Ive had my nx720 now for a little over two years and love it. Ive been very happy with the picture quality. Before I got the Sony, I probably had 10 TVs in a span of 10 years. I just couldnt find one with picture quality that satisfied me. That changed when I got the nx720. Im still amazed at the black levels it produces for an edge lit set.

The only problems with this set seem to be software related. On the plus side, its nice its still getting firmware updates. On the minus side the thing still randomly reboots.

Hey guys,

I have been reading this forum for a long time. Got one issue with my own tv, so thought of asking experts here.

I have a sony NX720. There was an issue previously with the tv and it got dead with red blinking lights. I got it fixed from a mechanic who change the led driver board. But since then i saw half of the screen darker than other half. It was not not too much previously but now it has become more darker so i am not sure what may be the cause. It may be due to that led driver board replacement? should i again contact that mechanic if thats the case? I already spent 250 bucks on it and dont want to keep spending more of it if this is a different issue.

mine still shuts off by itself once in a while and i have the presence thing off

the energy saver button on the side of the tv is very confusing, first i dont know if pushing the top of it is on or off, literally dont know which way to push button to turn it on or off

then i dont know what it is doing, what I want is for the tv to NEVER shut off unless I shut it off

I've had one of these units (55") for several years now and thus far no issues. I have a somewhat large traditional RS antenna in a one-story attic, with both VHF/UHF elements, making an approximate 50' run of coax to this TV for backup access to OTA channels (use Verizon FiOS/TiVO DVR for primary viewing). Several weeks back I placed a dedicated Winegard FreeVision FVHD30H antenna behind (to the north) of the south facing RS antenna to use as a dedicated antenna to an inherited Toshiba HDTV in my master bedroom with surprisingly excellent results. I am picking up HOT TV and Retro TV with the much smaller antenna but am not finding it when scanning with the larger antenna running to the Sony set. The question is where is the issue? Sony TV ATSC tuner? Shorter run of coax though from a smaller antenna going to the Toshiba set allowing these channels to be found? Any suggestions? Towers are approximately 30-35 mi. to the south but that should be irrelevant here since the much smaller antenna is pulling in the two channels.

As simple as this may seem , have you tried unplugging the set for a few minutes and the restarting it? There also may be some way to do a factory reset. I see if I can find how and post if I find it.

BTW is this from any input or one with something connected?

Sounds like an issue with one of the video processing boards. Sony service center can probably fix it.

I was watching TV last night and my KDL46NX720 randomly shut off. When it shut off, I heard the "click" normally heard 3-4 seconds after hitting the power button. Immediately after hearing the click, the red standby light began to blink twice and has been doing so since last night. I've tried to hard reset the TV by unplugging it from the power source and waiting a minute along with plugging it into different outlets. The TV was plugged into a surge protector and everything else connected to that surge protector still functions. Has anybody had an experience similar to this?

Information for the record for others to use if needed.

My KDL-55NX720 started acting up a few days ago. No LED trouble codes were seen. TV came on, but there was video only on the bottom 5% of the screen. The rest of the screen was a faint gray. Menus could not be seen either. Audio was fine. Remote control worked as far as power off and on were concerned.

I did the power off routine, the TV reset routine and the unplug overnight routine. It sort of worked in that I got back a full screen picture, but there were extreme brightness flashes and poor images. Sometimes the images were frozen. Obviously things were not close to being right.

The cure was to use the power button on the TV rather than on the remote control. With the use of the on TV power switch there is a green LED setting for on, a red LED setting for off, and a no LED setting for off. The no LED off position must be used, and that setting is not available from the remote control power button. Then I set the TV master power switch to the off position, and left the TV unplugged overnight. I also unplugged all HDMI cables and all other cables.

The TV was back to normal in the morning. I checked for a software update, and there was one available. I did the software update.

Note that I am not sure if the TV reset routine had to be done. The TV reset routine did not help with the problem. Not a big deal one way or the other, just a pain to scan the TV channels, setup the wireless router and update Rovi again.

I had a similar issue 2 nights ago. Most advice seem to say the TV is dead. How did you fix yours? Thx

I never did.....it's boxed up in a store room, waiting for me to fix it. I went out and bought a Vizio M-Series and a 5 year warranty.

I did a bunch of research and it seems like 2 red flashes signal the problem is a bad power board. I found a service manual online and figured out the part # is 1-474-301-11 and is called the "G5 Board" (40" G4, 46" G5, 55" G6). I was only able to find "refurbished" versions online from third party sellers for around $130. If you end up fixing yours, let me know.

