Just announced MOTH EYE Display lens . . . . smile.gif

http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/25/sharp-moth-eye-AQUOS-XL-TVs/

The tech was discussed / announced weeks ago

Here's a example that is shown off at the Recent CEATEC show in Tokyo on 10-2-2012

While its high pixel density mobile displays stole much of the attention at CEATEC 2012, Sharp also has tech destined for bigger screens like this "Moth Eye Panel" that Engadget Japanese took a look at during the show. Thanks to nanoscale irregularities on its surface similar to the eye of a moth it claims to give bright colors and high contrast while cutting down glare as seen above (moth eye panel on the left) The technology isn't in use yet, but Sharp says the film has been produced in 60-, 70- and 80-inch sizes already, so if you thought the company's extra large and Elite HDTVs couldn't get any better, next year's model will probably have at least one way to prove you wrong.

the "Moth Eye" film is applied to the glass on this display case..................

see the reflection of the guy holding the phone who is actually taken the photo ? That's the reflection of the person taking the photo but his image is only really visible on the right side that does not have the "Moth Eye " film lens
the "Moth Eye" film is on the left side of glass case that holds the wine glasses

Didn't i read somewhere in one of these press releases that Sharp was able to embed this "Moth Eye" technology right into the manufacture of LCD panels up to 70" diagonal but that it could not do the same with larger panels, and that a Japanese chemical manufacturer was able to help by applying a thin film over the LCD glass to achieve the same results but it is a somewhat delicate procedure and that users will have to be very careful when cleaning these screens ?
If that is the case i'll pass on it; The last thing i need on top of an already fragile piece of glass full of electronic parts underneath is another layer of even more delicate material...

Apparently they are putting it in the Quatron models. Seems a lot of people here do not like that fourth pixel.

Only problem so far is the silver TV frame. Not going to go over well with the enthusiast crowd here on AVS. I really hope we don't have to wait until second quarter of 13 for this.

I don't think any of them are local dimming, but other than cost there is no reason the 70" and 80" could not be fully array. Keep in mind it has been reported they are supposedly difficult to calibrate because of the moth eye screen. Man could you image an 80" or 90" 4K Elite IGZO IPS MothEye (terrible marketing name), local dimming, full array display. I would have to wait 2-3 years before I could afford it, but it would definitely be my next set.

I'd lay down serious cash if all the features you suggest were included biggrin.gif

One article states "Available in 46, 52, 60, 70 and 80” with a price range between 280,000 up to 1 Million yen"

1 Million yen for the 80" is equal to about $12,500 USD.

They usually cost less once they come here to NA. The Japanese prices include their extremely high VAT tax. If the 70 comes in at 5-6000 I will be very interested. I assume no one will get to see these until CES in January

Is it just me or is this picture a marketing failure? What's the point of those two champaign glasses in-front of the panels? Why not just remove them for a better illustration of glare and reflection, or am I missing something?

It's You .. .. .. your missing that the Champagne glasses are Inside the glass case . . . . .
that is a reflection the photographer with his IPhone taking the photo... his reflection is ON the outer glass panel of the glass case , the glass panel on the outside of the display has only the left side covered with the "Moth Eye" film

Oh ok, I gotcha. At first I thought the photographer's reflection is on the inside black panel, not the outside glass. I guess it's better seeing it in person than a photo. redface.gif

Speaking of good marketing, who do they have running it over at Sharp? Moth Eye, while accurate, has to be the worst branding I have heard of in along time. InvisaGlass, ClearView or just about a million other names would have been better.

I don't know, I think it's a good name. I definitely remember it as opposed to something generic sounding like invisiglass. I'm sure they also choose a name depending on what market they are trying to reach. Even if the price is significantly lower than the $12,500 that they are introducing it at, it will still likely be at least a $5,000 tv. The target market for tv's that expensive are smaller and probably have more AVS types like us. The larger TV buying audience still doesn't even know what the difference is between LCD and plasma.

I agree " Moth Eye " is the tech name of the film no matter who makes it or how many companies are producing different versions of the stuff .
Gorilla glass is also Funky a name as well , but it really does describe what it does in one word .
" Moth Eye " sounds better than " Fly Eye " L O L biggrin.gif
