Well, my first choice would be a $250,000 Runco front projector. But I thought the question was between the Sony V5100 or W4100...

Anyway, I voted V5100. If only 'cause they have a fix for 'auto dim', which the W4100s don't.
Otherwise the sets are pretty much the same.

I believe there's a difference in contrast ratio. Which isn't really noticeable.
Other than that, they're identical. So they should provide the same picture quality.

While I'm a fan of matte panels and Sony I have to say that no matter how many times (weekly) I cross compare the Sony S-Z4100/5100 or XBR6 up on that wall the Samsung B650/B750 and the Toshiba 650U blows them away especially in black levels and the lack of that DAMN HAZE Look.

The Samsung/Toshiba is also comparatively a helluva bargain often. I was big on an upgrade to the Z5100 or XBR9 until the pricing differential did a nearly two for one on a 40" panel that is not LED for secondary room viewing. I also overall find the Samsung's better than their own LED. Wanted to go Sony but virtually everywhere I look for reviews they are some of the worst I've seen on any Sony product line on that auto-dimming crap in the 5100 series. I've had auto dimming on my Sharps "OPC" and used it for five minutes and hated it and turned it off and never used it since and unfortunately Sony made a snafu making it a default feature that could not be disabled and who wants to buy a friggin TV and have to screw around with firmware - let Sony fix their model runs not the consumers unless they throw in a wireless dongle for free! Aren't you guys getting a little tired of damn firmware updates on everything that goes out BETA and we're the guinea pigs fixing their screw-ups and with Sony your also paying a price premium - I have a Sony BD350 that bricked due to firmwares and going around in circles trying to get the damn thing replaced..

These owners seem to think otherwise.

..and the FW fix for the 2009 models has, in my experience, on my 52V5100, gotten rid of auto-dim. Options like ACE are still available but, again, they are options.

Auto-dim was so annoying for me that I don't think I would take an '08 model unless it was free... and even then I'd just re-gift it to someone who wouldn't notice.

Pretty simple decision. Go for the new model V5100.

1. it has everything W4100 has
2. higher contrast ratio
3. fixed auto-dim issue with new fw.
