can't use "Movie" mode or the "Warm" settings with the B's Game Mode?

Has anyone measured the lag introduced by component conversion to HDMI? My guess is that it would be pretty bad.

Reason I ask is that I have recently wall mounted the 52a650 and have a small raceway for cables and bough a denon avr590 for surround sound. I have the xbox hooked up through component 1080p into the denon, then HDMI2/PC to the tv, through a small raceway I have in the wall behind the TV.

I have the vga cable for the xbox, but can't fit it into the raceway in the wall.

So i'm trying to figure out if I should work harder at getting the VGA cable in the wall, or live with the setup.

First off, thanks to all contributors. This thread has been very helpful.

In an effort to sum things up, I am wondering what is the best HDMI port and setting to use for my PS3 Slim? I use it for gaming obviously, and also BD viewing pretty much 50/50. In this setup, which HDMI port should I use? What I have read so far suggests HDMI2, due to the ability to label it PC and reduce lag. I am running the 2007.0 FW on a 46A650.

But what about when watching BD movies? Would I have to "unlabel" PC from HDMI2 each time? Is there a better/faster method? I want to get the most out of the set for both scenarios, withut having to change ports/relabel inputs/etc. I apologize in advance if this has already been clearly shared, but all the discussion has got me doubting myself.

I'd appreciate any input and/or links to relevant posts. Thanks in advance.

Any HDMI input using "Game Mode" (the Ent. Mode on the remote) has minimal lag, depending on your sensitivity. If you want to watch a movie with AMP or video adjustments, you can switch out of Game Mode with the remote.

Thanks Daver. I was beginning to understand that based on scanning past posts. I also read your post about enjoying HDMI1's quality better than 2's. I guess the ultimate test is to see for myself on my set in my house's conditions. Since all the PS3 titles I own are 720p, I don't plan on using PC mode and just using Game mode. So does it matter which HDMI port I plug into? I am also in HDMI1 right now, simply because I didn't know any better when I set it up.

I guess this is where I am wishing for an official answer/documentation from Samsung on how each HDMI port gets processed differently, (if at all) regardless of what mode the set is in.

Set your PS3 to output BRD's at 24p (which is the correct setting). 24p will automatically boot the TV out of "PC mode" so you don't have to manually change anything. The problem with "Game Mode" is that you can't change any picture settings.

I've had this TV for almost a year now, and have had to play my PS3 on a computer monitor because I notice the lag enough.

Game mode doesn't quite to it for me.

Would a HDMI->VGA cable work well for the lag reduction? Everyone talks about a connecting via VGA, but never about these cables.

Something like this: http://www.buy.com/retail/product.as...ingid=44807698 (it says it can support up to 1080p... maybe things wont be washed out?)

or maybe even using a HDMI->VGA adapter. Would this reduce lag to 0-8ms? I use a HDMI->DVI adapter on my monitor and it works great. It seems silly that I haven't looked into fixing this on my TV yet.

1.0 out of 5 stars doesn't work..., April 30, 2009
By C. J. Gordon (Simi Valley, Ca United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The product description states, "This HDMI to VGA HD15 (Male) connects your HDMI-equipped device, HDTV (NOT FROM COMPUTER OR LAPTOP) to your monitor. The HDMI-equipped devices include...Playstation system"

Well, I connected this cable from my PS3 (in the above list) to my VGA input projection monitor (ACER XD1150) and the projector does not recongnize the signal. Based on the description I can think of no reason why this wouldn't work. The ACER takes the same exact input and works the same way as a computer monitor. The PS3 is an approved device. Yet, the signal is not recognized. My only conclusion is that the cord fails to convert the signal from HDMI to VGA making it useless.

1.0 out of 5 stars BS product, DO NOT BUY, November 23, 2009

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Issue is the cable is useless. After I ordered this cable I did some research and found out HDMI to VGA is impossible since one is analog and one is digital. Good deal should really end selling this product since it is BS. BTW I tried this on a PS3 to a VGA Monitor as per the discription. Dont waste your money

I'm somewhat new, but have lurked in this forum a while back looking for a HDTV.

