AU Optronics (AUO) is reportedly working closely with Japan- and China- based TV vendors to promote 84-inch 4Kx2K LCD TVs in order to compete with high-end TV models made by Korea-based TV vendors, according to industry sources.
Japan-based TV vendor Toshiba will put out an 84-inch 4Kx2K TV in 2013 priced at JPY$1 million (US$12,700) according to media reports in Japan while Sony will reportedly be doing the same. Sources said that AUO will most likely supply panels to the vendors, which will help AUO expand its product portfolio and influence in the TV market.
The sources also said the Japan-based makers are forming alliances with AUO to compete with Korea-based TV vendors. LG Electronics released an 84-inch 4Kx2K TV priced at US$22,000 at the end of July in South Korea, which is expected to hit markets globally in September. The sources said that while high-end large-sized TVs have limited markets, Japan-based TV vendors nevertheless expect 84-inch models to generate profits and want to counterbalance competition with Korea-based vendors.
The sources also said that they only expect to see shipments of a few thousand of 4Kx2K TVs by the end of the year but that shipments will gradually increase to for million in 2016 alone.
Additionally, China-based TV vendors Skyworth and Konka are preparing to release new 4Kx2K TV products during the October 1 holidays in China, indicating the vendors are moving towards making high-end units. However, sizes of the TVs have yet to be confirmed and there is only speculation that AUO will be providing the panels.
