I am trying to decide between buying a Sharp 80" Quattron LC-80LE844U TV vs. Mitsubishi WD 82842.

Any suggestions on the difference in picture quality?

Well for starters I believe the Mitsubishi is a Rear Projection DLP and the Sharp is a LED. Hands down...get the Sharp. I have the 60LE832U and LOVE it

Is the rear projection an lower quality picture? cabinet depth is not an issue for me. I want the best picture I can get in an 80" product

Knowing and owning both DLP and LED even not considering the depth the LED is the better choice. That's my opinion based on seeing both of them kind. I would also stay clear far away from Mitsubishi, not only are they considered "low end" or "off brand" but ANY sets from that brand I ever saw never compared to name brand sets. Taking all that into consideration the Sharp without a doubt is the one I would get

I owned the Mits 82837 and went to the Sharp 80" 632U. There is really no comparison. The Sharp's PQ is far better. The only caveat to that is the off axis viewing on the Sharp. If you are veiwing at more than 20 - 30 degrees off axis the PQ starts to fade.

Really? Mits is far from off-brand and low-end. They have perfected DLP and pushed that tech as far as it can go. Their older CRT based RPTV's were state-of-the-art in their day. We're not talking about vizio.

my comment was not to choose the mits DLP over the sharp (I'd also vote sharp). the comment was to offset the comment that mits is "off-brand" and "low-end". couple of fails at reading comprehension in this thread.

I have both dlp and led (Mits and samsung, vizio).
Mitsubishi is far from being low end. Who ever said that is not very old or dosen't like mitsubishi for whatever reason.
DLP is not going to be as good of a picture as led primarily because its not as clear in dark situations for normal viewers. ( in bright rooms)
In a dark room calibrated it will perform as well if not better with fast motion images.
That being said if I could afford 4500 compared to 1500-1800 for a DLP @ 82" then I would buy the sharp.
I will be pleased 100% of the time, If I buy the DLP the 10% I'm not pleased with it I just need to say to myself,
I saved 2500 for my 4k TV in two years that will be 95" and better than both.
Good luck and hope you buy the sharp I think I'm going with the Mits.
But which one 742 or 842 ......or should i go 840 or 740 dammit maybe i'll just take a loan and get the sharp!!!
