System Software Update
Date: 10/03/2012
Version: 4.114

What Does This Do?

Sony has designed the BRAVIA® Televisions software update process to be customer friendly. This software update (version 4.114) provides the following benefits:

Improvements over version 4.112:

Improved stability for the initial/add scan for receiving digital channels.

Benefits provided by previous updates and included in version 4.114:

Improves performance and stability of IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) features.

Note: IPTV allows you to enjoy HD (High Definition) programming from the Internet on your BRAVIA television that is connected to a broadband Internet connection.

Installs an updated version of the on-screen i-Manual built into the BRAVIA television.

Allows for the power-on chime sound coming through the TV speakers (not through the Optical Out) to be turned off in the Sound Menu.

Resolves an issue where a black and white picture may occasionally appear when using Video/Component shared input.
Adds support for the Sony Entertainment Network Music and Video Unlimited services.

Improves performance and stability of IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) features.

Note: IPTV allows you to enjoy HD (High Definition) programming from the Internet on your BRAVIA television that is connected to a broadband Internet connection.

Resolves an issue where the TV's clock may reset and the electronic program guide information may not be synchronized with the actual time.

All I know is that since the last update, I've lost all internet capabilities, and get an error message every time I try to "refresh internet content." Maybe this update will resolve this error.

I know that hardly anybody gets on this forum anymore and anybody who does most likely already has their tv calibrated correctly but I figured since this is a calibration thread and there is only one calibration settings post that I would put mine on here for the chance it might help somebody. These were achieved by using test patterns on a Disney blu-ray and Sony blu-rays in a dark room.

Backlight: 3
Picture: 93
Brightness: 51
Color: 59
Hue: 0
Temperature: Warm 1 (Warm 2 made the colors a bit better but any scene with white made it look way too red)
Sharpness: Min
NR: Off
MPEG NR: Off
Motionflow: Standard
CineMotion: Auto 2

Black Corrector: Off
Contrast Enhancer: Off
Gamma: 0
Light Limiter: Off
Clear White: Off
Live Color: Off

White Balance was done by eye (yes, I know this is a bad idea but it's all I have), but it looks pretty good.

Thank you poster Dukerox458 for the settings. I'll try them out ! I think our 2010 CCFL sets have better picture quality than 2011 or 2012 LED tv's.

The calibrated settings for a Sony KDL-46HX700 model:

Recommend switching off things like Black Corrector and Contrast Enhancer. They are not what you want when going after optimal blacks as they constantly either crush blacks/colours or up/down the backlight depending on the amount of black in the scene.

There is some confusion about the dynamic contrast and the static contrast for a LCD display.

Static contrast ratio is the luminosity ratio of the brightest and darkest color the system is capable of producing simultaneously at any instant of time, while dynamic contrast ratio is the luminosity ratio of the brightest and darkest color the system is capable of producing over time (while the picture is moving). Moving from a system that displays a static motionless image to a system that displays a dynamic, changing picture slightly complicates the definition of the contrast ratio, because of the need to take into account the extra temporal dimension to the measuring process.

Source: Wikipedia

A Sony KDL-40HX703 with conventional CCFL backlight has a static contrast of 2936:1 and a black level: 0.07 cd/m².

A Sony KDL-40HX803:

Out-of-Box After calibration
Black level 0,09 cd/m2 0,06 cd/m2
Brightness 229 cd/m2 132 cd/m2
Contrast ratio 2545:1 2200:1

Contrast ratio +/- 50

Shadow detailing of the HX800 series is fair but not fantastic. Because of the better static contrast ratio of the HX700 series than the HX800 series Sony decided to phase-out the HX700 series to boost sales of the HX800 series eek.gif.

Sony has switched to LG IPS panels for their Bravia line-up in 2013 for most of their models. Unfortunately Sony hasn’t managed to crack the issue of extracting impressive black levels from a LG IPS panel and a W805 scored averagely here, yielding an ANSI contrast of almost exactly 800:1. A full screen black pattern produced a measurement of 0.158 cd/m2 which is distinctly average.

CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v62), quality = 80

Does anybody know how the HX703 recognizes a Sony Blu-ray player source for theatre and then switches automatically to Cinema mode? I now have to push the theatre button on my remote control for switching to cinema mode. I have a KDL-46HX700 with the latest firmware version PKG4.117EUL-0108.

I have asked the Sony Support Team in Europe if they can contact Sony Japan to fix this issue with a firmware update so that the HX703 and other models automatically switch to cinema mode when a Sony BD player is used as a source. The Sony Support Team told me that this is a compatibility issue because a Sony Blu-ray player sends a signal to the TV to switch to cinema mode but the HX703 does not detect the signal from the Blu-ray player.

I haven't posted to this thread since I bought my 55HX701 in the summer of 2010. I'm about to run a cat5e cable to it, hooking it up to the internet for the 1st time.

Questions:

1. Since the firmware/software has never been updated, should I expect any problems?

2. Are there any security issues with having this TV online? I'm not sure what to expect, i.e. can it be seen on my network, do I need to connect to it for setup, etc.

Is there a good article outlining the technical aspects of this and also the features that being connected offer (aside from Netflix, etc.)?

Thanks for any information.

No known issues for a 701 that's never been connected or acquired new firmware? Sill haven't gotten around to this. so here I am, asking again.

I somehow missed this when I responded in Dec., but I think it likely that you could easily accomplish this with a Logitech Harmony One remote (or perhaps other brand programmable remotes as well). At any rate, you may well have resolved it by now.
