If I could, a few questions for you happy HX820 owners out there:

Firstly, what made you choose this set over the HX729? (or any other options you considered for that matter) The two models seem to be close in terms of specifications but one is significantly cheaper than the other. Was it the (admittedly awesome) monolithic styling or is there some PQ performance difference that I'm missing.

Secondly, I've been able to see the HX729 in person but have been unable to find somewhere to demo the HX820. The picture is nice for sure, but I wasn't all that impressed with the viewing angles. It could've partially been the environment, (a dimmed Magnolia floor) but I found that the HX929 performed noticeably better in this regard. Could someone please comment on their personal experience with off-axis viewing performance?

Thanks in advance!

I didn't even consider the 729. I narrowed down my possible options to the Samsung 7000 and the NX720. For my own reasons (bad experiences with most of the others) I wasn't going to buy from any other manufacturer. We could care less about the 3D, but having it is a nice option if we ever choose to buy the glasses and reconfigure everything to support it.

In my review process I went and viewed both sets and found the Sony to have the slightly better picture. The Samsung just has too much "soap opera" effect for me. My wife likes it, however.

Once we settled on the 55NX720 we started combing the Internet for the best price. In my search I found it on Amazon and given all of my excellent experiences in the past I had no hesitation in purchasing it from them. Ironically their site brought up the 55HX820 as an alternative. The price was nearly the same ($50 more) so it was a no brainer. 240hz vs 120hz for $50 more. We bought it for $2,399 from Amazon with free shipping and no sales tax.

Having had it now for about 10 days we have no regrets. PQ is excellent and we have no issues with viewing angles. Our room is about 18 x 20 with chairs and couches situated around it. I have sat in each of the chairs and can attest that the picture is excellent from all of them.

We are also IT professionals with nearly every Internet gadget known to man so the Internet features of the TV don't really interest us.

I thought some were under the impression that Television Info wasn't a reliable source of info? To be honest, I don't know who to believe. Cnet has more or less been regarded as reliable in the past, but David claimed that the HX929 had poor off-axis viewing. Based solely off of my viewing in a Magnolia, I'd have to disagree wholeheartedly. I actually did a bit of reading before going in and went with my fianceé. I told her "that's the high end one, but it won't be good for our living room because it washes out unless you're viewing from dead center." Yeah... I had to eat crow after that, but it wasn't like she really cared to begin with.

On the other hand, Television Info wasn't all that impressed by the viewing angles of the NX720. I'd say that it definitely has a wider than LCD average sweet spot. I'd have to agree that the HX729 is quite narrow, however. A shame since it's a really nice set otherwise.

You're correct that the HX729 does not have the Gorilla Glass monolithic design, but the screen is still glossy. The design is more similar to Sony's entry-level sets from last year. Fortunately, it doesn't have the brushed silver strip at the bottom of the bezel, but rather a brushed black one. The speakers do jut out from the bottom ever so slightly and it would've been more elegant if they just made the bottom flat, IMO. Of course, removable speakers are the best design of all as most don't use them anyway, but that's just daydreaming.

EDIT:

Thanks for the comment on 3D performance, but I guess that I should provide the transparency that I have little interest in the technology. If I could get a top-performing display without 3D it would probably be cheaper and that's what I would purchase. Unfortunately, it seems that high-end 2D performance and 3D capabilities are not made available a la carte in the current market. (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!)

Yea not sure what to make of Televisioninfo right now. I use it as a starting point and search Google to extrapolate from what they've pointed out.

In terms of 3D, I feel the same way as you. I don't own any device that outputs 3D right now so that doesn't matter too much to me as of right now. The reason I'm picking the HX820 is more for future proofing. Eventually in a few years I will be upgrading to more 3D capable devices so by getting a high performing 3D TV, I won't have to worry about poor 3D performance.

-------------------------

Really hope we'll see a price drop here in the next few weeks. I was hoping to see it dip to the $2,000 mark but I'm not sure it is going to happen as quickly as I want it. Did anybody watch how quickly last year's prices tumbled for their 2nd best TV?

