I will not actually be listening to any audio through the TV itself. I will have an HDMI video input from my comcast cable box going to the tv and the audio going from the cable box to my sony 5.1 through an optical cable. As far as anyone knows, will this "sync issue" appear with a setup like this?

Any thoughts or comments would be very helpful!

Hard to say for sure......there is a FW 1.1.15 that is being pushed out by Vizio that will correct the lip sync issue. Each person has a different setup so there are 2 many variables to track and make sure it will work to your liking. I would suggest getting this unit......report your tracking information in this thread:

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1450621/vizio-e601-a3-how-long-have-you-had-this-unit

Make sure you look for a serial number 46 & above so far these are on the safe side with no reports of a black screen.

Try your setup and report back so others with a similar setup can chime in....I use the speakers on the TV and they are awesome for my room.

Thanks for the advice Montecore. I'm not really sure how I'll be able to check the serial number before purchasing since I'm going to be getting through Amazon. Perhaps I'll be able to contact them somehow about this before I confirm the order.

Is there any word as to when this new firmware is actually going to be pushed out?

Has Vizio actually issued any statements or posted anything on the Vizio web site that the Firmware 1.1. 5 is a fix for the lip sync issues, or is this just a statement made here by forum users ?

I've looked everywhere and I cannot find any statements from Vizio stating that these sets even have a lip sync issue, however, I have read hundreds of reviews in areas all over the internet and almost all of them notice lip sync problem to some degree. Some people may not even notice it , others don't write reviews, and most don't go into forums such as this one. My guess is every E601-A3 has a lip sync issue to some degree.

My new replacement has it, although you really have to look for it , it is there, and it did not appear until my set was a week old... So I'm just curious as to the validity of the statement that 1.1.5 firmware is a lip sync cure. I seriously doubt that it is... If you have anything from Vizio that says it's a cure please post it here.

Thanks,

1) lip sync......which will be corrected with FW update 1.1.5. Also keep in mind there are too many variables to track because everyone's setup is different.
2) Black screen of death......I truly believe that Sharp unloaded a large quantity of defective LCD panels and we need to make Vizio well aware of the stats that have been analyzed to make them hold true to replacing all the defective sets.

Lets take a look at all the serial numbers as of 1.16.13. Please keep in mind there were a few that returned black screen units and did not know the serial # of the defective unit so this will potentially skew the results. However they did report the # of the new set.
38 2
39 1
40 4 (ALL BLACK SCREENS OF DEATH)
42 1 (BLACK SCREEN)
43 2
44 2 (ONLY 1 BLACK SCREEN)
45 3
46 6
47 2
48 2
49 5
50 1
51 1
60 (I do not believe this is accurate....I have never seen a 60 reported before)
this is all good information, but we need a couple of hundred reports, so far we have very few units listed here, lets go folks, if you havent taken the time to do this, please do!!

football looks amazing on my seetings as well...i tried all the settings, and the pre programed sports settings are way to brights, any of the settings that add arificial enhancements to me take away from the picture....when some of the settings are on, you can see the picture auto adjusting for that setting, and to me it just looks weird and its distracting when watching tv, as i seem to be more sensitive to these settings and find myself focusing on the picture changing vrs watching tv....

all the different picture "modes" are nothing more then pre programed picture settings, if you change any of them you are now in a "custom" picture mode....so in the end, all you did was select football mode, then you made some minor setting adustmensts, i notice you bumped up your sharpness, and under color temp, you have "cool" listed, but you changed all of them to your likeing, so you are in a custom color setting as well....

when i got my new tv, i made sure that i made all of my adustments under the custom mode so as to leave the factory settings factory...

at the end of the day, its all subjective to the user, so what looks good to you, might not look good to me....i used the cnet settings as my base and made adjustments from there as none of the factory settings looked good to me, all over the top bright with really bright colors...with the exception of movie, to dark....go figure

Is this some BluRay player artifact, a LCD TV artifact or some weird artistic decision by the filmmaker/cinematographer?

Watching Looper DVD on my cheap BluRay player via HDMI into my replacement Vizio 60".

On dark scenes where there is a bright single light in the background, a neon purple/blue horizontal line extends from the light to the edges of the screen. It almost is reminiscent of the old star filters that some filmakers/photographers used to spice up lights in the background.

