Currently which brand does provide a good smart TV platform with wide range of useful apps?
Is a smart tv really a good choice today as there are many complaints about no flash, bad web browsers etc..
Should it be one of the main factors while buying a tv?

Web browsers aren't very good on the smart tvs, due to cumbersome interface, lack of flash, etc.

Instead the selection of smart tv internet apps are whats important.
I find Panasonic Smart TVs have a good selection including for movies: Vudu (HD & 3D support), Amazon Instant Video, Netflix
Samsung Smart TVs have a similar selection of apps but lack Amazon Instant Video which purportedly has better video quality than Netflix streaming video.

Might be useful to post a list of the smart apps each brand provides and key ones they don't provide.

I know Samsung no longer provides the popular Amazon Video on Demand service, that offers free streaming of many titles if you are an Amazon Prime member.
Reportedly amazon and vudu have higher bitrates available and higher qualiity video streaming than Netflix.
I know Vudu has HDX which provides full 1080p HD resolution and DD5.1 audio with a 6-9Mbps internet connection.

Actually am not currently subscribed to any paid services like netflix etc. which provide movie streaming.
But i would like to have apps for playing videos from sites like youtube (this is available on all tvs), vimeo and other video hosting sites..

If Sammy is any indication, you are going to be paying top dollars for smart features on a TV today 2012. Most people here would tell you buy a TV for its PQ, then purchase separate box(es) to augment your other needs, but if u insist everything inside TV, OK, your money.

Am one of those people who question WHY BROWSE ON A TV? Sure looks cool for your newbies, has that BECAUSE I CAN DO IT quality, but really a wireless keyboard is mandatory IMO, otherwise u gonna control the thing via a 10-buttons keypad? U must posses a high-pain threshold. Keep your browsing activity with your laptop as God intended, until they have FLASH on TV, then MAYBE.

A month ago I was browsing through Amazon on the Sammy E5000 series and lots of people then complained about this unit freezing up on the Smart features. They will get it ironed out *eventually* am sure, but do I wanna be the guinea pig for the vendor? Your call.
thiao and bindu like this.

Solution: FREE. Explanation: I will have to charge$ you.

Actually i also wasnt bothered much about the smart tv thing. I am about to buy LG ls5700. And just to check whether the smart tv feature was really useful then i found nothing good about the lg smart tv.
So i thought when am paying for a tv and it provides a certain feature then it should atleast be useful.. Today almost all the tvs provide the smart tv feature. But i guess its still not the time for smart tvs.
As you said better stick to PQ i wont bother much about these features. Thanks for the help.

I have a 2 year old Samsung HDTV that I love, but it did not have internet connectivity.

Considered buying a new 'smart' model, adding one of the many boxes available in the $50 - $100 range or a new DVD player w/ smart TV features.

After considering all the pros and cons, I decided to buy another laptop and never looked back.

For $349, I found a Lenovo Win7 laptop with 15.6" display, dual core i3 processor, 4 G RAM, 320G HD, optical DVD, 3 x USB and HDMI (for connecting to the HDTV). A also added a Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse for $29.

Much cheaper and capable than buying a smart TV, portability for the future, full/unrestricted internet access w/ any browser, simple navigation, storage and a game console.
