According to the Samsung representative Micro Dimming is : Edge LED + a software controller that analyzes the picture in 4000 different zones and adjusts accordingly. It’s not a local dimming hardware function but instead a software picture circuit analyzing with the pixel areas. See the Q&A in Samsung line-up catwalk show.

This is 'kind of' explanation since it does not tell if and how the light level is adjusted from the edge leds. The number of zones stated is phenomenal but it is a software based system so everything still not very clear.

One may add to this answer to another question:
What is "local contrast enhancer"?
LCE has the same function as Micro Dimming. For more information see the previous answers.

Which suggest Micro Dimming is just a kind of more sophisticated LCE???
