I just picked up the 55" version of this bad boy. I have not had much time to play around as I am currently unpacking from my recent move, but I was able to at least hook up my HT. I watched the first 10 minutes of Avengers Blu-ray on my PS3 and I was BLOWN AWAY by the picture on this set. I'm coming from a 7 year old 47" Philips, bare-bones, 60hz 1080p set. The difference is incredible. Too bad my local cable provider doesnt come to install until Tuesday... It looks like I will have to wait until October before I can watch my Leafs in HD on this set... frown.gif

As far as settings, like I said, I havent had much time to play, but I DID turn OFF pretty much all of the "special features". Looks amazing... Any tips would be most welcome.

Cheers!

Question regarding calibration:

Is it recommended to make use of RGB Full on a Playstation 3, and Extended Visual settings on the Xbox 360 for the HX85 TV? The settings on the TV says it supports RGB Full, but I'm starting to think it might be crushing the blacks, although I do ned to confirm it completely via a calibration disc.

What is the overall concensus on this?

Good question that I'm also interested in.

I feel like I haven't set this TV up for the best Xbox 360 performance yet. Would love to get some console gaming settings and advice.

Thank you for response. I use Clear or Smooth for close to real movement (Standard is a mess), Virtual Reality Auto and Film Mode Off.
Still, for regular TV shows, only the front facing objects are crisp and clear, what is behind them is fuzzy (doubled), It is not bokeh, but rather fuzzy images.
When watching movies (HBO HD), my eyes detect not so real movement acceleration that creates dizziness.
I turned off everything fancy, except Black Enhancer (high) and Smooth something (Low).

There are moments when the TV colors are so beautiful and the images are great and moments when I want to throw it out of the window.
I will try to post a picture with the doubled image.

Also I noticed when watching James Bond Casino Royal (from the blue rays collection) a sea of pixels in various scenes - looks over processed.
I have the TV for more than a week.

Over processed sounds like reality creation to me, which isn't needed for blu ray. The noise good just be noise inherent to film which is completely normal.

Also you have gone up a fair amount in size and your viewing distance is pretty small. This will show up poor sources. And also make noise from film more apparent.

Another question.Am I missing something?I played Call of duty 3d looks great. When I push 3d button to convert 2d to 3d it looks like crap, unwatchable.Am I doing something wrong?
Otherwise how could Sony or a other companys say that 2d to 3d is a option.
Thanks

hey guys, figured this would be a good place to ask this question. I am in the market for a 55 to 60 inch TV. My main room is quite bright, so plasma is out.

I am considering the Sony KDL-55HX850 (even though it is last years model) and the Samsung ES8000 and F7100 models.

Is this TV still competitive at an 1800 dollar price point? Seems like a great deal, and the reviews are glowing from owners and from professional reviewers.

Any feedback would be great. My budget is around 2K max. I typically don't replace TVs often, so I want something that will last. This sony is at the top of my list.

Perhaps you'd be willing to share where you could pick one of these up?

B&H are fine, but it's a used unit. I wouldn't touch others myself as they aren't authorized Sony retailers.

To me, it matters. My girl always gets mad at me for tweaking my settings on this TV. I think I have them RIGHT where I wan them now. I will be glad to share with you guys. It may sound silly, but I actually keep an excel spreadsheet updated with all my settings from day 1. I have had this lovely TV for a while now so I have a little of experience with it. Everyone that comes over, love my setting and I hope that y'all will too. I usually roll with NEUTRAL and WARM1 settings for my PS3 and 360. I also set my HX850 to FULL for both systems' inputs. For 360, please use EXPANDED. For PS3 please use FULL or you will not like my settings. But that will be your bad. lol. One last thing which is very important. I have my POWER SAVING set to LOW under the TV's preferences. Please try my settings EXACTLY like I post them and maybe you will like what you see. And please don't criticize them before you actually try them. Settings are below. These are for gaming ONLY. The last two settings on the right are my most current settings that I am still enjoying. I also want you to know that the 360 settings are more polished because I play it more and have more games for it. My tweaking has been a very lengthy process and you must understand that you will have to play many different games to get great settings. In other words, these settings were made to make ALL games look good. Enjoy and please give me some feedback.

These are GAME MODE settings. If you want my Standard setting with the XR960 for games where controller lag does not matter(Final Fantasy etc.), then you will have to try these and tell me you want MORE!!!!!! But seriously, please try the neutral and warm1 settings. They both look good but some games look better with warm1 and mostly all look good on neutral setting. Peace.

My best friend just bought the 60" F7100 Sammy. I got to play with it a little bit. I can honestly say that I like my HX850 more. F7100 has clearmotion 720 vs HX850 XR960. They both have dual core processor. I cant comment on the picture too much because he just got it a couple of days ago, so of course the picture is better on my TV. LOL. I'd say find an HX850 and wait till its time for 4K, OLED, or Sony's Crystal LED. Dont waste too much money on the latest and greatest ATM. Save for the next new technology.

Buy it if you want to buy now. For 2k you won't get a better set, I love mine. Basically if you get a good signal you will get a pristine picture. I can't imagine how a picture could be any better, other than maybe a bit darker blacks on some sets such as plasma or the 950, however I could care less, good enough for me, and with plasma the whites are yellow. Mine has no dead pixels, minimal flashlighting which is not even noticeable during regular viewing. It is a really good set.

That is all.

Have you set the tv to the correct country?
Do you have analogue or digital signal?

Does anyone know what the SMB function does that is found when going - Home -> Display -> Video Settings -> SMB

There is no description, and I have never seen it mentioned in terms of calibration advice.

Also for those who have calibrated their TV's and use game consoles - Do you use RGB Full on the TV and console, or Limited for optimal picture quality?

use full for both tv and console. or reverse it and use limited on console and tv. It really dont make too much difference. games are made using rgb. So I use full rgb always.

I hope someone can help me. I bought a 46HX850 recently and LOVE it. Tremendous TV!

But I've got one problem.

When I'm watching shows with logos, or with some print at the bottom (like CNN often does), I can't see the whole print. For instance, the History Channel logo is cut off, which means I'm not seeing the whole picture.

What am I doing wrong?

I've checked the 850's "Wide Mode" settings and I have it on "Full". I see that it's also set to 1080i 4:3.

Am I doing things correctly or did my wife or I hit something wrong?

Thanks in advance...I can post pics if need be...

I think the display should be 1080iHD 16:9. That's what mine says and it's fine. I don't think 4:3 is the correct ratio. What source do you use? Cable/satellite. When I first connected my TV, the cable box was set to 720p. I had to call Comcast, they walked me through how to set it to 1080i.

Thanks, Music. Would you happen to know how I change the 850 to 16:9? Is that something I do on the TV, the Dish Network box or the Yamaha receiver it flows through?

Thanks again...
