Got our new LG 47" LED yesterday, and am wondering if buying an extended warranty is worth it.

So, do any of you guys have/or have used Square Trade, and is it worth it?

Thank you

There is a "search box" at the top of this page. Just type in "Square Trade" and you will see several threads on this subject.

So, the short answer to your question is "yes."

Whatever extended warranty you consider be sure to read the fine print before purchasing. You need to know whether and to what degree they will "pro-rate" your set in the case of a replacement, whether the warranty carries over to any replacement set, etc.

I had an extended warranty through Sears that just paid for the replacement to a defective, three year old Sharp LC52D64U.

For the replacement - a Samsung UN55ES6500 - I purchased a less expensive Square Trade warranty.

Spec-wise that sounds like a decent upgrade to me. I'm going to assume you had a 3 year plan on the old set. If you'd had the 5 year it would have carried over to the new one.

Yes, the Sears warranty was only about 8 weeks from expiration when the tech determined the Sharp couldn't be repaired economically (screen delamination).

The warranty credited me around $2k toward the Samsung.

I ended up with a 3 year Square Trade warranty from Costco; hard to beat $60 for an additional 3 years. However, Square Trade will only cover up to the original purchase cost, so if I have a $350 repair in the 2nd year, I will only have $600 remaining; if the set is uneconomically repairable in the 3rd year, they will give me $600. Still not bad for $60.
