The Sharp 80" is replacing a Vizio 55".

I love the larger image, but as everyone knows, lesser-seen artifacts on smaller displays are increasingly magnified on larger displays. Good images are always source-dependent.
(DirecTV HR-24 HD DVR for TV and Panasonic BluRay DVD - both are HDMI-switched through Pioneer Receiver.)

I believe the viewing angle is inferior to what I had with the Vizio...the Sharp dims noticeably on either side.

Displaying a test pattern with a graduated gray scale (sure miss the test pattern HDNET used to broadcast) and using a Barco LE probe (displays x,y & Y luminance), I was able to crudely adjust the rgb gains & biases to get each of the measurements to x=.31 and y=.33 (my display only reads out to 2 values, so i couldn't achieve a full readout of x=.313 and y=.329).

i have no way to measure or plot gamma (although i did have to choose lower gamma to achieve my results).

After my "calibration" here's settings I have for now:

AV Mode: Standard
OPC: off
Backlight: +2
Contrast: +32
Brightness: 0
Color: +2
Tint: +3
Sharpness: +5

Advanced/
CMS Hue: all default/0
CMS Sat: red -5 (remaining default/0)
CMS Value: all default/0

Color Temp = Low
R Gain Lo +14
G Gain Lo 0
B Gain Lo -3
R Gain Hi 0
G Gain Hi 0
B Gain Hi -8

Motion Enhance off
Active Contrast off
Gamma -2
Film Mode off
DNR middle
Monochrome off
Range of OPC default/Max +5/Min -16

YMMV...

remember the 55" uses the ips panel, they have superior viewing angles. also i'm puzzled on your +5 sharpness i would think at that setting you would be seeing ringing.

Suzook,

I tried calibrating in movie mode also, but didn't seem to have as accurate color or overall punch for me...

are the settings you share used in movie, user, standard?

also, even though OPC=off, "range of OPC" still seems to have an effect.

thanks for sharing!

another problem i'm faced with is displaying the proper calibration test pattern.

HDNET used to broadcast a 10 minute test pattern...i don't believe they air it anymore.
the only way i can find to display a pattern through my HD-DVR is playing one through the DVR from youtube.

I've also used the avia and DVE calibration discs, but then when you watch TV again (which is 90% of our viewing), you're viewing from a different source again.

for those of you with the actual 80"... we stopped by BB today and we flipped between a blueray and the BB loop. the PQ was terrible. very grainy, motion problems, and super pixelated. i know they don't have the best source bc it's split a million times, but the samsung's next to it looked good. wasn't able to check the settings bc they were all n/a on tv mode with the loop. was this one just set up wrong or should i be worried about the above issues? up-sizing from a samsung UN55D8000. thanks

Not entirely accurate, several of the modes can be calibrated well. All modes other than Game have added processing/lag even when user adjustable settings are disabled.

Don't make any judgment based upon BB's horrible in house signal. A Blu ray feed will be more telling and yes these sets do have a grainy look to them if you are too close, an 80" set is simply not meant to be viewed from 6' (so keep your view distance in mind). Aside from that it is very likely that the set was not properly calibrated (as mentioned).

I've found that SOME BB's will set a model up that they want to move (as in sell NOW cause it's a bad seller) with a great feed & have other popular models look bad (on purpose) as a way to sell to the masses, the 80" is a Hot Seller right now & they are moving very quickly , So some B&M's will want you buy the lesser selling stock than a Hot Item as the Hot Display will sell anyway ....
I know it Sucks but that business !

Well, I guess my patience is wearing thin as I get older, because I finally threw in the towel and ordered one from Chris at Cleveland Plasma on Friday. It should be here sometime this week. I will try real hard not to see the 90" when it is released.

So, people with the 80... No issues with blurry movement or pixelation on panning scenes or scenes like water running in a river should be expected? The display was terrible but I haven't read any issues from this thread. Plan to buy tomorrow if I can get past the horrible blu ray scenes we saw and the in house feed. Don't want to be downgrading from our current 55u8000 which is great just for size.

Wow. That would be SWEET price. My local Costco is 45xx. Pretty sure the extra is not worth the extended return privilege.

Calling him is probably the best route. I probably ended up speaking to him for over 20 minutes. I didn't get the lowest rock bottom price that people have been quoting on this thread, but I didn't mind paying $200 over that to provide a little business for someone who is not only a forum sponsor, but is actually interested in the products and the hobby. It is supposed to arrive tomorrow; the kids will get the 4 month old 70" Quattron.

What about the 120 refresh rate? Any issues with blurry pictures with sports or action scenes? Saw a calibrated one today and was only running blu ray but did see some issues. Don't want to sacrifice quality for size. Or will just wait for a 240 version?
Thanks

I think it's been mentioned in this thread already that motion is very good. I've watched hockey a bunch and not noticed any DSE or motion issues. The occasional blurring of the puck, but since it's not a consistent issue, I blame comcast and/or NESN.

What settings are you trying out, I would like to graph them and see how they look on my 632?

Thanks,

about to pull the trigger ... just a few questions to those who have this display ...

#1 do you feel it's a better display than a Quatron ?
#2 do you feel that a Local Dimming display is a feature that is needed ?
#3 how does the set handle motion , as I feel the 120Hz is fine as the 240Hz is software anyway
I just don't want to wait for the New 844 that has 240 & L/D , I just don't want or need 3D or the problems that the Elites have .
What has impressed me is the LACK of issues with this display , I have a Sharp 60" now that is a 3 color pixel & no local dimming with 240Hz but that is shut off as I get better PQ with that off .
any way thanx for reading & all the great posts by those who have reported about this Display.................

I love my LC80LE6320 but now I am vascilating over the externded warranty. I know they are generally not a wise purchase but for a couple hundred bucks for a 4 year total I'm strongly leaning toward buying it . How many of you have purchased an extended warranty and what was your reasoning?

I was hoping Suzook would shed a little more light on the nicely priced Costco warranty. I bought thru Amazon...I dind it hard to believe they would offer that price to non-members on top of buying externally...

I've read varying reports...and would really like to hear something concrete or corrobative before buying it. Think I've got 60 days and times running out.

Oh and Fastslappy....I really don't think you can beat this PQ anywhere near the price point. Assume the next model will be North of $5500....don't you? If so...decide if the price up is worth the added features but that may take waiting for it to hit stores and see some buyer feedback/reviews.

As far as the Sharp Warranty I do know for a fact that Sharp will Replace a defective Display with a Sharp of equal or better value . They send out a technician & if he says the unit is defective they ship a new one & box up the old one . as far as the Costco thing that might not be true as to a replacement I don't know .

The Sharp warranty you can buy @ anytime as long as it's still under the 15 month time period IE:still under warranty & it's transferable...

As for waiting on the 844.....
yeah I'm gonna get this one(the 832 @ 80") as my 60" Sharp is basically the same type of display & I'm really happy with it . Just want that extra 20" of real estate......I sold my silver & gold ,now have the exact amount & will not even have to hold a CC balance It's a no-brainer ,,just waiting till US Appliance gets them back in stock

Oh and Fastslappy....I really don't think you can beat this PQ anywhere near the price point. Assume the next model will be North of $5500....don't you? If so...decide if the price up is worth the added features but that may take waiting for it to hit stores and see some buyer feedback/reviews.

Its true. 99 bucks (well 105 for non.members)
Otherwise get the sharp warranty

2 Gold Eagles with stated value of $50 each will get you this TV. If you wait couple of weeks it may even get you extra BD player, stand or who knows what else. Yup, all that for $100. Sweet deal.
