I think it might be a handshake issue. Maybe the W9 is telling my laptop it only accepts stereo pcm? I can definitely see that only a stereo HDMI signal is going in.

Otherwise it might be that the laptop's sound card for some reason only outputs in stereo.

I guess the only way to find out is to plug the laptop via HDMI into the receiver.

Does anyone get 5.1 outputted via toslink from a HDMI signal?

Yes, first you will need to configure your notebook to output DD in its 5.1 form through HDMI. Connect notebook to A/V receiver directly. Be sure that is set for 5.1 and that there is passhtrough. This depends on the drivers and software you use on your notebook. If you share the model of the notebook we can see what are the proper settings for it.

best, d.

Watched The Amazing Spider Man 2 BluRay tonight. It's a Sony release so it's mastered in 4K w/ xvYCC color. Looks spectacular on the W9. It's not the best super hero film but it's ref quality AV.

+1. And although it wasn't shot natively in 3D, the 3D presentation is pretty good, too.

I was browsing You Tube and I came across a video of the Sony KDL-55W950A which was supposedly released only in Asia. I found out this tv is exactly the same as the W9 BUT.......it had gorilla glass and the back was gloss black!!!! What the hell??? The W950A was beautiful in design so my question is is why in the hell didn't Sony do this with the W9? They are identicle TV's spec wise but yet here in the US they left off the gorilla glass and gloss black back panel? WTF? Sony pulled this same crap with their 2014 Blu ray players the 6200 and the 7200 which again have the same specs but design is different. Why do we get short changed here in the U.S? Don't get me wrong...I love the design of my W9 but it would have looked better if it had the same design as the 55W950A. I know this really isn't something to rant over but DAMN!!!! If you guys who own the W9 and want to see the 55W950A check this out. Like I said same tv but yet different design......

I have my cable box's HDMI going to the TV and the TV's toslink to my receiver. I could not get 5.1 until I enabled 'Bravia Sync'

I want Ed on DVD/Blu-ray!

Has Sony ever said anything about adding new Apps? can we some how add some on our own?

No UFC All Access App
no WWE Access App
no NFL App

just the normal apps like Netflix, etc...and a bunch of Indy apps. But I believe Samsung and others have those other apps I listed.

My Sony S6200 Blu ray player has the NFL app and the WWE app but my W9 don't have them and that sucks if you ask me.

The W900A uses Dragontrail glass made by Asahi Glass company, which is pretty impressive stuff as indicated in the link below. As for the back panel not being glossy, I couldn't care less.

Thanks for posting that turnbowm. I guess Sony must have dropped Gorilla Glass and went with Dragontrail then. I guess my whole rant in that post I made was that I liked the one sheet of glass design and I couldn't understand why Sony didn't incorporate it into the W9. The back of the tv is no big deal really but again I liked how they designed it, but that's just me. That being said I have no issue how the W9 looks but I just cant understand why the designs vary from country to country.

Yea the tv in the video looks insane but besides the one sheet of glass design and the gloss back panel the W9 is the same. I made too much out of it really and it was a stupid rant on my part. I think its amazing that the W9 is still after all this time getting glowing reviews on the net. People are still wanting and looking for them. Just goes to show how good our W9's really were and still are even after Sony stopped making them. Can you imagine if they would have made the W9 in a 65inch size? Why Sony didn't is beyond me. In my humble opinion the W9 outclasses all of Sony's 2014 models.

The XBR-55HX950 that I bought was returned because of a damaged screen and I went with a W900A(new) from Sony as I couldn't find another.

I have a few problems with the W900A:

1. Screen uniformity is poor: The left and right sides of the screen have a 3 inch dim/vignetting/blue tint area. The top and bottom sides of the screen also has dim/vignetting which is only in the center area. I also see horizontal lines or banding on the left and right side of the screen. I use this TV as a PC monitor and this problem is very visible when doing this and is the TV's main use. I haven't seen this problem during video playback but I haven't watched much yet. I'm having to calibrate the TV's backlight/picture/gamma based on what I see in the center of the TV which causes the rest of the screen to be off. My seating position's vertical angle of around -15 to -20 degrees isn't helping either, horizontal angle is dead on center.

Is this problem common in this TV or just edge-lit TV's in general? The hdtvtest.co.uk review of this TV mentions this problem also. This is my first edge-lit TV and the XBR3(direct lit)/HX929/HX950 didn't have this problem. Swapping for another W900A won't fix this problem?

