I was almost ready to buy the HX850 for $2000 when I saw that my local best buy now has the HX929 for $2200. Both prices are for the 55" models. I was able to clarify that the 929 price was for a new item and not a floor model or open item or a refurbished item.

I have been reading up on both these models and am aware of the relative strengths and weaknesses of both these models. However, from my personal observations in the store, I couldn't notice much difference based on picture quality, screen reflectiveness, viewing angles, or uniformity. The only difference I could notice was that the 929 seemed to have deeper blacks.

Please advise:
- Should I just go with the 929 for $2200?
- Are the 850's reported advantages in viewing angles and screen reflectivity really significant or noticeable (the TV will be placed in a wide and bright family room opposite windows)?
- Should I be worried about any issues over the last remaining 929s (the best buy rep told me that he did not have one in stock, but that he should be able to order one for me if I buy one)?

I'd prefer to get the HX929 with local dimming over the edge lit any day. The HX929 is the top of the line model and I doubt the HX850 has advanced so much in features to beat a local dimming set.

iatacs you might be surprised that the HX850 comes very close to matching the 929 as does the HX750. That said I think the HX750 matches the HX850 PQ and blacks wise.

I agree with above posts. The advantage of HX850 over HX929 would probably be the 3D performance. HX850 has new "4x High Speed 3D Panel", which HX929 doesn't have. New HX950 does. I haven't actually experienced it myself but it is supposed to give you far better 3D performance. If you don't care much about 3D, I would definitely go with HX929, Full-Array Local Dimming!!! If you want both, you have to go with HX950:)

What about this offer .....
I have an offer from Sony for a HX850 for $1060 or a XBR HX929 for $1566. Is the HX929 a better deal at this price of am I wasting my money. Any help is appreciated. I know the 929 has Full array local dimming, but Ive heard the 850 has some improvements too. Is the 3d much better

I don't forsee any issues with buying a model that's been superceded.

I'd prefer the HX929 purely because of the full-array config. over the edge lit. That being said, the HX850 is still very solid performer. I don't think you can wrong either way.
