Hi all:

I am looking to buy my girlfriend a tv for her birthday in a few weeks. I like the price point of these 3 tv's (700$ on amazon). My girlfriend doesn't care for 3D, and I don't think she needs a Smart TV either since she already has boxes for all her stuff - and I'm looking to minimize cost anyway.

The Samsung is not LED, so I'm thinking of booting it from the consideration, but thought I'd list it in case it is the superior unit in all other respects. She is in no way a video or audio phile, but I want to get her a decent unit, particularly with respect to picture. If there is some model that costs an extra 100-200 that I should strongly consider as well, I'm all ears. Would love to hear any feedback on these. I am partial to LG myself, but she may have some brand loyalty to Panasonic - this is a surprise so I can't ask her anything. Appreciate any input you guys could provide.

Thanks in advance.

That Samsung is a great TV and has the best blacks and contrast of the three while still having accurate color. I would pick it over the Panasonic anyday and probably the LG too.

Thanks for the input. I'm a bit surprised to hear that the samsung is that much better. It's going to be hard for me to pick it over the LG because the LG is LED. I agree with dropping the panasonic. Any other inputs?

I would still say the Samsung is best, in fact I've seen the LN46D630 in store recently (while shopping for the Samsung UN40EH5300), and it looks great.

I was leaning that way too, but now the price jumped nearly 200$ on amazon! Still worth it over the LG at an extra 200$ ??
EDIT: $680 at BB. with tax that makes it ~$750, compared to the LG at $680 via amazon.
From the research I've done, it sounds like you simply can't get the picture quality I am hoping for with edge-lit LED - so I think the Samsung is a good buy for me (her). At this point I just hate that I got stuck paying the near 10% california tax.

I landed on the Samsung. Thanks for your input, Plasma. I'm giving it to her in 2 weeks, and I'll describe my decision process and if she wants, we can exchange it for the LG (though she isn't very picky about her tv so I doubt it).

Which panel version did you get? I believe the two most common are SQ01 and SN02. SQ01 is a Samsung S-PVA with good viewing angles but (possibly) worse screen uniformity while SN02 is a CMI S-MVA with solid screen uniformity but narrow viewing angles. Both have the best blacks of any LED/LCD remotely close to this price range.

Not sure, I will check on the box when I go home in a few days (spending the weekend at her place). It was the last one left at BB - the sale price was moving the units pretty fast.