Glad to see this official thread. I got this TV on july 4th weekend for $1500 on Amazon and I can't be happier. I currently have it paired with my ps3 and yamaha 3d capable receiver and it's stunning. This TV was to replace my 3 year old Samsung 7 series. I decided to go with this tv mostly because of the gorrilla screen and the deep black pixel when comparing to Samsung UN850 series.

How the heck did you get this for $1500?

pricematched to USappliance.com for $2200, and then 20% off from the kindle special that Amazon had. Amazon also included the Google blu-ray internet player for free, which I cancelled right away so I ended up with the TV for $1500. Sounds crazy but it worked out well so I can't complain

Crap! Didn't realize I could cancel the Google TV thing and get money off the set? Is that what they did? I wonder if I could return it?

BTW: My price above was wrong. I paid $2,299 for the 55", not $2,399.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think we are supposed to discuss price on this forum unless it's MSRP.

That being said I did return my free Google Tv Sony Blu-ray device that came with my HX820 to Amazon and was refunded for that part of my purchase. On my invoice it showed up as 2 separate purchases and I was billed for each item on my credit card. I would have cancelled the player before it shipped but was worried about something going wrong.

And now back on topic with the HX820...anyone had theirs professionally calibrated yet?

TV's are the only exception to Amazon's stance of not price matching.

Did not know. Thanks. Their policy:

Price Matching
With the exception of TVs, Amazon.com doesn't price-match with other retailers (including those who sell their items on our website). We do, however, consistently work toward maintaining competitive prices on everything we carry.

I wasn't aware either until somebody first mentioned it earlier in this thread. Really takes a huge worry off my mind because I wanted to order with Amazon to avoid the headaches/horror stories from some of their third party retailers.

Now I just wish I could find some kind of coupon to stack on top for some really great savings.

Just wanted to re-post this to see if any of the people who recently got HX820's have noticed, but has anybody played dark content/movies and noticed any flashlighting?

I watch a lot of movies from Netflix (mainly I get BluRay and sometimes stream) and noticed some movies have it and some don't.

Has anyone had their TV calibrated by a THX rep or the like, and if so, care to share?

I'd like to get some professional calibration settings up on the site to see how different panels compare.

Planning to get this tv by the end of this month. Hopefully Best buy will price match with amazon where it seems to be much cheaper.

Can anyone post a picture of this tv while it is off? I am curious to see how the whole monolithic design looks while it is off.

Thanks

From Amazon directly no less which I think is awesome. Not sure if I'll be able to get a better price in the next few weeks so I think I'm going to order now. Too bad I won't be able to use the TV for two weeks once it gets here due to our apartment being repaired.

I'd be glad to as soon as mine arrives and our apartment is repaired. Sadly the only picture available so far is a bit blurry!

hopefully gonna be pulling the plug on it tomorrow from amazon

have a question though, there is a warranty plan in amazon. my question is, is this the actual sony warranty plan? and it says 5 years. i know the tv comes with 1 yr warranty...so does this mean i will get an extra 5 years after that? or 4 years? and how soon do i have to buy the warranty for it to be valid with my purchased tv?? thanks

From what I read, it's a decent tv that is over priced-- but so far I am likeing mine. I haven't bought any glasses yet though.

BTW, are there any good 3d kits that don't include a transmitter? Or would I be better off just buying glasses separate?

This review puzzles me. They trashed the hx820's motion handling, but gave the hx729 pretty high marks for it. Aren't both TVs pretty much the same, sans the gorilla glass panel?

Don't put much stock in Television Info. I think it was already discussed somewhere else that they're unreliable.

I'm about to pickup the 55" model. Could someone else who owns this plrease verify whether or not it has issues with light leakage in the corner like the review above states about the 40" model?

Overall it seems like the 46" and the 55" have fared pretty well in terms of light leakage/flash lighting. I've based that on responses in this post so far and reviews read.
