Couple of quick questions...

First, which are the most recent/popular settings? For the most part I need to adjust settings for Xbox Gaming, General Cable Night, General Cable Day, and maybe a Sports setting (no Blu-Ray yet...must convince wife).

Second, after reading through here and other posts, I am a little worried panel wise. I tried looking at the pixels and they kind of look like tiny rectangles but I was using a crappy magnifying glass. What are the differences/drawbacks in the panels and should I really be concerned one way or another? Is there another way to tell on this model other than the magnifying glass thingy? I could go out and purchase a better one but I have no other use for it than this so I hate to waste the money.

Thanks again for eveyone's help/input on this thread and the forum in general.

As far as the most popular settings, you will have to look at Phase700B's many posts. Check the links he has in his signature. We all love his numbers.

My advice regarding the panel: Don't worry too much about it. It's always good to know what's inside the TV, but I say if you're happy with the way it looks, it's not a big deal. There's always something better out there, that's just the way it is with technology. Having said that, I certainly don't approve of panel lottery, if that's what's going on here.

Try Phase's settings for all your inputs and I'm sure you will love your new TV. Keep us posted!

How is the image quality of the LD650 ? There are combination of feedback ranged from below average to good. I had my mind set on the Sharp 810 (I have done extensive research and concluded that only 3 brands offers great input lag, Samsung is a huge disappointment for gaming) but the potential design flaw (L shaped mark on screen) discouraged me from investing in this TV. I have checked out LD650 in person and I don't think i should make critical judgment based on the store setting. Any feedback is appreciated from current owner. The stores in my city do not carry LD550.

There were several owners who have asked a question or two about settings on a xxLD650 in the thread. Unfortunately many people ask a question, get what they need, and never give any feedback. The next time we hear from them, they just have another question and never let us know if/how things went the first time.

That being said, the LD650 line had the best LCD panel in the LD line , with low input lag, and great picture quality.

I can also tell you this. Look at many of the other mid and even high end TV threads here on AVS. There are all kinds of problems. When I was looking to buy, this line stood out amongst all others. The LG xxLD line has no chronic problems like many other brands. The main issue, if it is an issue, is that some models have less off angle viewing ability than others. I have 4 LCD TVs, bought and set up (several brands) many others for friends and family, and for the money the LD line is tops. I think the LD650 would be a great buy! Two weeks after I bought my 42LD550, I saw Costco had the 47LD650 for a few $$$ more than my 550. They sold out in a few days.
But I only have room for a 42".

Well, I'm back, not to prove you wrong, but I did say I would be back to comment after my TV came.

I bought the 47LD650 after a member here recommended it. The TV is great and the picture is outstanding. I primarily bought it for gaming. I think the TV is somewhat too big for gaming, but that is my only complaint. The lag is not noticeable, if it is present at all - I'm a young (22 year old) gamer and I'm very easily bothered by lag. I play FPS games where having low lag is very important, and I will say that the LD650 is great as far as that goes, whereas I have stopped using other TV's for gaming because of lag. I haven't used Phase700's picture settings (or anyone else's settings) whatsoever, but one of my favorite things about the TV is that changing picture and audio modes is extremely easy. I can switch between Standard, Sport, Game, and Cinema modes very easily. It was also easy to figure out how to set "custom modes".

Cons:

My speaker (or something else) seems to have something wrong with it. When I turn on the TV, for a while (a matter of minutes) the TV emits a low but audible whining noise. If I plug in an audio cable (to the 'headphone' jack on the side of the tv) the whining stops. However, the speaker doesn't work with the audio cable, despite the fact that it worked with the same cable a week ago. (The cable still works; I tried it with my IHome). The reason I think the problem is with the speaker is because of the audio cable issue; I'm assuming that the speaker also causes the whining noise (although other computer parts can emit the same noise).

Overall, a great TV although I may end up returning it and probably will get a replacement unit.

Thanks again for eveyone's help/input on this thread and the forum in general.

For most settings, use the ones provided in the link in my "signature " in the link below. For a bettter Daytime setting for OTA/Cable use this new one and see what you think:

By the way, even with the $100 shipping and handling (costco.com) I still felt like I got a great deal ($950 total, after tax and everything). I'll let everyone know how smoothly getting a replacement unit goes though.

Thanks for the feedback!

Hope all goes well with the return. Can't see the actual speaker causing a whine. Wondering if the 47LD650 has a small fan inside the cabinet? My 4 year old Mitsubishi 46" has a place for an internal fan, that Mits eventually decided to leave out (for noise issues? )

Just a thought!

