Bruce, I am in the same situation as you. I have been trying to decided between a Samsung and the LG. I would really prefer the LG9600 but no one seems to know when it is going to be released. I have been waiting on the Samsung ES7100 which is the same as the ES8000 except without the camera and voice controls which I have no interest in but it is also still waiting to be released. So the only two available today to compare is the two you looked at. I am going to HHGreg tomorrow to view the LG7600 vs the Samsung ES8000.
What I have read indicates that the LG is much better for 3D and the Samsung is better for non 3D PQ.

Bright and daylight pictures are just awesome. But after knowing what is black levels i have started feeling something is not right..(:

Hi,

Would someone like to answer on how does this set perform with different video files (divx,xvid,mkv,mp4) from external usb harddrive, and does it support subtitles (.sub/.srt) for the mentioned video formats ?

Thanks in advance.

the LM8600 models are currently available for about 10-100 dollars more than the LM7600 models( 47"- 55")

Anyone think it's worth it? Info on the 8600 seems really thin.

differences between the 7600 and the 8600 seem thin indeed: mostly the dual core cpu and aesthetics.

I've got the 7600 from hhgregg last Friday and will be returning it shortly.

I like the set and like the picture quality. I have accentuated backlight bleeding on the lower-left corner, but it doesn't bother me too much. The "local dimming" takes care of most of it anyway.

The deal breaker for me is the vertical banding which is noticeable during normal viewing (no special content necessary to spot them). Even my wife, while watching HGTV, has spotted them and she certainly doesn't go about looking for flaws.

The bands are more easily spotted while watching panning shots (sports). I will try to post pics later.

Good luck on finding a thin edge-lit panel that doesn't have banding/DSE to some degree. I'm on my 5th one.......

Is banding really bad on the new LG range then?

What about the Samsung ES range, talk of this banding and seeing photos of it in action is definitely putting me off upgrading from an old LG LCD tv.

I've done that, trying sets until I find a decent one, in 2008. All 2007 models had some bad issue and we ended up paying a premium for the (back then) newly released samsung LN-T4665F (3k).

My reasoning was that all those issues would have been resolved by now (clouding has to some degree), but to my surprise the panels got thinner, but not better (since my 2008 TV does not suffer from banding).

And again to my surprise, 4 years later I still have to spend 3K for a good/decent LCD.

I can't speak for others, but IMO it is VERY distracting because the bands emphasize movement especially in panning shots. The bands drag your attention from whatever else you should have been looking at.

So, I will return the set to the store and wait. Perhaps the LG 9600 may be worth another try, but I won't be going back to the store until I read some good reviews on a particular set.

Recorded by StickyWinkey at AVForums from his 9600. It looks like utter garbage for the price.

My 55LM7600 was delivered today (manufacture date April 2012) and I played with it some during lunch. I watched a little bit of the Dark Knight Blu-Ray. I have not noticed any flashlighting, vertical banding, or any other issues so far. The PQ looks great to me. The one thing I don't like is the soap opera effect when TruMotion is up too high. Luckily that's easily adjustable.

My previous TV was a 50" Panasonic plasma, and this is my first big LCD/LED. I am liking the picture a lot better on the LG. I think one of the problems with the Plasma is that there's a lot of light in my TV room and I really couldn't tell what was going on in dark scenes. I don't have that problem with the LG.

Maybe my newbie status when it comes to LCD is causing me to not notice issues that would be obvious to long-time LCD owners. But I'm just glad to no longer have to look at color-banding (which my plasma had).

I also tried one 3D disc (the last Harry Potter) and the 3D was awesome. My Blu-ray player is a PS3.

The only problem I've had so far is connecting to my WiFi network. The input only accepts up to 32 characters (even though it says to enter 8-64 characters), so if your password is longer than that, you have to change it. And the password/phrase cannot have any spaces in it. I called LG customer support and they didn't know any way around it other than changing the password, and said no one else had reported the issue.

