I am trying to research a new TV and am finding it hard to see what models are back lit LED with local dimming. You would think that the manufacture web sites would state that feature.

I am looking mainly in the Samsung & Sony lines

I see now that the Sony is only the XRB line, they are too large and too high priced, so Sony is out.

I think you will find that only the high end Sony panel and the Sharp Elite panels have backlit tech with local dimming. Some of the vanilla Sharp panels are also backlit but no local dimming as far as I know. It seems most are turning to the edge-lit panels as I assume they are cheaper to make.

Just to note that there is a difference between full array LED and direct LED (backlit LED). Full array LED is the fancy kind that high end Sony and Sharp Elite use.

Direct or backlit LED is like regular LCD except with LED instead of CCFL lighting. Direct LED is the thick kind and is usually cheaper than edge lit LED.

All three flavors may or may not come with local dimming.

Thanks for the replys. Would be nice if they just gave the real specs on these thing, guess most people just don't care when they get them.

Any of the Samsung models that are NOT edge lit and have local diming?

There is Full Array Local Dimming and there is Edge Lit Local Dimming
http://reviews.cnet.com/2795-6482_7-399.html

There are no Samsung Full Array Local Dimmings any more , last one was the 2009 UNXXB8500.

In general the Full Array Local Dimmings are the most expensive LEDs (only 4K Edge Lit LEDs are more expensive)

2012 Full Aray Local Dimmings, most of them

Doesn't look like it. From what I saw at Amazon, Samsung offers ES and EH series HDTVs. ES is the edge lit LED (thin kind). EH is the direct (backlit) LED (thick kind) and is the lower line.

Local dimming is only offered on upper ES series.
