Did you check your "Wide" button on the remote? Did you check your equivalent button (on my DirecTV remote it is "Format"). Let us know...Hope it is something minor like this.

Still unable to find a KDL65HX729 for the price I paid. It appears some retails do not have it in stock anymore. Amazon will not comment on it returning to stock but some of their third party suppliers still have some... Disappointed as it had a great picture but not sure what to think...maybe its going out of production?

Looks cleaned out. Dell had it, too, up until a week or so ago for just a little higher than Amazon's price.

Ironically I was waiting for a Dell cash back rewards card which came two days after Dell raised the price $500. Otherwise I would have bought from Dell and paid the taxes... Now they are out of stock. We'll see what the future holds. Maybe a new model.

How is the glare on the screen of the KDL65HX729? I see that this model does not have the gorilla glass that the 850 and 929 Sony models have, however, I'm curious if this unit has a matte-screen, or if there is still substantial glare like glossy plasma screens have?

I have the 55HX729 so I would assume the same screen. MEGA GLOSSY. However, the HX729 produces a breathtaking picture. I have heard that the Gorilla Glass on the 820/850/929 is less reflective but from looking at it in Magnolia at Best Buy, I can't really tell. The 729 series is about as glossy as a Plasma screen but, except for reflections during the day, produces a beautiful picture. A friend got a basic edge lit Samsung and the 729 blows it away. My 729 faces vertical blinds and I face south so I do see the closed blinds reflected in the screen during the day but I've learned to ignore it. It's a great set and has a beautiful picture. Hope this was helpful.

I've been thinking about getting the Samsung UN60ES6100 set due to the fact that it has a matte-finish. I went to a local TV store and it was one of the only sets, either Plasma or LED, that had a matte-finish. However, I'm weary on picking up a Samsung. I know Sony is one of the top tear companies to purchase from, and unfortunately, my budget cannot afford the 929. The 729 does seem to have great reviews and nice specs, and it's in a 65" which I want. However, the glare may be a problem. I'll have to see if I can find one to take a look at. Because it's a 2011 TV, I'm unsure if I'll even get lucky enough to find one.

In my two days of using the KDL65HX729 (matte finish) it did not have much of a reflection and I have a bright room (in CA) with large windows across from the TV. Since my KDL65HX729 broke I moved my KDL46NX700 (monolithic glossy finish) in its spot which has a lot of reflection. My wife who wasn’t exactly onboard to buy the KDL65HX729 has asked several times if I’ve found another KDL65HX729 as she does not like the reflections…Whatever TV I get will definitely have a matte finish…

The HX729 does NOT have a matte finish unless the 65" is different. Despite reflections, I think there's something to be said for a glossy, reflective screen.. I have a 3 year old Sony 52EX701 which has a definite matte finish, though not as matte as the really dull older sets and the glossy screened 55HX729's picture seems so much better. It could be the X Reality Pro Engine or the Dynamic Edge local dimming or other factors. I haven't seen the 65" in person but i do own the 55" and have seen the 46" and both screens very glass-like.

For anyone that owns the 65" version, how is the screen? Is it similar to the 55" screen and very reflective? Or is it more matted? I do agree that there is something to say about a screen that may be glossy and reflective but has a bright and crisp picture. It would probably make the glare less of an issue. However, I'm unsure if, during the day when it's sunny out and the reflection would be at it's peak, would the clear and bright picture still absorb the glare?

The 65" I owned was far closer to a matte screen so maybe call it semi-matte but it certainly wasn't glossy and know where near as reflective like my NX700.

Then, oddly, the 65" screen is different from the 55" or 46". Unless- your TV while you owned it, was in a non-reflective environment.

So here is my problem. Both Best Buy and my local Video Only does not carry the 729 anymore. They are telling me it's been discontinued and replaced with the 750. However, the 750 only goes up to 55" and I'm looking for at least a 60". So here's my dilemma. Amazon still carries the 729 in 65". Do I order it blindly and hope for the best? I'd hate to make such a large purchase without seeing it in the store, however, I'm running out of options. I just don't think the Samsung ES6100 is going to cut it and all other models I'm interested it are either too expensive, or the screens are too glossy. Any suggestions?

