Now that this baby is more widely available, its time to start the discussion. Mine is coming in later today, and I'll be posting some pictures in the next day or so. In the meantime, here's the official link:

Okay, here are some pics. Sorry about the quality, I'll have to mess around more with the camera settings. As far as the tv goes, very happy with the picture out of the box. Only problem so far is some intermittent audio sync issues, which is strange in that I am running cable audio through my Tivo to my reciever via optical cable. Anyways...

What color is the bottom of the bezel? I can tell from the pics if its the same old Gold from the E77's or not. Also, list all of your settings. It looks like there is room for improvement regarding shadow detail/gamma but I could be wrong.

The bezel is all black, no gold like the E77.
As for my settings, they are out of box pretty much. I don't have an HD calibration disc and haven't played with settings yet. I am open to suggestion as clearly there is plenty of room for improvement.

In what ways is the 88 panel an upgrade from the 77? Still has a matte screen right? Too bad they didn't make a 65''

The 88 is an Xgen panel with UV2A technology. It also has 240hz for motion handling. Other than that it isn't too much different than the 77.

Well after a few more days of ownership I have some more impressions. The lip sync issues and the random loss of hdmi signal with my Tivo seem to have gone away since Sharp had me do a factory reset. It has been perfect over the last two days since the reset which is great.
The only complaint I have now, I started noticing over the last two nights when watching movies at night in a dark room. In dark scenes, there are three very faint "white-ish" horizontal bands that seem to be spread evenly across the screen. Again, they are only noticable on black backgrounds, and they are faint. I'm gonna try and take a picture using macro mode and see if I can capture these. Haven't decided how big of an annoyance there are gonna be for me yet, since most movies don't have too many dark, black shots. I'll try and get some decent pics and report back.
Also, I'm using hometheatermag's E77 settings, if anyone has any calibrated (self or professional) settings, please post them!

EDIT: As promised...

Just picked one up last night! Love the TV so far. Haven't messed with the calibration yet. Did using the E77 settings create the white bands jchas41? Currently fiddling with the settings. I can also test and see if I see the same bands tonight with what I have.

I don't think any of those settings caused the bands, no. They are only a problem at nighttime when watching dark material, during the day or when there is light's on, they aren't noticeable. The picture I posted slightly exaggerates the issue, but it gives you an idea anyways.

I am very interested if anyone else is experiencing this, I have been talking with Sharp today and they have had me send them pictures. Waiting to see what the outcome is. Let me know what you find. Just put the tv on a blank input and turn the lights off.

Has anyone either had this set professionally calibrated or tweaked it and found a really nice sweet spot they would share the specs on?
(or email me directly?)

I am fresh to this forum but am eager to read people's responses, experiences & reviews about this set now that it is FINALLY beginning to get feedback.

I have been researching for over a year and finally decided on the LC-60E88UN.
IT'S BEING DELIVERED TODAY!!!

I'm curious about the white bands too. IIRC someone had the 77 model and it had that issue and Sharp ended up replacing it, but the bands might have been pretty prominent. From what I've read Sharp's customer service seems pretty good.

I was thinking of getting a Samsung but reading about these Sharp's and the fact that the 60" is a reasonable price has me going in a different direction. Especially now that I've seen a thread where some Samsung TV's you get to play the panel lottery. I've got a 22" Samsung LCD computer monitor and the panel is extremely blue, and extremely washed out. I had to create a color profile in windows to adjust the gamma and colors as the OSD controls were not enough. I don't want to play the panel lottery anymore!

Now that the 88 Sharp is out I'm thinking of getting it over the 77. Seems to have a few upgrades for this year. Does anyone have experience with both of them? Does the 88 seem brighter and have darker darks like Sharp says? What about the fast input switching?

Waiting to hear more info from you guys.

Other than the issues I'm having with the white bands (hoping it is not a widespread issue), I have been extremely happy with the tv. For the price, I don't think I could have done much better. Mine is in a living room with 5 windows, so plasma was not an option.
HD sources, blu-ray especially, look amazing!