2. HDMI control/Bravia sync issue: I have my PC on HDMI 4 and my Marantz AV7701 on HDMI 1 with PS3/PS4 input sources. When I select my PS3/PS4(both turned off) input on my Marantz AV7701 the TV doesn't change from Cable TV/ PC HDMI 4 to HDMI 1, but the Marantz AV7701 does go to the correct input source. When the TV is on HDMI 1 and I select cable TV/PC HDMI 4 the TV switches the Marantz AV7701 to TV input. Power on and off sync and HDMI ARC works correctly though. With my HX929 when I selected any source other than TV on my Marantz AV7701 the TV would switch to HDMI 1 automatically even with HDMI control set to off for both PS3/PS4.

3. No TV guide: A feature I miss from my HX929 and the W900A sold in Europe has this feature. It looks like Sony wants me to buy a tablet/smart phone and use it for looking up guide information.

MUGEN.....I have none of the issues your experiencing. Maybe you have a bad panel I dont know. As for the Tv Guide? Sony stopped using the tv guide on their tvs awhile ago. That wasnt Sony but Rovi who stopped it. But again what your experiencing video wise may be a bad panel.

Cant wait for this weekend. A couple of friends and I are going to have a mini tv shoot out. The TV's are going to be my W9 and my friends Samsung F8000, W950, W850A and a Panasonic ZT60. I already know which tv is going to win and that is the ZT60 of course. Its going to be held in one of my friends big man cave rooms and its going to be held this Sunday. Why are we doing it? We are doing it for fun and for bragging rights. After its a big cookout and some beers. Should be fun and I will let everyone know the fair and unbiased results!

Hey guys, I need a bit of assistance in choosing a replacement for my w900a. Sony has offered the w950b but I dont think this tv compares to the w900a.

Is there a comparable model I should request or stand firm on receiving another w900a?

Thanks!

If I were in your shoes I would stand firm on receiving another W9 and not let Sony talk you into taking the W950B.

If Sony don't give you a replacement W9 either X850A or B would be a good choice as a replacement but good luck trying to get Sony to give you one of those. Let us know how it all works out for you Ron.

Thanks again bud! It will be a few more business day until I find out what model they intend on sending me. If it is a w9 then, great. If they try to send me w950b I will fight for 1 of the x850 models.

After doing some research I found that the W900A suffers from poor off axis viewing angles, pink color shift and dim edges. I can see all of these problems on my W900A and the first 2 I can see with little movement off axis. I noticed something odd with my W900A when it's turned off and I see the reflection of my window. I see a vertical ripple/wave in the screen on left and right side section when I walk left to right in front of the screen and a horizontal ripple/wave at the top and bottom section of the screen when I move up and down the screen. This is something I've never seen in a LCD before and might be the cause of the problem I'm seeing. I adjusted the settings to the updated ones above but I gave up on setting the gamma.

I've tried everything I could to get HDMI control to work the same way it did with my HX929 but couldn't fix the problem. My guess is this is a bug or a change in software/features. Both the W900A and Marantz AV7701 have the latest firmware.

I contacted Sony about making an exchange for another W900A but was told they are all out of New and Refurbished units. I looked online for another W900A but found nothing but display models(one store had 17 in their retail chain). I was offered every 55" 2013/2014 TV Sony had, but went with the W950B. I wasn't really interested in the 4K models as the 2014 models all have side speakers, which I will never use and don't want to pay for and the X850B only has frame dimming. The 2013 models have slow HDMI chips so they were out. All I was left with is the W950B, which after a little research doesn't look it's going to live up my standards with it's IPS panel. It looks like early batches of the W950B had clouding issues and was resolved after most reviews were put up as people that get replacement TV's notice this problem is gone. The W950B does have a TV guide but it's only for antenna, which is useless to me.

If the W950B doesn't work out, then I get a check in the mail and will keep watching my HX929 with it's faulty panel till it completely gives out or when next year's TVs are released. I don't think we will see anything else than the S90 curved TV this fall which should be announced next week during IFA and I doubt OLED will be ready next year. I just hope full-array back lighting is in a 55" next year.

I will post my full impressions of the W900A when I have time.

I don't think we will see anything else than the S90 curved TV this fall which should be announced next week during IFA and I doubt OLED will be ready next year. I just hope full-array back lighting is in a 55" next year.

I will post my full impressions of the W900A when I have time.
Again MUGEN I aint experincing none of the issues you are with my W9. Pink color shift, Dim Edges none of those and I think the viewing angles are pretty good if you ask me. Much better then my old 46HX850 thats for sure. Your seeing ripples in your screen? It sounds like you have a defective set if your having all these issues. Getting a new W900 is pretty much a lost cause because I was told Sony has no more so your best bet is the W950B. Good luck with it if its the one you go with.