Don't know what to say. I DO know the 46" and 55" are extremely glossy so I would wonder why the 65" would be different. If I were you, I wouldn't want to order from some vague internet reseller on Amazon, not knowing the return policy. My suggestion at this point? Wait for the 929 to be near it's end (soon) and grab one at that time. it'll still be costly but much less and it's full array back lit.

The HX729 was in the same spot my XBR1 and NX700 have occupied, a very bright room with three large windows opposite, plus two other windows and a french door not far away. My NX700 has a glossy glass panel which is very reflective and my HX729 was very close to the XBR1 which I would call a matte finish. All I know is the HX729 was not very reflective and my NX700 is driving my wife and I crazy...

Too bad it might be discounted but the online availability tends to favor that. Wonder what Sony will replace it with.

Sorry I don't have any as I'm in the same boat. Not willing to pay $500 more for another 65" HX729.

I own a 65" HX729. It is a glossy set.
I can use it to look out my window if I stare at it from 150 degrees - there is not diffusion of the reflected image.

That's a good idea to wait until the 929 drops in price. However, I'm unsure if a $5,000 tv is going to drop enough for me to fork over the money for it. Plus, the 929 has gorilla glass, which I hear is quite reflective. However, I would think the brightness and clarity of the picture would overshadow the reflectiveness of the screen. Not sure on that though. Everyplace I go, the 929 is not on display. They only have it in boxes to sell.

All 65" sets out of stock w/ Sony. The glossy/semi-glossy/semi-matte/matte (lol) 65" 729 has been discontinued per Sony. Bummer. If anyone has a recommendation for a replacement set please opine. The 65" XBR929 is out of my price range. It should be back in stock into 2013.

I own the 55HX729 and really love it. The 3D is mostly excellent, bright, full HD with occasional crosstalk. HUGO being an example of too much crosstalk (whereas Avatar is nearly perfect). That being said, I helped a friend install his new 55HX850 and I know it's not 65" BUT it handled HUGO with near perfection. The scenes of that automaton that displayed the most cross talk are 99% perfect. Sony is not discounting very much and it seems they somehow have legal control over Sony reseller discounts because all prices seem the same across the board. The 850 outdoes the 2011 models with increased 3D performance. He too, wanted the 65HX729 but at the time, he wanted it at the deep discount price of a month ago but missed the sale. If you can live with a 55" display, the 850 is great. It's rumored a larger size would be available this fall but that may be a rumor. The HX729 is GLOSSY, LMAO.biggrin.gif

QUESTION: My 55HX729 is set to update automatically when in standby mode just as my 52EX701 does. However, the last three updates didn't happen when the set was off (stand-by) but, rather, I was prompted to do the update when I turned on the set. Anyone else have this experience?

I have my HTPC hooked up to my HX729.. Use HDMI for video and a receiver and optical for audio.. Well I wall mounted my TV and decided to ditch the receiver and just use the HDMI for audio as well... Turns out some of my DTS encoded videos won't play.. Says unsupported audio..

Any way around this (besides reencoding?) Dolby Digital play fine..

Thanks

Has anyone else had their HX729 randomly reboot on them? And if so, are you using the wireless internet connection, wired or neither?

It happened a few times some months ago and then stopped doing this. Sony gave me some technical explanation of which I forget. I have a WIFI connection. It hasn't happened for a long time but i know it was discussed here in this thread.

Thanks Steve.

I guess depending on who you talk to at Sony, some have an explaination and others don't. I think the explaination being given is if you issue remote commands during boot up it can potentially cause a reboot later. I don't buy this since I've turned on the TV using the On/Off on the TV and didn't press any remote buttons and it still happend.

I think the explaination being given is if you issue remote commands during boot up it can potentially cause a reboot later. I don't buy this since I've turned on the TV using the On/Off on the TV and didn't press any remote buttons and it still happend.
Has it happened a lot? It happened only 2-3 times a few months ago. I agree the explanations can vary and I believe I was told that other devices may have caused the re-boot. I also think it may have been a software glitch but so far no problems, knock on wood (or plastic).
