If you are talking about the Shootout, here is a note that I received from Rober Zohn, head of the shootout, where he is talking about the Samsung Plasma F8500...

we'll have to wait till the end of March for me to have an actual production unit.

This means the earliest the Shootout can be is early April and that's if he has all the other contenders

Thanks, Jim--good resource. I like the idea of them selecting a good panel for you and pre-calibrating it.

That does help take the fear out of getting a bad panel.

I do like reading this off the website...

Tell us you won't settle for anything short of the very best and add our q/c, break-in and then perfectly calibrate your panel. One of our highly respected Shootout panelists will calibrate your panel for the ultimate day and evening performance.

Makes my fear of getting a 65F8000 with bad banding a little less fearful

That's great! I can't wait to see how these TV's stack up against the competition. Hopefully he throws in some 2012 sets also, just to see how much the PQ has improved.

Is there any update on when we will get more info on these TV's (specs, prices, ect.)? If the 2013 models will be in stores next month, you'd think we'd hear some solid info sometime this month.

There are too many 2013 models that need to be tested to throw in a few 2012 modes. What you can do is use the statistics from last year to compare

Here is the 2011 Shootout to compare

Here is a shot of the 2012 Shootout showing 6 panels tested.

The man standing on the right is Robert Zohn. The bald, shinny head at the bottom of the photo is Dr. Larry Weber who is the inventor of the plasma. In 2011, The Sharp Elite won the Best TV award. The first time an LED/LCD won. In 2012, even thou the Elite's black and contrast level was rated better, the plasma VT50 won.

If I were a conspiracy theorist, I would say: Hey, wait a minute was Dr. Weber being there help give the nod to a plasma as Best TV? Probably not. Because I am an LED fan and want an LED to win, that theory makes me feel better about my LEDs.

Kevin Miller, a great ISF calibrator, is standing to the left.

The shootout is a really great event for anyone that can make it.

Just last night in bed, I was thinking maybe that is something I could do. Take a flight to New York and see the Shootout. I am going to figure out all the costs to see if that could happen. Maybe I should put this on my Bucket List. If I did that, maybe my wife would have to give me the good old, "OK Have Fun"??

Yea, i definitely want to see how the 2012 units stackup against the 2013, i am so excited bout the 2013 F8500 plasma.
I can't see samsung making the exterior look any better in 2014 models, absolutely gorgeous biggrin.gif
Need more info on the upgrade kit(s), hopefully there's a kit for adding PQ & non of the smart hub BS.

SEK-2000/ZA....Any GOOD ?

Yes, you probably are very wise in thinking that. I guess I might be lucky in that area. My wife would rather have me give her money vs diamonds, flowers, gold, etc, With her, I don't have to think: What would she like? I always know. She would like money to go shopping.

Possibly April.

It all depends when the manufactures let their top displays go to market.

I am hoping they will have an OLED along with the Plasma's and LED's

More info regarding the Shootout. Robert said: "Still no date as we are waiting for confirmation from each manufacturer on the launch dates for each flagship display. Likely end of May".

I e-mailed Robert asking if I could stop by.

Here is his response...

Hi Jim,

I would be delighted for you to attend. You would be my VIP guest! Several other folks are flying in from TX, CA and WA as well as Asia and EU.

Still no date as we are waiting for confirmation from each manufacturer on the launch dates for each flagship display. Likely end of May.

Best regards,

-Robert

Just received a note from Robert Zohn after I told him that I will be there.

Looks like he will try to have an OLED and/or a 4k UHD to place into the mix.

I am geting excited.

Jim,

That's great, hope you can find reasonable airfare. I'll keep you posted once we set the date so you can have as much advance notice as possible.

Maybe yes on at least one OLED and likely one or more 4k UHD units. Not firmed up yet, but if we can secure OLED and or 4k UHD, I'm likely to have the best of the 1080p 2013 models compete on the first day and the first two place finishers will go up against the OLEDs and 4k UHDs.

Best,

-Robert

Any word on when we will get more info on the F8000. I remember last week (or the week before), we were going to get more info and specs but the person wasn't allowed to release it yet.

Things have not changed since that notice was posted 4 days ago. That person was Robert Zohn who hosts the annual Shootout

This is definitely the panel I am most interested in -- besides, we're in the LCD section, and everyone seems to be talking about plasmas -- what gives?

I don't think people are really discussing plasmas but the fact that Samsung plasma info as started coming out and we are in hopes that the LED info soon to follow.

If we hookup an external HDD full of our movies via the USB port on the TV it will allow us to play those movies, correct? Any idea if it will play them in 3D if they were Bluray 3D rips? Ifso, any idea which format it would require? ISO? MVC? I would love to use the Smart Hub 2.0 interface for my movie playback instead of XBMC and external apps for 3D.
