I couldnt find any official thread for the new D series so I thought I would start one. I just picked up a LN46D630 to replace my old LN40A530. I just wasn't ready to deal with the imperfections of LED TVs yet.

Observations:
The remote is much cheaper feeling than my old A series and is not backlit... bummer. Also, I had calibrated my A series when I bought it from info I found here on AVS and it was a great picture with great black levels. Out of the box the LN46D has pretty terrible black levels (supposed 250,000:1 contrast ration compared to my old A series at a supposed 60,000:1), so I'm hoping someone who knows about calibration will post proper settings.

My biggest complaint so far is the picture just looking downright weird when in motion. I know I'm going from a 60hz to a 120hz, and I know that motion scenes look smoother, if that is the sole reason then I can get used to it. When watching a documentary on the History channel, when they panned in an out of a still picture there was what appeared to be ghosting. Also even though the motion is much smoother, the picture seems to jump or skip often. I haven't tried turning off automotion yet, but I'd rather not have to in order to make the picture not jump.

I've only had this for a few days, and I'm still on Uverse (AWFUL HD quality, and the Uverse cabinet is literally in my backyard!). I will be switching back to Insight Cable soon, so I can't report on what the picture looks like with a decent HD signal.

Sounds like you have AMP on an aggressively high preset. The ideal settings you see reviewers recommend is to use the Custom mode and set Judder to 0 and Blur to 10.

Just to test, try turning auto motion plus off and see if it resolves the problem. If so, you can set to custom and work on tweaking it as described above.

Other than the amp issues, how is the picture?
Does the unit have a matte or glossy screen?
Also do you know which panel model you got?

Really interested in this TV, haven't found one locally to look at yet.

Thanks

Anyone know the differences between model LN46C630 (2010 model) and LN46D630 (2011 model)? I have a LN46C630, my parents are in the market for a 46" flat screen and I want to understand differences of LN46D630 vs. what I already have. Thanks.

ok i just got this tv ln46d630 the best thing i found to work is just lower the contrast to 94 and just keep every thing else the same and if the picture looks weird turn off the motion plus turning that off will also not make the picture jump or skip when watching channels other than movie channels now if you like that weird look just use the motion plus when watching movies

the difference between the c630 and d630 is the d630 has a red stripe going across the bottom of the tv frame its not that bad but i think the c630 looks better all black and the other thing which i hate is that the d630 has a plastic stand and the neck is black ulike the c630 which has a glass stand and glass see through neck don't be fooled like me all the picture on the internet show it with the glass stand

Thanks Eddie.
I too was struggling to find the differences between LNXXD630 and LNXXD630.

However I looked at the LN46D630 at wal-mart over the weekend. It was Walmart so I could tell anything about the picture quality, as all of their TVs were calibrated poorly.

However I hated that red plastic Touch of Color Strip on the front of the D Series. It's not horrible... but its not exactly a touch... it's very noticeable. It seems it would stick out if the room you were in was not decorated with Reds.

I picked up the LN46D610 at BJ's Wholesale Club. From the research I did it is exactly the same model as the D630 except for it has a dull blue "touch of color" strip on the bezel. The blue color is hardly noticeable. I agree with the posts above, the red on the D630 really sticks out. The blue really made all the difference when purchasing this tv.

I turned Blur up to 10 and Judder down to 0. Motion scenes look great after those adjustments. Watching NHL and NBA on Directv are always good tests and they both looked awesome. (If you're moving from a 60hz to 120hz give your eyes some time to make the adjustment.)

There is zero flashlighting in the corners of this set. I compared it to my Sony ex400 and the sony set has some visible flashlighting. (Still a great tv by the way)

As for ghosting. No issues that I can tell. Can anyone recommended a good, free program to test lcds?

Overall, I'm really happy with the set. Blacks are excellent and I'm equally impressed with the color after some adjustments. Planet Earth on blue ray was amazing too.

If you hate the red touch of color on the D630, you might want to look into the D610.

**********************************

UPDATE: 5/28/11 I have terrible banding problems on this t.v. There is also a bit of clouding. It is going back to BJ's tomorrow. Not sure if I should exchange or try something else.

I just bought the 46" c630. It was quite a bit cheaper than the d630 but the lower contrast ratio of the c630 has me wondering if the d630 is actually much better.

As for settings here is what I have found to work very well. They made me fall in love with my tv. :-)

Everyone is suggesting;
Motion Plus: Custom, Blur Reduction: 10, Judder Reduction: 0
But if i set with these setting i see clearly frame rate skipping at background of movie? even i set judder like 2-3 still continues.
I think, i should choose between soap opera effect (amp standart) and frame skipping (amp custom) right?

Does anyone know how C630/D630 compares to LG's LD520/LK520?

I'm planning on using the display for computing and gaming.

With Blur Reduction at 10 and Judder at 2, I see frame skipping on Netflix but not on DVD, BluRay, or HD cable.

I've recently switched up Displays.
I use to have the samsung LN40A650 (loved that display everything was just perfect)
I now have the samsung LN40D630..pretty similar than my previous one. TV and DVD/Blurays whatever is all fine and seems pretty much the same as before (other than this models AMP seems to be a lot more noticable than my A650...i use to have my old TV on medium setting for it so maybe that's why. Currently using Standard on the D630)

Anyways the one problem i'm noticing is gaming on this new model.
On the A650 it didn't really matter what settings i had, everything would work perfectly.
With the D630 it seems that games are a little laggy. So far i've only tried playing NHL 11 and Call of Duty. with COD the way the reticle moves and reacts just doens't seem right (laggy not as precise).
I've tried turning AMP to each diff settings including off and that didn't really fix the problem. I've tried the Blur: 10 and Judder: 0 and still nothing. It just seems like there a small lag between moving and it displaying...sorta like what Guitar Hero use to be on older HDTV's.
I haven't really noticed as much with NHL, i put Blur:10 Judder:0 and it seems to be fine. but COD is just a huge difference.

I'm playing these on Xbox360. Just curious if anyone else has noticed this or know how to make it seem better?

Thanks

I finally upgraded from 37" Sharp LC37D90 Aquos to the 46" D30.

The difference is absolutely stunning!!

I'm still playing around with it but I'm very happy with my decision. TBH, I wanted LED but with my Coupe MODS and Apple budget is tight.

I was so busy that I missed Lightnings/Bruins game, I wanted to see how Sports HD looks. I already changed my schedule tomorrow for the Sharks/Canucks.

Samsung has really gone down hill since the A models. The B models were TERRIBLE, with the C models being slightly better. My B has the WORST ghosting i have ever seen. So disappointed in that set.

These settings look pretty good to me. I used an Avia disc to calibrate it. The Spears & Munsil disc gave a horrible dark and muddy picture. I watch in a very dark room:

Picture Mode: MOVIE
Backlight: 10
Contrast: 60
Brightness: 60
Sharpness: 37
Colour: 43
Tint: G49/R51

Advanced: I left these at their default settings
CMS: Didn't change from default
White Balance: Left it alone
Picture Options screen:
Colour Tone: Normal
Aspect Ratio: 16:9
Digital Noise Filter: Auto
MPEG Noise Filter: Auto
HDMI Black Level: Normal
Film Mode: Off
Motion Plus: Custom, Blur Reduction: 10, Judder Reduction: 2

I would like to second the motion for an input lag test. I recently sold my old LN32A450 in the interest of upgrading to a newer Samsung, but was horrified to find out that input lag has become something of an issue with Samsungs, despite top notch image quality.

I'm also curious about whether game mode allows for you to change the settings as normal.
