Does anyone know exactly what the different scene select settings do? Or should I just leave it on auto?

The demo video I saw in the showroom had motion sequences which could effectively classify sets without motion enhancements, sets with 120Hz interpolation, and sets with 240Hz interpolation. How much difference does it make with regular video? I don't know, but motion processing was a very important factor in my purchase decision, so I went with 240Hz. Price difference was about $200 for 40".

If you weren't sure how much of a difference it made with video, then why were you so sure you needed it?

The only way to be "sure" is to buy both TVs, calibrate them, and compare them side by side at home, but that's not really practical to me. I was willing to pay more than $200 based on the demo video alone. The difference was very obvious: clear on the 240Hz sets and blurry on the 120Hz sets (various models from 3 brands). Obviously regular video programs would not show the dramatic differences all the time, but even small improvements are well worth the additional cost to me.

Hi folks, I just bought a 52W5100 as my non-smoking gift to myself . . . going on 5 months now. I'm replacing a 40" Samsung LNS-4095. Thanks for all the input here, and when I get my unit set-up I'm sure I'll be posting more.

Is it just me or W5100 is underrated? Its hardly get talked here. Based on reviews I read, its a very good model. And its one of my options later this year/early next year.

I like my 52W" fine. It is overlooked because Bestbuy only carries the smaller 40W and maybe the 46W, (never seen it in the store), and the new W line came out after all the other 2009 lines.

but it can be discounted heavily and offers a good compromise between the IMO overpriced Z and 9 and the lesser featured S and V.

better hurry,- if you go by what Frys told me, they have removed all but a few Sonys from their site saying all new models are coming. they only have 1 V and the XBR10 last time I looked. but when the heavily discounted the 52W I got Sonystyle to match it.

Did you by chance get a good 52w5100, ie No Flashlighting or heavy clouding issues?

I, too, helped myself to the 52w5100 bc of the 1099 price tag at Fry's. I happened to snag a NOV 2009 model and I still have flashlighting and medium grade clouding issues

stating prices isn't kosher here but I never saw the 52w that low at Frys. mine was a great price tho.
mine had some clouding, but I lightly massage them out with a microfiber. and they tend to diminish over time. mine are about 80% better than they were after 2 months or so..

I just watched The Dark Knight on our family's new 46W5100. Great picture, decent viewing angle, but unfortunately there is some clouding around all four corners. I'm not sure how bad it is exactly, but it is slightly distracting during dark scenes and noticeable during the credits. During the 2.40:1 scenes of The Dark Knight, there are two patches along the top bar that are not as black as the rest of the top bar. Then again, you would have to be looking for them to notice the issue.

Has this issue gradually become nonexistent for those who have W5100's with this issue? What is the reason for this problem anyway and how can it be cured? Does general TV viewing help or would watching darks treat the clouding better than bright colors, or vice versa?

I have 5 LCD TVs from 3 different manufacturers. Every LCD I have has lighter areas at the corners or edges, but it really isn't noticeable at all except in very dark scenes or when there is no picture in those areas. Even then, it really is only noticeable in a darkened room. Actually, I think people make too big a deal about it. It really doesn't bother me. From what I have seen, I think it is just part of the technology. Even with that flaw, I think LCD TVs are awesome compared to giant CRTs. I am thrilled with the new flat TVs, all of them!

OK guys, just joined the W5100 club... bought one in the 40" flavor. Running the setup right now, channel scan.

Got an LG42SL80 2 days ago and had to return it... poor off angle viewing and audio lag issues. If not for those flaws I would have kept the LG, I would say the PQ was better than the W5100 and 240hz was a plus.

I look forward to putting the W5100 through the wringer and I hope it comes up all smiles and sunshine. I also have a 52W4100, also a 120hz set, so I expect similar or better performance out of my newest purchase.

I have an HD STB, a PS3 and a PC, all three connected via HDMI, and a PS2 via composite.

Is there any interesting content using the internet widgets? I suspect they will go largely unused, but I can always hope to be wrong on this. Wait... I need a wireless gamebridge for this, don't I. I cannot run a wired connection but I have a wireless router... what does the majority of you use for wireless access?

So far off-angle viewing is quite good, and I am anticipating pure joy while using my latest "toy".

Just picked up a 46W5100 and a PS3 through the deal at Bestbuy last night, after doing a LOT of research here. Thanks for all the info!

Hopefully I'll get it setup tonight. Forgot we needed a new entertainment center too...

I thought that was a good deal as well! If 46 wasn't too big for my space, I would have gotten that package as well. Besides the tv and ps3, I think you got a game and bd movie too, right?

I'm waiting for tv guide to update to see if the channel and programming info downloads correctly. For some reason my cable provider Comcast was not listed in my region, only AT&T Uverse and Direct TV. I hope it displays the same data my w4100 does.

Congrats on your purchase!

I just picked up a 46" W5100 from Best Buy on Monday night as well. Now I'm just trying to find someone to buy the PS3 from me locally. (I already have 2.)

I am seeing the same issue with the "clouding" in the corners, but it hasn't been anything to distract me.

This has been a huge upgrade from my 46" Samsung DLP that just died on Monday. (Hence the need for the new TV.)

The settings off of the CNET site are a huge improvement as well for our living room.

Those are my early thoughts.