Now I'm going to have to upgrade to an HDMI 1.4 receiver so I can have 3D and Blu-ray HD audio at the same time. Aaargh.

Anyway, I'm really glad I made the purchase (I did the ultra-cheap Sears deal they had going a few weeks ago). But we'll see what happens when I watch at night.

Best of luck with your new purchase. Would be great to hear the opinion of someone with first hand experience of both models.

All the complaints about the new tv types both plasma and led/lcd are very discouraging and confusing. Last TV was a 1994 Toshiba 34" CRT. A gross beast it was, but it worked perfectly for more than 17 years. Such performance does not seem likely with the current Models.

Things aren't made to last any more mate, in fact some things aren't even made to work the way they're intended. Such a drastic change since then.

It sure does... wonder if it's something that can corrected by a software update though.

In the same boat again have been using Sanyo till date never got a plasma or lcd. So sort of 1st into this technology. I agree sometimes it gets too confusing specially with LED dur to bleeding and so on.

Would be glad to share exp about 8600 once i receive..Will post it soon.

I'm thinking about buying 55LM7600, but I'm afraid it's too glossy and it'll be acting like a mirror, making (especially) dark scenes unwatchable. Could any one comment on that? I'm little bit surprised it's OK even in the bright room...
Till now I have mate 42'' so I don't have any experience with glossy screens...

It's pretty glossy/reflective, pretty much the same as my old plasma, so I'm used to it. Not sure yet if it's going to bother me in the long run. Dark scenes are still watchable, but you definitely don't want the screen facing a window or other light source during the day.

BTW, I did notice some minor flashlighting in the upper left corner last night in dark scenes (and with black bars) while watching in the dark. I forgot to play around with local dimming though to see if that had any effect.

Folks interested in an 8600 might want to check Amazon today.

55" LESS than most places are asking for the same size 7600.

Sorry if this has been covered, but does anybody feel like the image settings that they have specified are completely lost once they watch something in SD? When I go to an SD channel, everything becomes much brighter and flashlighting becomes much more apparent.

It seems like the settings are very localized, meaning that theres setting for every situation.

I just noticed that it seems like theres settings specifically for the no input screen (one where many notice the flashlighting) . When I went to check them with the No Input message they were totally different from my normal TV viewing, then when a source was picked the settings changed to my normal HD viewing

So maybe theres a specific setting for SD and thats whats kicking in? I wonder if I set everyhing for extra dark during the no input screen if that will eliminate a good bit of the edge lights.

a better manual would be highly beneficial

The price is for $1849.99 the one you saw it is not sold from amazon. Look to the right where it says more buying options. you should be able to find it A real good price

I saw it on Amazon as well. The only concern I had was their shipping time, sometime in June although other sellers seem to have them in stock and can ship immediately.

Did it say it will in June or that you should receive it in June? I've ordered stuff from amazon and had an expected ship date of weeks after the date I actually received it.

I checked this set out today and coming from an active Sony set I have to admit I did see a decrease in resolution slightly and viewing angles in 3d weren't as great as my Sony. That being said, I did notice the 3d popped out substantially more than my active set did and passive technology scares me much less than active. I don't want to have cross eyes 10 years from now because no one has had an extended time testing active. I'm paranoid but whatever. My question to the owners here is this:

I noticed while watching it in the store today (lm7600) that the picture, the whole picture seemed to shift right for about a second multiple times. Can anyone explain what this is?

Yeah I understand your concern. The price really hooked me though. It's $250 cheaper then the 7600 and is a higher model. It suppose to ship between june 7 and june 28. Works for me because were not sure if we are moving. So I will have some time to decide the shipping address

My parents wanted to get me a graduation gift and I had narrowed my choices down to the LG LM8600, 9600, Sony XBR55HX929, and Panasonic WT50. When I saw the $1800 price on the 8600 today I took the plunge and went with it. Now the wait is on for when it will arrive. Can't wait.
