I use Newbies settings and they're great. Haven't needed to have it calibrated after using these. Here's the last ones he posted for a pre Nov. 2012 build set which is what I believe you have. Go to page 384 post #11511 to get his settings. Enjoy.

+1

I was shocked by how good Newbie's settings look. Couldn't be happier.

What is considered s "good" build date? Month/year? Also, now I am reading about people getting this set for between 4k and $4800. Am I paying too much at $5250, sounds like it doesn't it? At least I have a 15 day return window if they don't want to budge on price anymore for me. That's a $1250 difference :/

Well, I called Sharp back and they said they will NOT fix my TV(dead remote sensor) and just get a return authorization from Best Buy. I thought the Elite was discontinued? I asked them this and they said that it was not.

Whoever you spoke to was flat out wrong. The Elite is most definitely discontinued.

Once I realized that the discrete "ON" command will work for a few seconds after the set is turned off, it dawned on me that I could create a 100% reliable macro using a combination of both the power toggle and the discrete "ON" command. You simply send a power toggle command immediately followed by the discrete power "ON" command. If the TV is off, even if it is in full standby mode, the macro will turn it on. If the TV is already on, the set will shut off and then instantly turn back on again. I tested it, and it functions perfectly. I'm lucky that this works on the Elite. Many TV's do not have the same kind of delay before going into standby. I still wish I knew why the discrete "ON" command doesn't work on my set, but this is a perfectly acceptable workaround. smile.gif
Very clever workaround!

It's very possible that they haven't changed the prices on the sales floor, but they are definitely on closeout for $29.99. I just got back from Best Buy about fifteen minutes ago, and I bought out the last four pairs they had in stock. I figure I might as well grab some extras while I can, and this is by far the best price I've seen them for anywhere. The ones I'm talking about come in a box that looks like this:

Well that representative was clueless. She actually laughed and said that it was never discontinued. The second one I spoke with said there they had no official word as to whether it is discontinued but that they had none in their warehouses. But, after speaking to Best Buy, they basically said that Elite was wrong and that they would not authorize a return 3 months after a purchase and they had no idea why they told me that. Best Buy did say they would see if they could help me out by finding a tech that could fix it but they doubted it since they had no Elite authorized dealers in the area either.

Elite did say they would give a Return Authorization Number to Best Buy if they could not fix it so I will see. But if I had ordered it through one of the vendors here, I would be completely out of luck. Let that be a lesson to anyone thinking about buying from one of these vendors that are not supported by Elite on warranty. I would have had a $6000 brick sitting in my living room of no value.

They would rather have you return the TV instead of fixing the IR sensor? That isn't very encouraging. I guess they don't plan on fixing the Elite TV's anymore. Very nervous about the demo TV I just bought.

It definitely makes one think twice before ponying up for the extended warranty.

Who do you mean by "those vendors here"? If you mean Cleveland Plasma, they are fully supported by Sharp - that's who I got mine from and am fully registered with Sharp warranty and otherwise.

That's exactly what I thought. Both Elite representatives tell me they have no techs in the area so the only solution is to get my money back. I am 2.5 hours east of Houston Texas though. I would probably be willing to pay half the bill if they would bring someone in. But I'm not sure they will even agree to that.

Side note for everyone looking for an elite.

Sharp pulled the Elites with reason of EOL (end of life) from Best Buy Magnolia's data base.

So all Magnolia's are authorized to sell their display models for really cheap considering (around 45-50% off).

Picked up a somewhat new 70" tonight for $4200 (new store, been open only 6 months).

Figured not that bad. Hope this isn't against the AVS rules pointing people in a direction of a deal.

Is this a very recent thing? When I bought mine just under two weeks ago, my store refused to go any less than 40% off.

Question. I registered my 70" on the Elite site:

http://elitelcdtv.com/

Do I also have to register it on Sharp's regular site?

That is an August 2011, same as mine.

There are slides that you can download from AVS, sorry don't have the link.

A Disney WOW disk is a good investment.

this is "good" serial.
Try not to look for defects.
If TV looks good for you just calibrate it to your liking.

for dead / stuck pixels use solid color R,G,B. http://www.checkpixels.com/
If you have PC connect to the TV it will even more easy to test and calibrate
http://www.avsforum.com/t/1393853/fork-of-hcfr-started-whats-needed/0_100
and check for those if you don't want to some else calibrate your TV

Good post, I used checkpixels last night before you posted this up and it worked great in full screen mode.

I used a monoprice swivel mount with my Kuro previously, it worked great with this one. It works out great to move the tv away from the wall for adjustments, and then push it back flat against the wall otherwise.

http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=109&cp_id=10828

What is a good serial vs. bad?

2018169XX is mine (xx because I didn't want to post the whole thing here).

It's an LED backlit LCD TV. Most importantly, it's a full array set, not edge lit. Here's a great article that explains all the different types of backlighting found on LCD TVs:

Sharp has not officially discontinued the Elite, for what that's worth.

Best Buy did recently provide instruction to the stores to begin selling their displays though as long as their warehouses were out of inventory. This is in anticipation of it's planogram location being used for a different model. Also, the stores will adjust the display pricing at their own discretion. Corporate does not dictate what to set them at.

I wonder if the people I spoke to at Elite are really clueless about the line being discontinued or are they are being lied to by the company to keep them from quitting too soon. Or possibly they are instructed to lie to the public when they call.

What are the vertical lines some people see called? I swear I see them on grey/white or dark screens. They look like they are about 2" apart and pretty even with each other. Is this normal for this tv? Or should I have concern? Im using newbies settings. I'm still within my return window. How do I test to get a better idea of how much is actually there? Thanks in advance.
