IMG-20121228-WA0000.jpg 101k .jpg file

Hi all - am not very tech savvy so trying to get some input on this - my LCD TV (Samsung 40 inch D series) which just went out of warranty very recently, suddenly developed this fault (shown in photo). Basically, it's 'mirroring' the bottom half of the picture onto the top half :s

Is this fixable, and what's causing this? The TV's been connected to a voltage stabiliser etc

Any help appreciated, thanks.

This is a Samsung tv he's talking about not a Sony.

Sony Bravia KDL-55W900A LED/3D TV.
Sony BDP S6200 3D Blu ray Player.
Sony 5.2-Channel 4K A/V HD Receiver - STRDH540.
Center Channel Speaker: Tivoli Signature Series.
Tower Speakers: Sony SS-MF315's.
Surrounds: Pioneer Satellite Speakers.

At the the theory of operation and symptoms, all digital TVs basically work the the same.

The differences are only in implementation details (e.g. components used, micro-circuitry, firmware etc.).

You might be able to verify if the problem is a 'Gate Tab Bond' issue by applying pressure around the bezel to see if the symptom goes away. Failure is due because the electrical contact in this area is made by pressure.

A service tech would correct the problem by replacing the entire panel, but this is not economically a viable solution, as the assembly typically will cost more then a new TV.

However, some folks have effected a DIY solution by inserting additional high density/rubber material to increase the pressure contact. A search on 'tab' or 'tab bond' should provide more information on this repair (e.g. instructions w/ pictures, youtube videos etc.).

If the problem is not due to the 'tab bond', then you have an issue with the TCON board, or the cable between it and the panel.

Sometimes the cable requires reseating into the connectors and/or contact cleaning.

Replacement TCON boards should be available for around $50-$75.

While checking the cable and board replacement is often a DIY repair, given that you said your not technical, you might not want to attempt.

Alternatively, a qualified service tech repair of the above might cost the better part of a new set (e.g. labor).
