woho! Gotta love Sony's customer service.
Don't see any other manufacturers doing this type of support...

This is what I wanted from Sony a month ago when I started calling about my 46XBR4. They said it wasn't economical to repair my TV ( 2 weeks ago ) and they are sending me a Refurb 46XBR9 with 1 year warranty for $300 +tax. Supposed to ship tomorrow. I could cancel and get the XBR4 fixed but I am on my 2nd panel already. I'm glad they are doing right by the XBR4 owners like they did with the XBR1s.

Thank you for posting this! Although I've not had any issues with mine yet (purchased 11/2007), it is good to know I'm covered.

That is correct. It only applies to the 46" size of the XBR4 and XBR5. If the panel has been abused or tampered with the service will not be covered. These are beautiful televisions and it is good to see that you will enjoy them for a longer time!

Those who think they know everything annoy those of us who do.

To Display Vetran,
I have a sony xbr4 46 it takes 10-15 min for the entire screen to go normal on the right side it stays dark then starts to flicker then finally goes normal.
I replaced the fb 1 board and the ub1 board symptoms still persist so I changed back the origional parts. After about a month now the left side after warm up now flickersa constantly. Any suggestions?

The one got it fixed and replaced from Sony were very happy and lucky. But as for me, I had very bad experience. Sony won't fixed or replaced for me. Because I had back panel opened, That cause to voice my warrently. If anyone know a good lawyer and refer to me.
Thank you

Hello.
New member with sony KDL-46XBR4 LCD TV and without warning or symptoms the TV started having video display problems. When you turn on the TV we most often get no picture and half the time still giving audio.
The display has always been outstanding with no blurr or lines or color vibration.
If you cycle the ON and OFF it sometimes finds the video again and looks normal....but only seldom do we get the video back.
Changed inputs from HDMI to Component and Composite with the same problem - no video and sometimes audio with no video...But again sometimes you get both video and audio with less quality using these inputs.
When the unit is showing no video you cannot see display when trying to change inputs...just get a black screen. So hard to tell what input you are sourcing.
Sony tells me it's a panel and not worth fixing. This TV cost me $3000 new Oct 07. I really don't believe in tossing such a nice unit cause of this display issue. The same comparable model from sony now costs about $4200.

Now as I write this submission the TV display suddenly come on...this after about 15 minutes of being on with no video, but still had audio...so now I have both again. Until I turn it off and have to go through the same game of, "hide and seek"

Thank you most sincerely,

Dale

I have a KDL-46XBR2 that I have had no problems with. My mother bought a KDL-46XBR4 and the screen is acting up. On different inputs the center to the right is all blank. If it is on TV the center is dark but not 100% and the right side is moving really slow. The black box at the bottom that says "No Signal" is easily read.

I was wondering if this is a tab bond issue or t-con issue or even something else.

Thanks,
Todd

I, too, bought a Sony Bravia XBR in December of 2007 and just recently had the same darkening problem as described in other
posts.

I think the analysis of tarnishing on some contacts is absolutely correct. It was taking longer and longer to get the picture
back to normal (probably because of the deepening tarnish issue.)

The picture was coming back once the TV had been on for at least 30 minutes.... in other words: heating up.
When the contacts got warm, they expanded and made the connections better.

Today I tried a quicker fix: I took a hair dryer and held it at the back right of the screen (where the darkness occurred.)
In 2 minutes, I had a perfect picture again. The hair dryer apparently just sped up the process that the heat from the TV would do but over a much longer period of time.

I realise that this doesn't solve the tarnishing problem but it is a short-term fix for those with this problem.

Boky, I just found this form while surfing as a result of my Sony 46inch when black last night. It turns on but nothing on the screen. I have someone coming out mid month to check it out but in surfing the forum you appear to be very knowledgeable. I was wonder if clearing the contacts would also solve my black screen problem?

After reading most of the posts. I decided to take my tv apart. low and behold its a tab bond issue. I used a piece of rolled up paper and scotch tape to keep pressure on it until i go get rubber bumber stuff. its working right for the most part. i dont think i used enough paper. i uploaded a vidoe of what it does when you are pushing on the tab. just for informational purposes i guess.

Hello! I'm sorry for digging up this old thread, but I figured this is where I'm most likely to get the answers in looking for.

I was performing this tab fix for the second time to try and fix lines that developed in my screen a few months after the initial repair. After a few months a black line about 15 pixels wide appeared vertically down the right hand of the screen, and also a yellow line maybe 3 or 4 pixels wide down the left hand side. This morning I decided to take it apart and redo the repair, but now I have a dead black screen. The tv powers on for about 15-20 seconds and then turns itself back off., but the screen stays black while it's on.

I know what caused it to go black, but I'm not sure if it's fixable now. At the top of the panel by the tabs, there are four wide metal clips that hold the metal square frame in place. If caution is not used, the metal clip all the way to the right side will touch the contacts on the tab pcb strip. I forgot to use paper to prevent this from happening, so yea, it touched and now the screen is black.

My question is, can this be repaired by replacing the TCON board, or is the panel itself now fried? I removed the TCON and the connecting board and i seen no signs of burning, but that means nothing really. Should I drag it out to the curb now? Or is this fixable?
Thanks in advance for any replies.

In case anyone else has this problem, I have fixed it. Shorting the circuit board on the top of the panel consequently blows the fuse on the TCON. There are two things that can be done: 1. Replace the TCON board, or 2. Replace the fuse on your current TCON board.

The cost of a TCON is $50-$70 on eBay, which isn't terribly expensive, but I opted for option 2.

The fuse is labled F1 and is a 125v 5a SMD, the tiny surface-mount ceramic type fuse. They're about $5ea on Amazon but are available from other sites like DigiKey, Newark, etc. I simply soldered legs onto a 250v 5a glass fuse, wrapped it in electrical tape, and soldered it in place of the SMD.

My set is now working again, so now I'm going to continue to try and rid the screen of the yellow and black lines I initially set out to do!

Good luck!

I purchased my Sony KDL-46XBR4 in Dec 2007 and just recently it has started have problems when turning on the set. The right side of the panel is dark, and there are 3 visible vertical lines. The issue usually goes away with 15 minutes of use or when touching the upper right side of the bezel and pushing back.

I have read on other forums that the possible issue could be the inverter board. There is a left one and a right one for this particular model. My questions are:

1. Has anyone ever heard of this problem being caused by a bad inverter board?
2. If it is the inverter board, is the "right" inverter board the one to my right when facing the front of the tv or facing it from behind it?

Hope someone can help. I haven't bothered calling Sony yet as I know all they will do is point me to a service call that cost just $100 for someone to tell me what I may already know.

Thanks in advance.
I purchased a Sony Bravia TV KDL46XBR4 in 2008. I have had problems with red green and blue tint, double images, blurbed picture for three years.
According Consumer Reports News: March 01, 2010 Sony extends warranty on 46-inch XBR4 and XBR5 Bravia LCD TVs due to these problems and will replace the LCD. Although I registered with Sony, I purchased the TV though their Coquitlam BC store I was never advised of the recall.
There is no service in North America now, all calls are routed to South America or the Philippines. All Sony stores in Canada closed this year. After two calls both of which denied that there was an extension, I even gave them the URL of the warranty extension, they denied it existed.
I now have to get up and reboot the TV each day to get rid of the problem.
A loyal Sony customer I was. Not any more.
