Sony quits OLED TV in the Consumer Market

Hope you're in the mood to pour one out, because the Daily Yomiuri Online has just confirmed that Sony is giving up the OLED TV in its consumer business.

According to the report, it has discontinued production of OLED TV sets for the mainstream market, and while it'll continue selling 'em to its corporate clients, it'll concentrate the home-use TV portion on LCD models.

For historians in attendance, they'll no doubt (fondly) recall the XEL-1 -- a devilishly thin personal OLED TV that never stood a chance at filling anything other than a luxury niche.

The same sect will also remember that it discontinued OLED TV sales domestically back in 2010, but exports to America and Europe continued up until now.

The real question? Whether or not those rollable OLEDs are still getting researched in a Sony lab; the futurist in us can only pray so.

I hope this is not true - maybe Sony just decides to stop selling XEL1 in the US and EU....if it is true then Sony's TV business is doomed and Sony would lose its final chance to regain its former glory.

Sony is dead.

''the company said it would continue its sales, r&d of organic EL panels for monitors used by broadcast companies and other corporate client.''

The way i see it they are staying in the OLED buisiness but stop making 'for home-use models' for a while. Techzine agrees with me ''if OLED takes off in the consumer space, it seems very unlikely that Sony wouldn't return to it eventually.''

As of late, Sony has been slipping and sliding. Their CEO Howard Stringer anounced lately that Sony is losing money on every TV set it makes as most of profit Sony makes these days is not from their electronic division. But rather from their Financial Services division, which includes life insurance, non-life insurance, and banking.

Sony's TV business is losing money because Sony does not make its own panels , it seems Sony still does not understand this and it's heading to the wrong direction....

Sony is dead.

When the OLED TVs take off Sony would buy panels from Samsung/LG/Panasonic then put them into its TVs....and would lose mony on every TV it sells just like the LCD TVs.

Stupid,stupid,stupid..

Sony is dead.

In addition to financial services, Sony makes lots of profit in their movie and music divisions as well.

Last month, their Play Staion sales were the lowest ever and they have been loosing money selling TVs going on 8 years now.

As a result they have shuting down their factories and instead outsourcing manufacturing to China.

Other once great brands (e.g. Polaroid, RCA, Emerson, Westinghouse etc.) have not done well with this approach.

....and Sony owns the bluraydisc:
- 1 dollarcent for every blank bluraydisc.
- a cut for each bluray game/movie sold.
- $9 for each blurayplayer sold.
- $12 for each bluraydisc-recorder sold.

Looks like those are the only divisions from Sony corporation that made money in last two quarters.
