It doesnt, but i see where your coming from. In the video where he explains edge lit local dimming (about 5 minutes in) it does seem like hes standing next to an LX900 and not the HX800. I have no idea why this is the case.
Skip to 5:15. He explains edge lit local dimming and pretty much answers exactly what i asked you about how can edge lit local dimming dim the center of the screen.
He says pretty clearly that it will only dim around the edges of the screen whereas the center will still remain very bright.
That's not exactly true. When the LED's dim on the edges, the center of the screen also dims as no light is being directed there. BTW, your movie link does not work.

this. Basically if its top/bottom edge lighting, each LED zone will light a vertical stripe going from the edge to the centre of the screen. If it dims, that entire vertical stripe will dim - thats simply the level of granularity that set has.
full local dimming is more like a checkerboard, and each square can be dimmed independently, so you get more dimming 'resolution' if you like.
throw in complications like what panel is used, what coating is over the panel, what electronics are driving it, and TBH you might just as well wait for reviews/impressions to get a feel for the differences. eg a crappy local dimming set might be worse than a great CCFL non-dimming one. The sets aren't quite out there yet for us to have a proper feel for the range
55xbr8 review David Katzmaier(Plasmafanboy) CNET page 2 Performance: ' 55xbr8 delivers picture quality that's nearly as good as the Pioneer PDP-111FD,the best flat-panel performer period. Our only gripe, and it's enough to cost the Sony the title, was its tendency to fade when seen from off angle.'

Im not so sure hes a fanboy of plasma as much as his tests are skewed that way with only dark no window test lab viewing.
I actually think he hasnt put much thought into how that viewing enviroment skews towards plasma per say.
If they are technicallyy even from a 0 view angle then you coulld just as easily say that the xbr8 is better if you have any light on as little as a lightbulb causes plasma especially Kuro to washout black level. Rather than view angle.
Each set has a serious flaw but for the average viewer I believe that any daylight or a lightbulb washout of the image is worse than off angle. Or perhaps at least a n even wash.
I truely believe this due to my own "wow i didnt think of that moments" I have had in my 39 years on planet earth.
I'm looking forward to the HX909 owners thread. I'm probably getting the 46HX803 as the 46HX903 (UK) is just a tad too wide for my TV unit. But if the HX909 consensus is massively positive I might hang on until next years models - I just need Sony to wake up to slim bezels.

Our BB had the mighty Kuro for 18 months displayed in bright light but never as bright as many living rooms and that panel never impressed anyone - never observed a crowd period around it's mighty taunted self as King and for awhile they had it next to a Samsung 750 running the Kuro Demo and in daylight the Samsung kicks it ass - the XBR8 would do the same in daylight.
Katzmeijer has always had a bias against LCD and never once have I seen him admit their deficiencies in bright lit rooms where we view HD Golf, NCAA/NFL Football where 90% is in daylight.
A supposed Holy Grail Panel should be able to gather a crowd around it and I never saw one develop at BB for the mighty fallen Kuro - whereas when the mighty Q006 70" was on display at Sonystyle it had crowds around it daily. I Trust that these new Sony panels would kick it's ass in a normal living room especially those of us with tall windows and southern exposures. I'm not saying it looked bad or anything but comparatively to the best LCD's it was downright dull and dimmer and certainly nothing to make it a crowned best panel for daytime viewing and BTW I think it gets dark around 10PM and so that's a helluva lot of daytime viewing unless one works afternoon shift and is a vampire up all night.
We just received the XBR52HX909s. Wow. Unlike the other sets, the LED backlights are full array and the sets are about 3" deep. But on the other side (front), WOW.

Price talk is not allowed on AVS. We can discuss MSRP but we're not supposed to discuss retailers and specific prices. fyi, I've been guilty of it too.

I was at Abt today to get a new Pioneer X920BT installed in my Touareg and spent some time comparing the HX800 and HX909.
It was a difficult comparison as the HX909 is in their Home Theater room and the HX800 is out on the sales floor with the other mid-sized TVs. Those who have been to Abt know what I'm talking about.
So, I wore a path walking between the two sets. Unfortunately, Abt was feeding ESPN HD to all the sets, which meant a complete inability to compare black levels.
That said, the one difference that stuck out was glare...or lack thereof. The HX800 had some obvious glare, but the HX909 had almost none. The only way I could see glare on the HX909 was at a nearly 90 degree viewing angle.
It was apparent to me that the HX909 is a no-brainer if you had a brightly lit room. I fall into that category, so the HX909 will be my TV of choice...once the price drops a bit from full retail.
I will be back at Abt tomorrow to pick up my truck. I will try to get some better material representative of black levels playing to provide more thoughts.