I have the Ln32a650, Can anyone confirm that this set has hdmi2/pc? if so, what kind of settings to set for my ps3? Just curious since i'm going to try this when I get home.

it should have it just look on the back of the set and see if HDMI 2 is labeled HDMI 2/DVI

if so then rename the input PC and give it a 1080p game and it should not have much input lag

720p will not work, keep that in mind due to many ps3 games being 720p

If you're a gamer or interested in using an LCD TV as a primary monitor take a look at my thread on Input Lag

Can anyone tell me if this trick works for the PN (plasma) version of these monitors?

If so what are the latency results whether it be rb2 autocalibration or CRT test?

i highly doubt their plasmas have this mode because they operate very differently than LCD's do

Plasma typically also have less input lag than most LCD TV's so its unlikely to be necessary but you will want to look into the model your looking at to see how much input lag it has

If you're a gamer or interested in using an LCD TV as a primary monitor take a look at my thread on Input Lag

I saw a test done on the PNA650 plasma (I think I saw it in the PDP section) and it had similar numbers to the LNA650 LCD. I'll see if I can dig it up.

edit: LINK

The PNA650 and PNB650 seem to be fairly close to the LCD versions. They operate differently, but I'm sure their processing techniques are quite similar which I would imagine would have some effect on input lag.

No one has tested the Samsung LN40A530? I swear no matter what I do, Game Mode, HDMI2/PC, VGA.... the lag is all the same on Halo 3.

That is impossible. I have a ln32a450 (720p set) and once I enter PC Mode (HDMI1+1080p) I still get less ghosting on Halo 3. And you have a native 1080p set so you should get atleast 1 frame less response time then me.

I want to get an a650 but its really hard to find now, and want to know if any of the more current models (60hz/120hz) can do the same thing with only 1-2f of lag. Thanks!

Please let me know if this issue has been addressed.

I just picked up an Xbox360 Slim. I connect to to my Samsung LN46A650 and during the set up I like the Xbox auto select my display settings. It choses 1080p. But the viewable space is much large than my TV displays. It also seems like something is zoomed in or I'm seeing a 1080p image zoomed into 720p- even when a game is booted it.

I manually change my Xbox to 720p mode and everything looks perfect. I've been keeping it on 720p while I play.

1. Will I notice a difference between the 720p and 1080p during game play visually?
2. What could be causing this issue?

Thank you,

I finally got a cheap generic VGA cable (not the official Microsoft cable) to experiment with. Because I'm really into Pinball FX 2 at the moment, I wanted to eliminate as much lag as possible.

Unfortunately, the cheap $6 VGA cable was not the way to go - it works, but creates a faint ghosting double image. I'm assuming the official MS cable doesn't do this. Also, the A650's VGA input takes audio from a mini-jack, and the VGA cable has stereo RCA connectors, which means in order to use the VGA cable on this TV audio has to run through a different source other than the TV's speakers.

But I did try some Xbox 360 to A650 lag experiments, and came to same conclusion as others:
  • VGA cable to TV's PC input has pretty much zero lag.
  • HDMI to TV's input HDMI2 named "PC" at 1080p has close to zero lag.
  • HDMI in any HDMI input in game mode as minimal lag, YMMV.

I'm new here and have been very impressed with the answers to everyone's questions.

I hope this is not TOO far off topic.

I am thinking of buying a Toshiba 46G300U. It's all I can afford at this time.
Two questions:

Does this LCD have an HDMI2 port?
If so can it be labled to PC?

I'm worried about lag issues with this LCD and am hoping I can use this TV with my Xbox 360. I do Shooters only (Black Ops..etc) and don't want a lag issue.

Thanks for any help.

Did you try everything stated on this thread?

What TV did you end up with for gaming?