I haven't had any issues so far but haven't calibrated it much (won't have time to sit down and test until this weekend). TV looks great! Haven't noticed the white band issue jchas41 has seen but I also haven't tested this TV in complete darkness yet (been out the last few nights).

I'll do a quick test in the dark tonight before bed and let you guys know if I see the same white band issue.

I am getting mine delivered on Thurs from Dell using that coupon that expires tomorrow for the $700 off --- $1699. Once I get it hooked up I will share thoughts. Jchas what types of HDMI cables are you using and any settings you would recommend?

Glad to hear such positive thoughts so far as after all the research I dont know how I could pass up this TV for that price....

Using monoprice HDMI cables, haven't calibrated the set yet as I don't have a HD calibration disc. I tried using some of the E77 settings from the hometheatermag.com review but, wasn't thrilled with them. Hopefully, someone can calibrate their set and post back the results.

Want to see more pics! Also could anyone test the set for input lag? I'm sure the lag is pretty low, I just want to put a figure on it.

Well just wanted to share that Sharp customer service has decided that my panel is defective and they are swapping out my unit for a new one. I have to say that their customer service has been awesome! The whole issue was resolved in less than 24 hours, I simply sent them some pictures and they agreed that it wasn't acceptable.

Hopefully, no one else has the same type of issue and I'm crossing my fingers that the next set will have better uniformity.

Mine was delivered yesterday. I plugged in my PS3, popped in a BluRay and it looked great right out of the box... I then spent 2 hours sitting in a dark room in front of it and manually calibrated every possible thing that tv offers to the best of my abilities. (gamma, tint, hue, color temp, hi's & lo's, brightness, contrast ratios, etc) I went back to each area and readjusted a number of times as well while I swapped out movies scenes.

i went through a couple dozen BluRay scenes with TRUE colors (not at all filtered for dramatic effect) paused good pics with the colors I was tweaking and adjusted the correlating calibration settings I was working in at the time. (BluRays used: Dark Knight, Transformers, Wolverine, Body of Lies, Iron man and American Psycho)

Everything from faces, skies, flowers, deserts, cityscapes, water, prairies, mountains, fireballs, whites, blood, etc. It was a long process but the end result was WELL worth it and looks friggin' sweet... Until I have it professionally calibrated after a few hundred hours of usage, this configuration looks phenomenal... (in my humble opinion)

If anyone is interested in trying my calibration settings, lemme know and I can either document them and send them to you directly or snap a picture and create a jpeg of each calibration section...

Don't be afraid to get in there and get your hands dirty by doing a lot of this manually just to try and play with it. Time, patience, intense attention to detail and general anal retentiveness pays off. If anything ends up looking off, just reset to factory settings. No harm, no foul. I am very pleased with the tweakings and this tv in general!

Enjoy the tv, everyone!!!

Rob

Good to hear that you are happy with your set. Sounds like you don't have any of the "white bands" either which is great! Feel free to post your settings, I have already gotten a lot of inquiries from fellow users asking for them.

Westa6969 posted the link for the 2010 brochure in another thread.

http://www.sharpusa.com/ForHome.aspx

I noticed that the 88UN was only 100,000:1 versus the LED's which were in the millions. Now I know that's dynamic and not static, but still a huge difference.

Can anyone comment on the black level on this model?

Where did you get your TV from? Because I saw the E88 at hhgregg and it was not all black it had the same gold/bronze like E77 bezel.

I've had my 88UN for 2 weeks now and I haven't noticed any white horizontal bands during dark scenes.

I also think the TV looks near perfect right out of the box. I would be interested in seeing MellowMeatHead's settings though...please post them or ill send you a PM and you can email them to me if you don't mind = )

Also, the bezel on the 88UN is all black, with SILVER/GRAY highlights at the bottom of the bezel only. No gold, but silver.

As for input lag, after turning off film mode and one other setting, dynamic contrast or something, I notice 0 input lag. Able to keep up my 1.30 K/D ratio on CODMW2, no prob,

Where did you get your 88UN from Jchas41?