I haven't seen it on any other source/content so I am prone to think it was something the Looper folks decided to add for fun?

Anyone else see this artifact?

LOL. I wondered the same thing. smile.gif I'm rocking a 39 serial number and just waiting for some massive failure or other. I think that light line was peculiar to Looper.

that seems to be the case. i really doubt it was a netflix issue as the only thing that changed in the setup was the tv, but it very well could have been.

either way, i won't have much to report to night because the Hobbit has hit the "$5 movie list" with Marcus theatres so the wife and i are going to see that tonight after work.

As a potential new buyer, I'm trying to figure out just when this sync issue appears. It sounds like from this post that when using the smart TV apps like Netflix, the problem appears. Does the problem also potentially exist when you are listening to audio that comes directly from the cable box. Like I said in an earlier post, I will mostly be watching either cable tv or my mac mini with Plex. Both of those have an HDMI out into the TV (for video only) and the audio from them goes directly into my sony 5.1 system via toslink and bypasses to TV completely. Obviously I will indeed also be using the smart tv apps like Netflix and hulu but not just as much. I'm watching this thread closely and very interested in any comments about this issue and just when the FW update is expected to land ...... and it's also why I'm temporarily holding off ordering from amazon at the moment.

The one and only time I had a lip sync issue it was directly through the Directv DVR. I have my Vizio hooked up like this: PS3/Directv DVR/XBox 360 all going to the TV via HDMI and the TV outputs audio via TOSLink to a Vizio 2.1 sound bar. The time I had the issue it was horrible. It wasn't just a few milliseconds off it was many seconds off. And it got worse. I would experience a little drop off of the audio and each time I experienced the drop off it would get further out of sync. I was watching the Sony Movie Channel and watching "Five Easy Pieces." I was aware of the ongoing sync issues with the set and I changed all the settings with both the TV and the DVR to output LPCM audio (which is fine for me since I'm only using 2.1 audio anyway) and I haven't experienced any issues since. I've never experienced any trouble with the TV's apps. Netflix/Amazon have been flawless. In fact I think they play better through the TV than they do through the PS3.

If you look back through these threads there doesn't seem to be any commonality to the sync problems.

Oh and BTW montecore those are interesting stats. I find it amazing that all 4 of the 40 series that have been logged are black screen of death (BSOD™)tongue.gif

Thanks crawdad62. I did indeed look through the multitude of posts here and you're right about the lack of commonality to this problem. But from what I can tell, it seems to pretty much mostly exist when the TV itself is processing the sound like in your case or the earlier one

sweet!

you'd think since they have a USB port on these TV's they'd allow for a user upgrade.

i mean hell most pc motherboards now you can just load the firmware onto the root of a flash drive, switch a jumper around and boot the PC up with the flash drive in place for an auto upgrade. don't even have to do anything but just wait a few minutes and watch some LED's blink.

......

Actually, I think the mechanism that Vizio uses is that the TV will download and update while it is off, then give you a status message when you turn it on. Having it on may actually keep it from updating.

I chatted online with someone from support at Vizio today as well about the FW update. She said that it's out and being implemented now. I guess they decide who it's pushed out to by some method ... maybe model or serial numbers??

Just got the fw update to 1.1.5. I am a little worried since I have a serial number 40, but I have had no issues yet.

Anyone know if Vizio post a change log for the firmware.

I was thinking the same thing. My Sharp isn't internet enabled and that's the only way I can get it but if Vizio is pushing 100 installs at a time you'd think they'd allow you to download it and install it yourself on your time. Oh well patience.

Received my replacement unit from Vizio on Friday(1/11/13), 14 days from placing my claim with Vizio.
New unit has 51 Serial Number.
So far working perfectly except for 1 instance of VERY BAD, increasing over time lip sync with a DVR recorded show via HDMI 1. The lip sync timing of audio preceeding vidio was small but continued to increase over viewing time and it did not go away when stopping, pausing, rewinding or forwarding the video. Very weird thing was that the commercials were NOT out of sync... so it leads me to believe that the lip sync was something specific to the audio format being sent to my DVR by the provider for only the show. This is not uncommon as I commonly see the incoming format change when watching TV when I use my AV Pre/pro. Other than this ONE single show, I have seen no lip sync problems at all in many, many many hours of use from three different sources and inputs.
Since lip sync, unit has updated firmware from 1.1.4 to 1.1.5 - connected via wireless.

