It's freaking crazy how good it is. 1080i or 720p!
OTA is a great signal with lack of compression. I've had an antenna in the space below my roof (ranch house) ever since HDTV became available in Denver (first through OTA - cable & satellite came later). I became an HDTV convert by being able to access high definition content over the air - - especially football and other programming before they fully built out the HDTV towers in Colorado (they used to broadcast from the Republic Towers, downtown Denver, before the Lookout Mountain "Super Tower" was approved in 2008.)
It's also a great backup (antenna - OTA) in case your cable or satellite provider is having problems. (Also - - I found out that cable (Comcast) compresses signals much higher than Directv - satellite. I had to ditch Comcast when I couldn't properly run two HDTV sets in my house. They also blew off two home appointments which sealed the deal for Directv.)
Previously - - the quality of the picture was better via OTA as opposed through satellite running through my Yamaha RX-A2000. That was with an older Samsung HLT 5676S DLP set.
Now - it's a push with satellite and the capabilities of the Sammy ES8000. And, everything is upscaled to 1080P via the Yamaha RX-A2000. I'm wondering if I can run the antenna through the Directv receiver but I'm not sure I'd gain that much improvement. Plus - - by keeping everything on satellite - - I can switch back and forth, easier, to NFL ticket to see all the NFL games in hi def.
Lastly - - for those of you who have Amazon Instant Video (Streaming) - - the Ken Burns documentary "Prohibition" has some unbelievable old 1910-1925 black and white photos that show up beautifully on the Samsung set. I mean, it's like you're there.
I watched it late last night (I'm on vacation for the rest of the week) - - with a bourbon, of course!
Lastly - - if you do have Amazon Instant Video streaming service - - check out the foreign version of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" (adaptation of the Swedish novel by Stieg Larsson) - that has three movies and is subtitled. They are a great watch.
