This set is available for preorder from Sony direct and J&R. I am a little confused because J&R says edge lit at the same time it clearly states full direct LED backlit. The Sony site doesn't say edge but all the specs are not listed like they do with all their TV's. I know it's not array or local dim. It's a basic set, it's just new. I would prefer backlit opposed to edge lit. It fits the bill for where it's going and the price is right. Is it a typo with J&R? Or I'm missing something.

It's Direct LED like Samsung's EH TVs. This TV will also have FM radio and phone mirroring. it will also have a 60HZ refresh rate. I've been watching this set as its supposed to be a Budget TV and hope the flashlighting and clouding be eliminated with Direct LED

I am going to pre order through Sony direct. The date they have for available is 02/19, next week. I think they offer some kind of discount off of MSRP, not sure though. At the price their asking I doubt I can do any better. It could even go up. If for some reason I don't like it, maybe they will have other models out by then. I'm sure it will be fine. If I remember right, last year at this time all list prices and model numbers were released already.

Set it up no problems. Nice, even picture. I am going to have to play around with the settings a little. I am not sure it has a FM radio. The sound is better then expected. It's a really nice set for the price.

DNINE can you verify if this TV suffers from flashlighting or clouding when viewed in a dark room? Also, does the picture washes out a lot when viewing from the side? Is the black level acceptable? Thanks in advance and I hope you enjoy the TV

No flashlighting, Black is very good. I watched a little bit of Sherlock Holmes 2 which is a dark movie and after fooling around with the settings the picture was nice. It's in a room with no natural light, dark It is hard for me to tell about side viewing because of the way the room is setup. This past Black Friday I picked up a 37 inch JVC LCD not LED for a different room, it's a decent set for the money but the Sony's Black are so much better. I don't know if it's because the Sony is LED.

@DNINE is the screen finish glossy or anti glare?

Also does anyone know when this will hit store shelves at walmart or best buy?

It's kind of matte, there is no glare at all. but it's in a dark room.

Hi DNINE,

I am planning to get this from AMAZON; wondering if 60HZ refresh rate works okay with Motionflow XR 120?
So, I take it that you are really happy with the TV; quality of black; sound, picture ,anti-glare and overall quality?

Appreciate if you could you please take a moment to look at the below link and comment
http://reviews.lcdtvbuyingguide.com/sony-lcd-tv/sony-kdl40r450a.html

This is what I was wondering about:
>>Sony has Direct LED specification on this LCD HDTV, which means that rather than CCFL flourescent backlighting you get LED backlights (full array). This is not to be confused with the more robust and bright edge-lighting LEDs that Sony uses in their higher end models. The LED backlights adds some depth to the TV.

Thanks!

I'm very happy with the set. It's odd because my thinking is edge lit is only better if the set has local dimming. I may be wrong. I think that's where all the uneven lighting comes from
This set doesn't need Internet connection and I don't need super thin.
Next I will get a 4k but that's another story. let me know what you think when you get yours you won't be disappointed. I need some good comparisons for the settings

I read that specific review a week before the set was released. He's not reviewing something that he's seen but the features of different models. Which is one way to buy a TV. But go by a review that someone has actually seen the set, that's better imo.

We got one of these about a week ago at Costco. It's the 4th lcd and 6th HD set for us. Had to fit a 37" wide space in an entertainment center and just fits.

It's a very basic set--only 2 HDMI, no smart features or 3D, but that's all that was required. We have it connected to an HD DirecTV dvr and Panasonic 220 BD player, with an optical cable out to an older HT system.

The screen is matte black when turned off. It is direct lit and ours has absolutely no clouding or flashlighting, no DSE or banding on horizontal pans. Black levels are quite good for an lcd, better than my LG 47LM6400 in another room, but off-angle isn't as good as the LG. It's a 60hz set with either black frame insertion or backlight strobing "motionflow 120". Whichever it is the picture dims a bit when the motionflow feature is turned on. We've watched a few episodes of Game of Thrones with lots of dark scenes and shadow detail's pretty decent. Sound quality is also quite good for a flat panel set.

Overall it reminds me of Sony's EX-500 from a couple or three years ago--very good basic performance without a lot of bells and whistles. I'm much more impressed by a set that totally lacks any of the clouding, flashlighting, dse, etc. that we have to accept on fancier edge-lit sets than I am by the ability to do internet or USB stuff-that's what BD players and Roku boxes are for.

Just looked at this set at BB.

Does the optical output jack in the back of this tv send 5.1 dd?

And whats the purpose of the single round audio output jack? Is it for headphones?

I finally looked in the book Digital Optical output 3 is compatible with PCM/ Dolby Digital. I have a set of cheap wireless headphones hooked into Output 2, Audio out.

Nice looking set.

The Soviet people feared the KGB was watching them through their TV's ........or listening to them through their radios, so they kept them turned off often when they wanted privacy .

Now the NSA/ DHS are in fact watching us with our computers cell phones surveillance cameras drones, satellites etc !

Update : I'm returning this TV because I can no longer stand the judder when panning in movies.

To fix the judder problem I'm going to get a panasonic or another sony that has motion interpolation.

Side note ---- For future buyers, this TV had some big flashlights in all four corners.

I've never had flashlighting on any panasonic led set before.

I just bought this TV yesterday and for the life of me cannot see in the menu where I can turn this feature on or off?

Also, this TV is supposed to have "sound booster", or in the manual it is referred to as "bass booster", but again I can not find this feature anywhere in the TV's menus. Am I missing something here?

Thanks!

I think it's called led motion mode.

But I don't think that controls motion flow.

I called Sony and apparently you have to press the "Home" button to access these features. Not sure how I missed that in the manual? It still seems weird that these features wouldn't be in the "options" menu?

Has anyone noticed that Canada gets the 46" version of this set too ... The 46R450A ! Lucky Canada. I want a non smart 46" set to replace my old now broken 46xbr9. I'm not spending a chunk of change again on a tv ... So the 47w802a is out. Wish this one was available in a 46 in the USA.