IMAGE is wonderful and everything else I have used has worked perfectly so far.

Will update if any glitches occur.
(above originally posted yesterday)

UPDATE: Today, I saw my second instance of lip sync and dang if it didn't occur with the very same show (Steve Wilco) which was recorded on my OTA HD DVR and fed to the Vizio via HDMI. Since it doesn't occur with any other show or source, I have to wonder if the Wilco producers are doing something different with regard to the audo/video encoding of the show? Tomorrow, if home at the time, I will watch the show live via the Vizio tuner (while also recording it on my DVR) to see if the lip sync is apparent when not passing through the HDMI from DVR to TV.

Another curious thing is that my firmware has reverted from 1.1.5, which I saw yesterday, back to 1.1.4. Did Vizio have a problem with the new firmware update, is this TV just wacky, or is my eyesight so bad I mistook a 4 for a 5 yesterday?

Stay tuned......

How big is the box for this guy? I think I'm going to pick one up, hope it fits in my small SUV.

Also, how are you guys finding out the serial numbers? Do you just ask the workers at the store? I'm probably going to get one at Walmart since they have the 90 day return policy and it's really close to my house. Sorry for the dumb questions.

Really, really glad to hear about the new firmware update fixing the lip sync issue. I think I'm sold as long as a few more people confirm it works!

Is there any word as to when this new firmware is actually going to be pushed out?

It has already begun......just have to wait your turn.....they are pushing out 1000 at a time.

Yes you are correct.....that is why I said a small random sampling of data. Only time will tell when people go back and update their posts. If you buy from amazon someone can post my link as there are lots of people posting there....but amazon will only let you post if you have bought something from them....I doubt shop on amazon.

all the different picture "modes" are nothing more then pre programed picture settings, if you change any of them you are now in a "custom" picture mode....so in the end, all you did was select football mode, then you made some minor setting adustmensts, i notice you bumped up your sharpness, and under color temp, you have "cool" listed, but you changed all of them to your likeing, so you are in a custom color setting as well....

when i got my new tv, i made sure that i made all of my adustments under the custom mode so as to leave the factory settings factory...

at the end of the day, its all subjective to the user, so what looks good to you, might not look good to me....i used the cnet settings as my base and made adjustments from there as none of the factory settings looked good to me, all over the top bright with really bright colors...with the exception of movie, to dark....go figure

here are my settings....

Backlight 60
Brightness 48
contrast 72
color 55
sharpness 5

color cool

--Advanced Picture submenu---
Smooth motion effect: Off
Real Cinema Mode: off
Noise Reduction: Off
MPEG NR: Off
Color Enhancement: Off
Adaptive Luma: Off
Film Mode: Auto
Backlight Control: Off
Ambient Light sensor: Off

Yes, you are correct.......those football factory settings looked much better than any others then I tweaked from there. As I stated earlier the color is in the eye of the beholder. The are too many environmental variables to standardize any settings you have to find something you like. You have to find a base to begin you tweaking.....the easiest way to do this is watch a 1080i channel flip through the modes and watch the colors especially skin tones. Once you find a mode you like start tweaking from there. I could switch all my settings to the "custom" mode but what difference does it make....I have a custom setup already. I will not switch settings just because I change my applications. That will become a nightmare. I treat it like a Ronco machine "set it and forget it".

Actually bought mine right after closing on my house a couple of weeks ago as well. Oh yea, got mine on Amazon at $999, no tax, free shipping.

Anyhow, just to repeat my question since it hit at the end of the last page; has anyone dialed in the perfect settings for gaming yet?

Yes, many people are getting the FW update now. It is either being done via MAC addresses or or serial numbers.

Smart TV's (internet connected) update FW via being pushed out from vendor. Vizio is pushing out 1000 at a time......the problem is they sold 100,000 + sets on black friday alone. So it takes time.

Thanks,

Have a discussion with via Vizio chat and you will find your answer. This is the only issue FW corrected issue that this set has right now. FW wil not fix a defective LCD screen.
