My only TV is a several-year-old Samsung 26" LCD. It's way past time to upgrade.
I live in an apartment and space is at a premium, so 42" is about as big as we're going to get. The problem is the TV makers aren't really making 42" sets with relatively high-end features any more. It seems all the good sets are 50" and up.
My priorities are deep black levels (we watch a lot of movies) and off-angle viewing (our room isn't that big so we can't all sit in the sweet spot). My focus for about a year was therefore on plasmas, but just as I was getting ready to pull the trigger on a Panasonic TC-P42UT50, they disappeared from retail channels as Panasonic decided there wasn't demand for decent 42" sets. And now it seems nobody even makes a 1080p 42" plasma, let alone one with great black levels. Am I really the only one who wants a set smaller than 50" with great PQ?
So I'm finding myself in LCD land and wondering which direction to go. The LG 42LM4200 seems like a contender (LG claims it has a higher contrast ratio than their other 42" sets). Likewise the Panasonic TC-L42ET5 and E50 (is there a difference in contrast ratios between them, or is the only difference 3D? I can't find specs). What else should I be considering?
