Really wish there is a button that cycles through the video modes since it needs to be changed according to ambient lighting and whether viewing in 2D or 3D.

For brightness and contrast there are probably pics on the web one can download and load on the TV through USB to calibrate the two settings.

Another thing to note is I wrote Spears and Munsil an email and it was answered in a few hours which was really helpful.  I was asking about the Color and Tint settings as I couldn't get the green box to be completely black on the blue filter test.  I was told most newer tv's you shouldn't have to adjust the color and tint much so if I couldn't do the test correctly then I shouldn't do that part of the test.  Well I can say my new Vizio M601D-A3r looks amazing.

Just curious if anyone else had any luck with the Disney Wow blu-ray.

I have not used with the WOW or Spears and Munsil disks. I do have an old Digital Video Essentials DVD and I have a version of AVS HD 709 from this very site. I like the AVS HD 709 disk I have very much and can't imagine anything being better. As far the recomendations for not messing with color and tint, I can't really agree fully. I don't usually find tint needing any messing with on most TVs but color is usually set too high by default. On this TV (I have the 70") though, I did have move the tint to -4 and turn the color down to 39. I can't say all three color filters are perfect though. Just that it's as close as I can get and those adjustments are FAR better than out of the box.

I don't know if I would trust such 'pictures'. We don't know the TV handles image files such as jpegs the same as video. We don't even know if it handles anything from the USB the same as it handles things from HDMI.

care to elaberate? I'm open minded enough to listen but the only thing I can think of not on the avs HD 709 disk I can think of is sound calibration. And the avs HD disk has very good fidelity on the patterns.

To name a few the Spears and Munsil disk has audio, lip sync correction adjustments and 3D calibration.

Spears & Munsil includes patterns for the evaluation of "color space" options. This is the only source I've seen address the possible differences between these options. This link includes the full explanation of selecting the appropriate color space option: Choosing a Color Space, 2nd Edition

Spears & Munsil also includes the only 3D specific test patterns I've seen from any source. It also includes various motion patterns to evaluate the video processing performance of your system as far as motion processing, deinterlacing, interpolation, etc.

I also recommend watching this interview with the creators of the disc. Among other things, Don Munsil gives an exceptional explanation of motion blur in this interview. This also gives a good overview of how the disc works. Home Theater Geeks 159 Podcast

Both of the creators of the disc participate in AVS Forums, and they have a thread here: Spears & Munsil HD Benchmark Blu-Ray 2nd Edition

If you want to see everything that is on the disc, it is all listed here: Pattern Help Text, 2nd Edition

It also includes a DVD with test patterns to compare the DVD playback of your Blu-ray player with the Blu-ray playback.

I don't think this in any way diminishes the quality of work that went into the AVS HD 709 program. It is an excellent calibration source, and I do prefer its pattern for setting black level to all others.

I wouldn't trust em more than the Calibration discs either. My original statement is only for those w/o the discs. It won't be worse than just copying someone else's settings.

Just got off the phone with Vizio and they said that the 1.09 update was not for the remote but was to add wifi direct to the TV. But there were bugs and they pulled it. Since I had just bought my TV I won't be getting it. But another update is due this summer that will fix the remote issue and add wifi direct.

I wouldn't keep my hopes up, by summer they'll prob say delayed again. I want the Professional Picture Settings more than the WiFi remote.

If it's not for the remote, then what exactly does this "wifi direct" feature do?

Would that make the TV Miracast compatible?

No miracast and wifi direct are kinda like competing technology. Normally devices have one or the other.

I forgot to mention ... if the 1.09 update is not for adding wifi to the remote, how is it that some people on this thread actually have a wifi-connected remote after they received the latest update?

1.09 does in fact add the capability to use the remote via WiFi. It was part if the update I updated to it and have used it on two out of three of my 80" sets.

And you've actually received the 1.09 update ... when did you get them?

Reviews and price made us go with the Vizio.

As for 3D, I do enjoy it, but I definitely can't say the 3D Blu-rays are not expensive. I personally consider any BD over $20 to be expensive and a lot of the 3D BDs are closer to $30 than to $25. They are definitely expensive and imo part of the reason 3D did not take off. I think 3D would be in a much better state now if active 3D never existed. It was nausea inducing and the glasses were way too impractical.

I'm really hoping 3D BDs dont die out too fast, I think we'll see this year if a lot of the box office hit titles carry 3D versions or not. They really need to release them at $25 though instead of $30.

Don't think you should be posting torrent links here. Also at less than 2GBs per movie there's no way they carry the bitrate and lossless audio BDs have, therefore these are not BD quality.

Curious to know how many out there have received the new firmware update?

Amazing... I can update my other tv (not a Vizio) and my blu-ray players manually, as soon as new firmware is released. I love my new Vizio, but the firmware issue really is turning me off to the company.

Hi All

After some research and lots of store visits I purchased the Vizio M701d-A3R. This TV ROCKS! Vizio was not my first choice since I have historically bought Panasonic or Samsung all plasma's. I bought my set from COSTCO but I did look at Best Buy and some other specialty stores here in the Fort Worth area. COSTCO by far has the absolute best policies if there is an issue. My M701 cost me 1940 plus 89 for an additional 3 years warranty from Square Trade which gives me a total of 5 years protection.

After setting up the M701 my next step was this forum. I have read every single post on this thread and a few others. It has been an educational experience to say the least. One thing I have learned is that it is easy to get bogged down on issues that may or may not occur on any given persons set. Yes I see some light issues when the screen goes totally black for a second or two and yes the remote could be better....and I could go on but I have found any short comings found in the Vizio M701 to be minor in nature. Yes there are some extreme cases out there and I hope for those folks the return/warranty process works as it should. The bottom line for me is that the M701 has a fantastic picture, good features and most of all the price was right. Could I get better this or better that? sure....but I would have paid more and there would more than likely be some minor issue to deal with since no set in this price range is perfect.

The greatest thing about this forum is the people. I have reached out for assistance in picture settings and received quick knowledgeable assistance. My picture looks outstanding to say the least. Thanks folks..... Yes I did do some tweaking of my own and even used an app on my iPhone to finish things off. If anyone needs or wants help from what I have learned please feel free to ask but keep in mind I am no expert like some of the folks on this forum.

My Setup:

Vizio M701d-A3R connected to Yamaha RX-AV720 via HDMI with 5.1 surround
Polk Subwoofer
Mirage wall mounted speakers
Apple TV
Xbox
Sony 3D Blu-Ray Player

I highly recommend Monoprice for cables and wall mounts. Great folks and excellent prices!

Remember it is entertainment and we will always chase technology.................

That makes alot of sense. I got the 1.09 update for my m70 a few weeks ago. It not only fixed the remote but the YouTube app as well. Before when I would try to play videos through my connected phone, the video would stop, buffer and start a few seconds behind where it was. It kept repeating this every 10 seconds or so throughout a video. Now with the update, its fixed!
