I have a chance to get either one of these for 1450 USD. Do you all think the newer tech. on the Tosh out does the Sammy? What would you pick?

I recently owned a Toshiba XV540U and it was a nice TV but overall I liked Samsung better. You can't go wrong with either set though.

Why did you dump the Tosh? What do you have in its place now? Thanks.

That's a really tough call. In all honesty I think you'll be really happy with either. This is one that would really come down to personal decision. As far as the 240Hz vs. 120Hz; It's probably the difference between a 2ms monitor and a 4ms monitor. It's definitely working better, but hard to tell with the naked eye.

I have the Tosh, and I have to say that it has absolutely beautiful PQ. While someone in the 47ZV650U thread posted that they were able to see Flashlighting at the store (while fiddling with it for awhile), my set has no flashlighting or clouding. I'm really hoping to get my Xbox 360 soon so I can test gaming, but movies and sport (Hockey, Baseball, and Basketball so far) look great and have smooth panning.

Viewing angles on both sets are good.

*Personally I thought the Toshiba had the better picture.
*Personally I did not like the Touch of Color (red)
*And the Toshiba was cheaper.

While the Tosh has some goodies that the Sammy doesn't have, the Sammy also has some goodies that the Tosh doesn't have.

I would say that asking here will only get you positive results for both sets. The best way is for you to see the two together and weight the positives and negatives against each other. Which negatives you can live with and which you cannot.

I don't think either has enough advantage for someone to give you a definite answer.

PQ wise they are close. Toshiba still advertises the response time as 8ms.
The simulated 240Hz doesn't seem to make any difference when it is switched on/off.
SD content is definitely better on the Toshiba.

The Toshiba only has a now/next program guide vs. an extended guide in the Samsung.
The Toshiba doesn't have PIP.
The Toshiba is really comparable to the Samsung B640, that doesn't have the Content library, Internet TV or DLNA.

The Toshiba has, picture freeze and a multi function remote. Ease of use with the remote is about the same on both.

This is the first tv that is using a type of chip processing to make SD viewing much better.I am actually looking forward to its new line in 2010.This is when they will be introducing cell processing in a big way. This should make all video sources HD quality.I also am keeping a eye on RED RAY dvd players, and there ability to turn out 4k video from a regular dvd.

Digital does not equal HD.

We are going OTA digital, but will still have SD (480i) and HD sources being broadcast.
Most sub-channels and some main channels are SD and will remain so.

Satellite has always been digital, but at the same time SD.
Many people will still use a SD satellite tuner, cable box tuner or DVD player with an HD TV.

Ok, in that case the resolution+ will make SD feel like HD. But you know that cell type tech I don't think will turn up next year 2010. Do you have the article that shows that? I remember they(tosh) said it's still couple yrs away.

Dude, digital has nothing to do with SD. TV's will become all digital but can still be SD if the person doesn't want to pay extra for HD. 480 lines of resolution, which is considered SD, can and will be (for many people) their choice, even when all TV's become digital. Digital TV is not HD. Sheeesh. Time to wake up.

I think you are comparing a NEW Toshiba to a "refurbished" LN46A850. Most "reliable" sites are getting a minimum of $1600 for the 850's whereas the 46zv650's have a street price around that $1450 figure you mentioned. I'd rather have the new product myself rather than something that either had an issue or may still have an issue/.... personally.

From time to time, the Gene Pool could use a little chlorine ...

Both brand new!

Too bad this thread got off topic for many.
