If the TV was half the price I wouldn't care about the minor imperfections, but at $3200 I expect the TV to be perfect.......

This "issue" isn't a defect, it happens to all of the edge lit sets.
If you can't deal with it, you need something with a different backlight system, but keep in mind, they have their own issues, sometimes much more serious.
Also, set the backlight to 8, turn on the eco sensor, set it to bottom out at 4.
As mentioned above, 8 on these sets is equal to 15-16 on other backlight systems, you really don't need to set it above this, and if you do, you will see where the light converges.
A different brand will not solve your "issue", they all have their own issues, you need a different backlight system, or a plasma.
With your backlight set to 20, any sane person would expect to see issues.
