I am defintely buying the KDL-60NX720 this weekend and I had the following question: Does it make sense to buy the Extended Coverage? If yes, would you buy it directly from Sony or a private party like Square Trade?

Thanks,
D

Is flashlighting when it looks like someone is shining a light behind the glass? I noticed when I went to the web browser that the tv does not go to the dark ink color but is black with a lot of what I think is flashlighting. Espeicially in the lower left hand corner. Looks strange but nothing I notice when watching tv and I'm not going to sit around and watch a blank screen so I don't think its a problem.

How do you think that is going to look when watching a widescreen movie with a 2:35 aspect ratio? It's going to be very noticeable in a situation like that, and it's going to be noticeable during any scene that gets dark.

Actually in those situations, it is ink black and I've never seen it before in any situation watching TV. Always ink black. Just when I was playing around going to the web browser, it appears that it may not being doing the same black display if that makes sense while the browser is waiting to load.

I've been going through this since I got my NX720. Even replaced my Linksys router, which was due for an upgrade to Gigabit/Wireless n anyway.

While setting up the Wireless security, just on a whim I enabled the ssid broadcast and lo and behold, the TV connected right away and it even showed up in my system tray wanting to share media files. Dog slow at 54Mbps though. When I disabled the broadcast, couldn't connect again.

Think it's about time to run some Cat7 to the family room.

^ Yep, you're totally right. I learned this with my Google internet TV by SONY. SSID Broadcast needs to be enabled each time your device resets. You can disable it once your tv is on but as soon as you turn it off and back on it won't be able to find it. I had to "get over" broadcasting my SSID myself. I ended up using encryption plus MAC filtering to lock down my network.

Hey owners.. I just ordered the 55NX720 myself and I have a question since I'm so excited.

Anyone have pictures of the set itself? I hate simulated images. I am ordering online...
The frame of the display intrigues me the most.

Thanks in advance.

apologies for the flash, but it does give the gecko a cool effect

Signal was 1080i HD cable and the aspect ratio did not fill the screen

I have been playing my movies from a hard drive connected to the PS3 in the past. I just connected it directly to the USB on the TV and it will play some of the movies that the PS3 will play but not all. More important to me is whether the Sony TV has the same limitation that the PS3 has in that it won't read a file over 4GB. Also for the videos it won't play, what is the best format to convert them too?

Still no review of the NX720 available? None of the HX929 either by the way.

I wonder why it takes so long to review TVs these days?

A review will be out by Chad B shortly on the HX929.

I'm looking at picking up an HX720 tomorrow.

Can anyone tell me if they've noticed hazy vertical banding from the anti reflective coating on the screen?

I picked up an HX810 tonight at Costco, and I love almost everything about the TV but this vertical banding I'm seeing. I believe it's the anti reflective coating that's causing it, because when I pan left to right in a game it's as if you're looking through a hazy filter in front of the LCD panel.

I'm also hoping someone can confirm for me that the 3D emitter is built into this TV? It's not built in on the HX810 I bought tonight, as that was a 2010 model. Also, are the Sony 3D glasses for 2011 available right now? Is the 3D better on this TV than it was on their 2010 models?

My 55HX929 has the same issue; if SSID is not broadcast, then can't connect to the network. If I enable SSID broadcast, no problem. Sony support is oblivious to this (at least online chat), they insist resetting the router and tv will make it work.

let's see if we can get a solution here:
https://forum.sel.sony.com/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=9321. maybe if others confirm same problem, we can get a fix from Sony.

My KDL60NX720 was delivered Friday and spent the weekend setting up and playing. I tried all settings in Overboosted post, settled with Belpat's setting. Soon I will use DV Essentials to tune it up from here.

My first impressions; the picture is stunning. Had a chance to side by side my old Sony 52XBR2, and it looked dull and soft. Very pleased with the blacks, even in total darkness. No flashlighting or clouding visible so far. Haven't tried 3D yet but it is a matter of time. Internet streaming is surprisingly good, watched Lost pilot over Netflix in HD and my wife thought is was the satellite feed. It was that good.

I did buy it sight unseen, not in stores anywhere, was targeting the 60" Samsung but reading all the posts in this forum I did want to wait for the disappointment. I am not going to look back, very happy with my new toy

If I have the dynamic LED setting set to off I get major flashlighting. If I have if set to standard, it is almost undetectable.

How well does the dynamic edge LED work? I just recall what it looks like on computer monitors with dynamic contrast, where the backlight is dynamically adjusted. There I find it extremely annoying, where the screen brightness is changed very noticably depending on what image is shown. Is it equally annoying on the NX720, or is it more subtle so that you don't notice the screen brightness changing?

After a few weeks of watching I can honestly say that I haven't noticed anything like you are describing. So either it doesn't exist on my set or I am an imperceptive moron...

On my older Bravia i would see the screen dim when the pic dimmed but usually only when the pic was a dark background with nothing on it so it wasnt an issue

I havent seen this effect yet on my 46NX720 - one problem I do have is barney miller/amazon episodes jump around, nothing else does including other old shows like that from amazon, and the same doesnt jump on my KURO so it is the Sony

it is jumpy, the sound is ok but the entire pic is jittery, cant explain it any other way, it is as if the signal is goofed up but i play the same one on my KURO and no issue, so i bought a 2nd barney miller and same thing

Sounds good! What have you set the dynamic backlight setting to (High/Normal/Low/Off)?

In an earlier post in this thread some settings were posted. I got the impression that the one below controls how aggressively the dynamic LED backlight shall adapt to the image being shown:

"Led Dynamic-----Standard"

You are right Eric, there is no HIGH. I believe it was a mistake in one of my earlier post. Standard id the highest value.