Whoa, that is a good deal. I bought a 46" on 11/11. I'm going to stop by this evening to see if they will price match. If they do, should I keep my BD-S360, keep both, or sell the PS3...

same here. Got 52w5100 because of the great price. I have a 9/2009 build and I have several clouding mainly on the left 1/4 side of the panel as well as some minor flashlighting and one red bright stuck pixel also on the left side of the panel. It may sound terrible but actually most of time I don't even notice them unless with a all dark or dark gray background. I think this is a keeper due to the great picture and great price.

That's why I still buy at B&M stores... easy, easy echanges and price matching. If you got your 46W5100 at Best Buy, take back the S360 and exchange it for the PS3 and they will price match the current package price.

You might try posting your location on this forum, you may find a buyer here, especially if you discount your price a bit. Di you try posting it in the "For Sale" forum?

Went to Best Buy and got an amazing deal! They gave me a little trouble at first because they couldn't do a straight price match on the PS3 bundle vs what I bought. They ended up "returning" my TV, gave me store credit and then I used the gift card to buy the bundle. AND I still have $250 on the gift card! So I ended up with a 46W5100, PS3, Uncharted 2, and The Taking of Pelham 123 for $250 less than what I paid for just the TV!

Thanks to DexterMustard and chinee for getting me to look at this today.

I have a week to decide but I think I'm going to keep the S360. It's noticeably quieter than the PS3 and it would give me a second Blu-ray player if I want to use it on another TV.

Congrats! If I had $250 I'd probably get myself a Netbook. Or return the S360, add that refund to the gift card and get a nice 32" for another room.... or a decent AV receiver... or a HTIB... or an HD camcorder... I think I going to put these items on a list, and slip the list into my wife's purse, I might get a surprise for Xmas...

I actually have a friend looking at it for $200. If he doesn't come through on it, I probably will list it here. I'm sure someone would bite on it at that price.

Does anyone have any helpful links about the widgets? I think I already jacked up my weather ones and need information on how to reset or adjust. I started out with three windows when I got the TV, Sunnvale, NY and Paris. Now I am down to just one and it starts as "weather" then I have to choose one of the cities I have added to my list. I deleted the default ones, which somehow caused my extra windows to disappear.

I'm starting to think blu-ray is something that is going to be over before it ever really gets started. Sure the picture is great, but the future seems to be downloading movies in HD and the future is already here. If you get the blu-ray with the PS3 it makes sense, but I can't imagine actually buying a dedicated blu-ray at this point.

The BestBuy bundles with the PS3 really have been great. That is what got me too. BestBuy also refunded the difference in my purchase when they dropped the price another $100.00 a week after I purchased the TV. I had been watching and watching and finally purchased the bundle thinking I had it at a very good low price, but then a week later it dropped more. The new BestBuy in my area really is turning out to be a good store. Their website is also quite good. The price might be just slightly more than some website only stores, but I like walking in and seeing things for my bigger purchases. Now I don't miss CircuitCity as much as I thought I would. I really liked our old CircuitCity.

I agree that the future is d/l movies and for a large portion of the population that is "good enough" but every d/l I've seen doesn't come close to the quality of BD. Even HD via Cable/Satellite is heavily compressed and suffers. Until I'm able to d/l uncompressed 1080p fast enough (and without any caps) I'll still prefer BD.

Just picked up the KDL-46W5100 last night at Best Buy as part of their Sony PS3 bundle promotion.

I'm loving this set so far but am noticing considerable bleeding from the corners and clouding all over the screen. Is this pretty standard? Will it get better with time?

I realize what's "acceptable" is open to interpretation but is there any way this set is defective in some way? Like I said, the PQ is amazing, but this is pretty noticeable with the lights off and the screen black. Is there any chance this is just a bad unit?

I can try taking pictures later tonight if that would help.

Beginner question- is the diff between the W series and the V series worth $200 for a non gamer/non sports watching person?

I actually had the same dilemma about 2 months ago but decided to go with the 46w5100 due to the Bravia 3 vs 2 engine as well as the online connectivity. Admittedly I really haven't used the online stuff to much other than hooking it up and playing around with the widgets, but I would rather be prepared for the future should I decide to subscribe to Netflix or any other future online programming.
I do have a bit of flashlighting and some minor clouding along with a somewhat tolerable but shallow viewing angle, but the fantastic HD picture and acceptable SD quality of this set far outweighed those cons as far as I'm concerned. I have the 52xbr4 in the den and most of the flashlighting/clouding gradual faded over time
As far as audio is concerned I think as far as tv speakers are concerned it is much better than some of the other tv's I had looked at.
Prior to purchasing this I had looked at quite a few other set's along with reading the very limited reviews of the w5100. I rolled the dice, and I have to say I really think this TV is a bit of a diamond in the rough! I still can't quite figure out why so few reviews exist on this set vs. all the other sony/samsung/lg, etc... sets that are out there.

Question. I just saw a chart that showed the following:
W5100 3800:1 on-screen contrast ratio 100,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio
V5100 5000:1 on-screen contrast ratio 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio

If we are always turning off things like auto-dimming and features that cause the screen to darken in dark scenes because that is annoying, then shouldn't we be looking at the "on-screen contrast ratio" number? In which case, wouldn't the V have the better contrast?

I'm going to post this in the V thread as well. I'm sure I'll get a different answer over there.
