It's called blooming and is an effect of the local dimming. http://www.cnet.com/news/led-tvs-10-...-need-to-know/

I would stare at it, and it would almost glow and go out of focus.I noticed if i turned contrast way down this would diminish. Glad to know, now Ill quit using the dash board to try to dial in sharpness. Does anyone have any good setting from calibration, or for game mode. Also, using reality creation for game mode, is that bad ?

As I said. I only thought "Blooming" only happened on FALD sets and not edge lit sets such as our W900a. I guess I was wrong and again its not a big deal to me. Last night after handing out Halloween candy the wife and I watched Halloweens 1, 2, 3 plus I watched the second Thor movie. Loving movie nights with the setup we have. That being said anyone on here catch the HDR Monitors Sony is making? Scott Wilkinson did a feature on them and they sound mind blowing as far as PQ goes. Dolby Vision is making them as well. If they ever reach the consumer market it will be the set that replaces my beloved W9. Right now its a wait and see thing but Im a patient guy.

Hello all,

I purhcased the KDL-55W900A back in April, and am experiencing an issue with the TV that I just started noticing.

The issue is rather difficult to explain, but I'll do my best (I've also got a video on youtube). Basically, whenever the camera pans up and down, I see these horizontal bars across the TV; almost like screen tearing, but not quite. This is really noticeable when playing games where you control the camera, and on lighter colors. This is happening on multiple devices (PC, BluRay player, Consoles, etc.).

At first, I thought it was just a glare, but can now confirm that it's definitely not. I don't see the issue when still images are being displayed on the TV.

Am I just being too picky? Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I've included a link to a video that shows the problem (hopefully that's not against the forum rules) and provided the link below.

I was going to provide a screenshot, but it's a lot easier to see in the video. Things I've tried so far:

1. upgrading to the latest firmware (currently has PKG4.470AAA).
2. tried different HDMI cables, devices.
3. changing different picture settings.

If you have any advice, please let me know. I think I'm going to give Sony a call on Thursday to see what they say (hopefully they don't have terrible support).

Thanks for taking the time and reading my post.

It looks to be a vertical banding issue. That is if I am looking at the video correctly. I aint experiencing it on my W9 and I have had mine since May of this year.

Yes, looking at some pictures that's exactly what it looks like (both horizontal and vertical banding). I swear I have the worst luck when it comes to purchasing TVs. Now that I've noticed this, I can't even enjoy watching movies or playing games. I'm going to give Sony a call tomorrow and see what they're willing to do. I doubt they'll be able to replace it since the TV has been discontinued, but hopefully they'll be willing to do something, or else I just wasted $2000.

Thanks for your reply, and giving me an idea of what the issue is.

Well your luck isn't getting any better, there. Sony offers some nice products, but their customer "support" is some of the worst on this planet. Prepare to waste a lot of your time dealing with incompetence, indifference, and a company that will resist doing the right thing at every turn. You'll have to fight to get what you deserve. Sony CS is as bad as Comcast.

You aren't looking at the video correctly. For some reason, the orientation is off but you can see the illumination LED and IR sensor board there at the right side of the unit, so the vertical lines in the video are actually running horizontal across the screen. User also clearly stated the "bars" were horizontal.

Yeah, I was worried about Sony's CS; not looking forward to the phone call (or many calls for that matter). I took the video with my iPad, so the orientation was flipped. I didn't bother fixing the orientation since you could still the issue I was referring to.

Thanks for your reply, and hopefully my CS experience with Sony is better than the experience I had with Toshiba and my last defective TV.

I certainly hope they do something for you as I hate to see a fellow videophile get a bad deal on an expensive TV, but I can tell you that I complained to Sony about backlight bleeding/clouding once a few years back. Sony sent me through the "warranty repair process" which took several days and multiple phone calls. I was forced to send a picture of the issue and when they "couldn't determine the source of the issue" I had to wait until Sony sent an authorized tech out to view the unit. After he showed up, he looked at it for two seconds and said, "Is this an edge-lit LED?" I confirmed and he said, "You should have bought a plasma." He left within 10 minutes of arriving. Twenty-four hours later Sony called and said "there's nothing wrong with your TV." Despite several hours of arguing with multiple departments, they refused to do anything for me even though the TV was still in manufacturer's warranty. As banding falls into the same "uniformity issues of LED LCD" category, I would have to guess they'll give you the same BS treatment. Fair warning but you should definitely try and see what they say. Keep us posted, I'm sure we'd all like to hear how Sony handles your situation.