Does anybody have info on the input lag of the 55LD520? I tried to search it but the results keep coming up flat. Does anyone own/recommend this TV? I am trying to buy one soon. My primary concern is gaming and would like an LCD/LED. I have around $1400 to spend. Thanks

I have the 42ld520 and use it for an additional display for my computer for gaming and movies. actually have not turned on my computer LCD at all in the past month. I do play allot of games and the only lag i notice is because of my crappy wireless mouse. This is a Fantastic display!

Sorry for the potentially rookie question, but honestly I tried to search, and this thread isn't easy to search through!

Does the Official LG 42LD550 support audio passed in through the HDMI cable? I just bought a Nettop ION2 and supposedly can pass audio out via the HDMI out.

I don't have the 42LD550 in hand yet as it was shipped from an online store. The TV seems great for a bedroom TV, from when I saw it at Best Buy this afternoon. Though I didn't check this functionality.

Yes, it certainly does. It would be awful if it didn't for those of us who don't use a receiver.

I have 3 options at this point A. LG 52LD550($1300) , B.LG 47LD650 ($1200) , C.LG 55LD520($1400). My primary goal is gaming. I am leaning toward the 52ld550 at this point but can't find many reviews on it. Any input would help, thanks guys

got burned with plasma flickering with a new Samsung 58" Plasma (C680).
i want now switching to LCD. but dont want to lose the smooth and crisp PQ.
Would you guys recommend the LG 55LD520 for
70% cable HD (mostly Sports and shows...only HD).
10% blu ray
20% ps3 gaming

thanks

The 55LD520 would be great for your application, but you might also consider the 52LD550 even if you don't need/want the internet apps. You get 1 more HDMI port (4) and a few other things. On the other hand, the 55" is larger and may be a better LCD panel.

I think you would be very happy with the 52LD520. It is a deal for the price and not the chronic problems of most of the "big name" TVs.

Out of the three you are considering, I would go with the 47LD650. It has the top of the line LCD panel (2ms) found on higher end TV's , 240HZ which is good no matter whether you use TruMotion or not, and would have the best off axis viewing according to what we have learned.

If picture quality isn't your biggest concern, the 55LD520 still has great quality and look at that SIZE.... .

Thanks for the input! What do you think of the middle one 52ld550? Since I can't decide on the 520 or the 650, I feel like the 550 would be a nice settle. I really had my hopes set on at least a 50'...

Also.... Does anyone know if I can use my dvi-HDMI from my computer on one of the HDMI inputs and also connect my PC audio to the PC audio input on the TV? Thanks...

I would recommend the 55LD520 or the 47LD650, largely because the 52" may NOT be an LG panel. The 47" and 55" panels reportedly have the best response time and minimum artifacts.

For those of you concerned about the different panels: LG makes 32-, 37-, 42-, 47- and 55-inch panels. According to their website (lgdisplay.com), all their current panels are IPS. If you buy an LG TV in a size other than the ones mentioned above, it most likely won't be an LG panel, but it could still be an IPS made by someone else. In the case of my 60LD550, it's a VA panel.

just wanted to verify that the 42LD520 is a matte screen or not?

I'm pretty sure it's not glossy, but I can't recall if it's a traditional matte screen or somewhere in between.

I have that exact tv (love it) and its matte(ish). not totally matte but really does not reflect much at all. I was paranoid about it being glossy because I hate (with a passion) glossy screens but there is no way i could see a reflection in it when it is on.

its very close to matte but not quite all the way there.

As far as I know, they're all the same matte screen with very little reflection. The frame is glossy, though.

I'm sorry I am a little confused, what do you mean the 52LD550 may not be an LG panel? Like LG just puts their stamp on it and its made by someone else? Thanks

Exactly that. It's what a lot of TV manufacturers do, including the ones that are also panel makers, like LG. It's unfortunate when this happens within the same model line, like the 520s or the 550s.

Hey the price on the LG 55LD520 just dropped to $1300. I am now stuck between the LG 55LD520($1300) and the 47ld650($1180). Unfortunately the 55ld650 is a little out of my price range @$1600.

You have to think about what you would prefer, size or features. The 520 doesn't have Netcast, but still has 120Hz, which is good. The 650 has Netcast and 240Hz as well as a higher contrast ratio. If you ask me, you won't be able to tell the difference between 120Hz and 240Hz.

I just got a 42ld520 for our bedroom when we move and need a question answered. Right now I have my ps3 hooked up to our Sony 46xbr9 and I love the Bravia-sync feature. Will LG's Simplink work in the same way with a ps3. I hooked up a Sony BDP-360 to the 42ld520 but couldnt get the simplink to work with it, it doesnt recognize the blu-ray player.