I'm having this issue with my sony KDL-55NX720 TV.

The TV turns on but turns itself off after like 5 seconds.
Then the LED power light blinks 4 times.

Right before turns itself off, i can see that there is a small section at the bottom dims.

Maybe couple of the LED is out.

Has anyone experienced similar issues?

Has anyone gotten repaired and how much was it?

I would appreciate if someone can share their experience.

Thanks,

I have the same model TV, but I have no trouble codes. My LCD panel is going bad (intermittent connection, but my back light assembly and all boards are good. I am kind of ticked off at a bad LCD screen after only 2 1/2 years of use.

The back light assembly is part of the main chassis and is not repairable. A bad LCD panel can be separated from the back light assembly / chassis, but a lot of time and two people are required to do that. Then again, there are no LCD panels or back light assemblies are available for sale so that about ends the repair discussion.

I am going to watch out for a bad KDL-55NX720 on E-bay if a local one is available that has the correct defect. Then maybe I can make 1 set out of 2.

Anyhow, here is some information from one of the Sony manuals.

LED repair

I found someone who was able to replace just the LED strip from another forum thread.
I can't post the url link duo to my account limit but you can search below title.

Sony KDL-60NX720 Failed after 1 1/2 years! 4 LED Blinks

It isn't the exact same model but close enough.

Seems like the panel is made by samsung and LED light strips are around $10 each from China.

I'm gonna try to disassemble my TV over the the holiday when i have time.

This is the second Sony TV I had that failed on me.
Both occasions, Sony just offered discount on new models.

Since day one, My TV has this weird random restart and when I contacted Sony, they just said software update will fix the issue, which it didn't.

My TV must had less than 100 hours.

I can't believe there are so many people who are having similar issues and sony isn't doing anything about it.

This will be the last sony product i'll own and will not buy or recommend sony product in future.

The person who repaired the TV had a 40" model. I could not find the correct LED assembly for the KDL-55NX720 when I looked a while back. I know for sure that the LED assemblies are a bear to get to. You have to separate the LCD display from the main chassis / LED backlight assembly, and then move the LCD screen to a safe place without bending the screen. If you flex the screen, then you will most likely break some internal connections in the LCD panel and not know it until you get the TV back together. You also have to keep the chassis grounded so static electricity does not damage anything.

In addition, there is a surface coating on the LCD screen. When you disassemble the TV, you have to place the TV face down to work on it. If you are not careful placing the TV down flat on a clean surface you will scratch the LCD screen. If you flex the screen you can also ruin the internal connections in the LCD panel.

Once the LCD panel is separated from the main chassis, edge trim and the wiring harness, the LED's are hidden behind a white screen. I only separated the LCD screen from the main chassis by 6 inches or so so I could place some rubber pads in the LCD screen corner.

No dogs or cats can be around either. I even get "dust" from the blankets and sheets that I had the screen lying down on. Easy to get that "dust" between the LCD panel and the LED back light / main frame assembly

Just as a note, my LCD screen has an intermittent internal panel connection in the upper right corner. I have performed a small repair to the LCD panel (AKA rubber pad) to keep some pressure on the bad corner, but I am not sure if the repair will last. I still have the TV taken apart. The repair has worked for 5 days now after three pad placements.

You can get the KDL-55NX720 service manuals in the site mentioned in the link below. I downloaded my manuals from that site. The manuals tell you how to remove the rear cover. More screws have to be removed than you realize. You also have to document where the screws go as you remove them. You will not remember where they go after the fact.

As far as time is concerned, 6 hours minimum to take the TV apart.

http://elektrotanya.com/sony_kdl-40n.../download.html

Here is a link to the thread that you mentioned.

LED Failure Thread click here.

If you can not find the replacement part before hand, it is a waste of time taking the TV apart. I am ticked off that I can not buy a new LCD screen at any price from Sony. It is cheaper to buy a new TV set anyway going by the old price replacement LCD panel price sheets. Then again, those were assembled LCD panel and LED back light / main chassis assemblies complete as a unit.

The random restart probably is caused by the main BATL board. They are hard to come by, and must be purchased used. A couple of them have sold on E-bay for around $130 including shipping.

Funny how you need a LED chassis assembly and probably a new BATL board, and I need a new LCD screen. Between us we probably have a good TV.

Keep this thread updated on what you are planning to do or if you have any questions. If my temporary panel "repair" keeps working, I will assemble my KDL-55NX720 TV next week.
