Then another option is a device that separates the audio from the HDMI and will output it over optical. From what I read Many TVs back then did not pass through 5.1 over optical. Although I have never used it myself.

Here is a 4 port HDMI switch from Monoprice that has optical and coaxial outputs for audio.


Although again I have no personal experience with the device.
