No one really knows, maybe Sony did not want to give Amazon models this year or maybe Amazon did not really want any Sony TV's. It is what it is.

Is anybody taking an advantage of this week's Best Buy offer - HX800, glasses, emitter and blu ray system and 3 years 0% financing? With all the freebies the deal is actually tempting to the point that I want to go and buy it. It's too bad there are no movies to watch in 3D yet (on blu ray)
I also wonder if Best Buy would allow to substitute that blu-ray system for an actual reciever...

Cloudy with a chance of meatballs is available on 3D Blu Ray.
Also Sony is giving away Cloudy and IMAX Deep Sea 3D when you purchase and register the TV and you also get a code for 4 free PS3 3D games. (Wipeout, Super Stardust, Pain and a demo of Motostorm).

Ya, but those aren't movies - cartoons and games.

Cloudy is animation plus I am sure companies don't want to just convert random movies to 3D due to quality. (Clash of the titans for example). But look at the 3D movies coming to theaters for example: Toy Story 3, Despicable me, Shrek, How to train a dragon etc.

I am looking forward to Tron and Resident Evil (filmed with Avatars fusion camera system).

Hello. I have a question about PIP (picture in a picture) for KDL-40HX800. According the online spec sheet, etc. PIP is available with this model. I have had no luck using it. I have set up my PC (actually MAC) to input through the HDMI (4) as indicated in the Sony 'Setup Guide'. At this point PIP is supposed to be available through the OPTIONS key on the Remote (which it isn't). The online chat person indicated that PIP is not available for this model and sony.com and all the printed documentation is incorrect.

Have I just setup things incorrectly or is the Sony online chat person correct?

Many thanks.

This is a continuation of the exploration of PIP on the 40HX800.

from i-Manual ... ""PIP" displays a picture from the connected PC in the full screen, and a TV program or composite video in an inset window. The feature is available when a PC is connected with an HDMI cable."

My experience is that this works when connected as DVI, but UNavailable when connected as HDMI.

Again, I would appreciate if anyone has experience with this, as my preferred connection from my PC (mac) is through HDMI.

Thank-you,
whobyfire

Is price talk allowed here? 'Cuz if so...B&H just dropped the prices of the HX800 series QUITE a bit. Must be for the folks who don't want the whole extra package stuff.

If I wasn't into home theater, I'd have a whole lotta money.

I just picked up my 55HX800 from Best Buy today.

I've only tested it a little bit but I think it's an AWESOME set.

No flashlighting or clouding that I can see.

I tested a few things with it, such as the Avatar Bluray, which looked AWESOME. I'm glad I took the week off, now I can play all week.

To me, the blacks look great. I came from 3 problem riddled Samsung 58PNC7000's and I feel the picture so far is better. I never thought I would say that as I have been a plasma-only person before this. To me, the blacks are inky in comparison to the Samsung plasma.. which was a much lighter shade.

I tested the demo's of stardust and Motorstorm in 3d and they look really really nice. I did register just now and am downloading the 4 full games.

One question - I did the www.sony.com/3dregistration to register for the 2 3d Blu-rays.. There was no indication after I registered that they are sending this to me. Am I supposed to get some notification?

:)

Sorry, no. AVS has a very strict "no price talk" rule. We can't even mention the sub-MSRP prices at which we bought our equipment, much less link to deals. All that sort of information is reserved for paying members of the AVS Club, which has special forums for price talk.

Ah. Well, I suppose I was vague enough to let my post slide. Yay!

I saw the 46" HX800 yesterday in action at the Best Buy in Queens. The 55" was off for some reason but even off, it looks quite nice.

But the 46" had beautiful, vibrant colors. Very clear. I didn't get to see many solid black scenes but whenever there was a darker scene, it played it quite well. I was rather impressed. I had only seen video games on that model but this one was showing off a new 3D demo reel with a bunch of movies like Open Season and such. Standing in front of the TV and not eye level with it definitely throws off the 3D effect but when straight on with it, it was quite dramatic. My buddy was with me and doesn't really care about TVs much at all but couldn't stop saying, "Wow!" to it.

I was hoping they'd have the HX909 there but nope. Ah well. At the price the HX800 is, if more and more people buy it and don't have the problems sigprime did, I may just get this one if the 909 doesn't drop in price enough.

If I wasn't into home theater, I'd have a whole lotta money.

Hey guys I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on one of these sets but I just have a question that maybe someone in here could answer. How does the picture quality on this set compare to that of the old XBR's? I'm coming from an XBR 4 and am interested in upgrading for the 240 and 3D but I was wondering if I'd be losing anything in overall picture quality....

Prob too early too tell since the HX800 has not been out very long but in my opinion it beats the XBR4 in 2D quality.

Well I decided to make the jump and picked up the 46 late tonight before Best Buy closed. I haven't had a chance to play with it much but I'll try to have some impressions and pics by tomorrow night.

The HX800 gets reviewed here http://translate.google.com/translat...Den%26prmd%3Dv

Well overall has excellent 2d performance no blooming.
A quote from the review from google translation .

Sony has succeeded thus to control the backlight with a golden mean, which is one of the great strengths of television, certainly not just in theory. In fact the picture of very good performance of the dark scenes

Is it known yet what type of panel is used in the HX800s? Are they s-pva in both the 46" and 55" models? If this was mentioned before I can't seem to find it.

I just registered my TV on Sony's website but I don't see any codes to pickup the 4 games or the Blu-Ray's. Is there anything else I need to do?

Since you registered your TV on Sony's website you will be getting the free DVD's' they do not acknowledge.

In you package with the manual there should be a sheet giving you a code to download the free games.

Ok I found it...thanks man. How long does it usually take them to send out the movies? I need to go pickup a 3D Blu-Ray player later on this week I guess. I don't think I can wait for the PS3 movie update.

I registered about two weeks ago and haven't seen anything as of yet.

you may want to consider 3D version of cloudy with a chance of meatballs at best buy or amazon.com

I bought it and I think it's pretty good.

NJChris, can you comment more on that clouding you've found? I've had this TV in my shopping cart this whole week, but just can't click that Buy button due to all these so-so reports.
How bad is the clouding in 3D? Is it noticeable with or without glasses or both? Noticeable on black screen or when you're watching something? As far as I understand - local dimming is disabled in 3D - do you notice clouding only in 3D? Or in 2D as well? Thanks in advance for answering my million questions :-)

Really? That's ashame. Is there no workaround for this?

How bad is it in a completely dark room with 3D? Is it too bright? So when you switch to 3D mode, it just jumps to full brightness from whatever the user set brightness is?

Maybe this could be fixed in a firmware update.

I would assume that since when you put 3D glasses on the screen becomes darker that the TV would have to crank the backlight to compensate.

I've had one for a while now. Great tv. Some folks must be really really picky. Far better picture than the EX700. And the only one I've seen that matches or exceeds the picture quality of my previous XBR. Spectacular tv.

How does the overall picture quality of PS3's Blu-Ray player compare to the new standalone players, like for example the BDP-S570? I would assume that some of you guys have both PS3 and a standalone...

I haven't returned it yet. And now I can't get the clouding to show up the same way. It's fainter now and not noticeable in 2d. And I can lower the brightness to minimize it.

I tried to recreate it for a friend that came by and I couldn't. It was so faint that he didn't notice it and I don't know if I did.

When I have the backlight down (for 2d) and brightness to a good level, the blacks are very dark, but some blacks do get crushed (if someone is wearing a black outfit, it sometimes makes them look like they are head with a black void as clothes.

Anyone know how the clouding can go away like that?

And for the record, I'm very picky about the tv picture.

:)
