I got my set today. I think it is an excellent set. I had an 46inch 850 for a little over a month, but wanted the bigger size.
I haven't messed with the settings much and won't have time too for a while.
The blacks are deep out of the box, but i think I am loosing some detail at its current settings. I will have to mess with it when i get some time.
The reds were a little hot on the MadMen episode i watched. But seemed ok on other things.
I have no flash lighting, haven't really looked for dead pixels or screen uniformity. It is hard to compare it with the hx850 since its been a few months but my 850 had flash lighting and a little light bleed. My w900 doesn't seem to suffer from those problems.

I am really happy with it.
Design wise it actually looks better than the photos. I wasn't a fan of the new design, but it is kinda nice. the silver bar sony logo thing is still stupid but i don't notice it.

I've now seen this in a shop. It was better in terms of PQ than I had expected, given the lukewarm reviews. And yet deep down I feel this is a half-hearted effort from Sony. And there's a lot of evidence of penny-pinching. I.e.,

(a) The full-array backlighting is gone.

(b) The gorilla glass is gone.

(c) Not only the panel, but also the backlighting has been outsourced.

(d) The foot is chrome-plated or chrome effect plastic.

I find (d) unbelievable really. It's what you would expect from cheap entry-level gear and is tacky. This thing should be exuding class and it's not.

Sony does not make panels anymore. They will not be in the future either. It was one area of Sony's expenditures that got cut to help attempt to make Sony profitable again.

What do you mean?

A. Sony is going to withdraw from the TV business like Pioneer did.

B. Sony is staying in the TV business, but instead of relying on their own manufacturing plant, their TVs are being built by other plants.

Ok....this is interesting. 2 Years old, but it slipped under my radar somehow.

They are saying it has 50ms of input lag compared to a CRT, that is 42ms higher rating then what
HDTVtest stated..... Somthing fishy is going on. Digital versus also said the blacks were at .09 and HDTVtest said .049 .. thats
a large discrepancy as-well... I really wanted to get this for the neext gen systems because of the low input lag... now I dont know who to believe!

What picture setting is it on out of the box? Vivid/Standard? When you say you have no flash lighting but you haven't looked for screen uniformity issues is a little contradictory.

I haven't looked at it on a full white/or 1 color screen for like clouding and such. It was set to standard out of the box. Vivid was insane as a preset, everything was blown out on broadcast TV and apple tv.
I turned off the eco features as well.
The 850 i had had a slight glow on the left corners on an apple tv home screen. This one does not, or have a glow on letterboxing.

somehow i feel to trust more hdtvtest with their leo tool and crt. probably an issue of testing something like gaming mode instead of pc mode, or something similar.

When you said Mad Men had brighter reds than usual was it on Standard? So, without running an actual test for uniformity issues it's pretty good with letterboxed or darker movies while watching in dark environment?

That's weird... they start off by saying its 10ms and then say its 50ms? I'm confused. They also don't state what picture mode is being used. Can anyone explain what's going on here or contact the reviewer?

The only possibilities that I can think of are a) It's a mistranslation (if you look at the byline the review was originally written in a different language before being translated to English) or b) There are regional differences in input lag (assuming this version of the TV was different to other reviews?) Other than that I don't know...

So looking at it in as dark as my living room can get, it is not pitch black. I can tell it is lit. Some scenes are better than others where is does seem to get as black as the bezel. The hot reds are in standard mode, everything I have looked at is default standard mode.
I really need time to set up some setting on it, and play with it. These are all 1st reactions. I did notice being one seat over on my couch lightened the blacks a bit. But that was the same on the HX850 I had.

Spoke to my local best buy sales guy and he told me I should be looking at the Sharp Quattron tv and that the Sony build quality was horrible unless you were looking at an XBR. I'm NOT a Sharp fan at all.

This is just one guy's opinion but i was bummed to hear it when I was getting ready to take a swing at the W900 today. They didn't have it put up on display yet so I couldn't see if for myself yet. For those of you that have the set thus far does it seem like a quality set?

I'm not concerned about the bleeding from the corners as much (all edge lit sets do this for the most part). I just want a set good for gaming, sports and great pq. Thus far that's been the feedback from the majority of reviewers but I'd love to hear some feedback from owners. Any regrets yet?

When you're paying three grand for a 55-inch TV, you'd like to think you're getting close to the best picture quality available. In the case of the Sony W900A it's "not quite." That said, of the handful of current 2013 LED LCD models we have tested it is the best so far, but there is one that is potentially better -- the Samsung F8000 -- and it is about $500 cheaper than the Sony. Look out for a review of the Samsung soon.

However the set is not 3000 and can be purchased for around the same price of the f8000 easily. With Samsung's bad run the past two years not sure there is another consideration.

No way I consider the Vizio M series coming out. I will not buy a high end tv from a company that has made its living on selling low end televisions in Wal-mart.

I just got my W9 delivered today! Very excited. Had to run to work so I didnt get a chance to fully set it up.
Its replacing a Sharp Aquos that I bought in 06 (37D90U). I dont know why people are complaining about the Sony stand.
The TV looks GREAT! To me it doesnt look cheap at all. It doesnt look any cheaper than my Sharp and I paid a small fortune for that!
Amazon priced matched the buy.com deal so it was cheaper than the F8000. I saved over $500!!
The only thing that pissed me off is, the delivery man snapped the cable tie that is reusable!! I'll see if i can get a replacement.
Anyway I'll post impression once i have it fully set up.

F8000 has horrible input lag, so if you want it for gaming that's not the TV to get. And who cares what Cnet says. They have always been biased toward plasma tech.

I'm hoping to get my check from Samsung in time to get the Buy.com price.

To be fair, the F8000 is in line with most other LCDs. LCD HDTVs in general just aren't very good with input lag. But Sony has done some crazy magic with their 2013 sets. I may have to get one next year to use as a gaming display while I keep my F8000 for TV and movies.

Well so far so good. Is it me or does this TV have some seriously rich inky black levels? I'm using the Cinema 1 settings out of the box. Plus I don't see any flash lighting. Mom bought a ES7100 last holiday and that has noticeable
Flash lighting.

Got it today!
Installed the basic cnet settings. Not so impressed...
Ran standard settings.... It started to pop. Vivid was, well Vivid!!!! But over the top, duh

Blacks are Black.... Unless you watch in a blacked out room.
No flash lighting. A small bit of left and right edge uniformity issue on white/bright scenes.
Colors nice!

Look, I've only spent a few hours with her so far, but the potential is there.

Watching bits of Star Trek... Pretty, pretty nice. Space is BLACK!!!

Will have to spend time with calibration and settings.
This will take some time.

To quote the Rocketer...."I like it!"

I'm ready to buy, but I'm torn between the Sony W900a and the Samsung F8000. I've been looking forward to hearing about this tv for months now and I'm eager to hear about experiences of the brave early adopters. Thanks for the input.

Oh, and the build quality looks and feels solid.
This is not a light weight flimsy panel.

The more time I spend with the W900A the more I like it. PQ via cable is awsome. The picture appears to be a bit better than my NX810 I use for the main home theater. Watched a bit of the latest Pirates of the Carribean - Keith Richards never looked as good smile.gif. Looking forward to putting in a blu ray this weekend - probably Avitar. I'm running the out of the box settings and dont have a lot of experience with "customizing" the settings. Any advice would be appreciated.

I dailed in cnet settings but changed the Live Color option to Low instead of off. Watching Finding Nemo on cable
and I think it looks fantastic. The colors have a richness they didn't have before. So far very happy with the W9.
Going to test out some gaming later.