Lately Sony's customer service has taken a downward spiral that I agree. Their online support dont even have the same people I worked with last year when I was having issues. Those people are gone and the people they have now have a "dont care attitude" which just unexcuseable to me. Their phone support isnt much better these days either. Last year Sony CS seemed to go out of their way to help me out with the issues I had but this year? God help me if I run into any issues! So sicbud good luck and I hope you get some well deserved help you deserve. Like MisterRedShow said keep us informed how everything works out and again I hope you get some postitive resolution to your tv issue.

Well, I just got off the phone with Sony support. The representative was nice, but didn't really understand my issue. He wanted me to try basic troubleshooting, which I've already done. They're now requesting that I email them a copy of my receipt, as well as some screenshots of the issue.

Once they receive my email, they'll decide what they're going to do from there. I don't really have much hope, because I'm sure they're not going to do anything once they see the issue. I was able to take a still picture showing all the black spots on the TV and have posted it here in case anyone is curious.

I'll let you know as soon as I hear back from Sony and what they intend to do about the issue.

These are the perils of the internet--where one person's story becomes the de facto narrative. Yes, just like any company, you can have a bad experience. But ask Samsung customers about their customer service experience. Many people who have dealt with both would rate Sony a much better experience.

I, for one, have had no issues. I've had 2 units replaced for clouding issues over the last 6 years and had them replaced with brand new, upgraded sets. So in my experience, their service is great. But just like a negative opinion, it's merely anectodal--so take anyone's opinion with 3 grains of salt.

All that aside, you might have more success if you can show the issue while it's playing actual content. Another thing I did when I had my first issue was to show them a comparison shot of another set playing the same content.

I understand that everyone's experience with customer service is different. I've also had great customer service with companies that have a bad reputation when it comes to their customer service. It's still nice to hear from others in regard to their experience though.

I couldn't get a good enough picture when actual content was showing, so I included the picture with the Gray background as well as a link to the YouTube video that shows actual content playing, but I'm not sure if they'll watch it or not. Getting a side-by-side comparison would be difficult for me since this is the only TV I have access to.

I received an email from them saying that they're investigating the images and will let me know their decision by Wednesday. If they push back on the issue, then I'll see if I can get better photos of the issue (with actual content playing), because I do think that's a good idea.

Hopefully I'm not left with a $2000 decoration for my house as I'm not really able to use the TV in its current state and would feel too guilty selling it to someone. I'll keep you updates, and I appreciate all the responses.

Before the start of 2014 wth718 I would have agreed with you but it seems this year Sonys customer service and online support have taken a step back. But I will agree with you on one thing and that is Samsungs Customer service is 10 times worse.

You really can't say that, though. You've had a tiny sliver of a percentage of all contacts with them, so you can only speak about your personal experience. That's my original point.

Ok I see your point wth718. Its just latley it seems that the people that have taken over Sony's online support just dont seem to care. The reps that I used to deal with are no longer there or have went to another department and they were good, really good. But it is what it is.

Well, Sony gave me a call back today and said my TV is operating "within specifications", and not to worry about it.

I disagreed, so they transferred me to a product specialist, who then transferred me back to a customer relations agent. The customer relations agent said to send more pictures.

I just got done sending them more pictures, so we'll see what happens now. I'm pretty sure I'm SOL though.

sicbud, I hope everything works out for you. Dont hold your breath on Sony sending you a replacement W9 though because I was told they have no more in stock or any recertified units. If they do send you a replacement it will more then likely be a w950b the W9's replacement model. Good luck and let us know what happens.

Yeah, I know they won't be able to replace it with the same model TV (if they'll even replace it at all). How does the w950b compare to the 55W900A as far as picture quality and input lag? My main attraction tot he 55W900A was the low input lag.

have any of you KDL-55W900A Owners experimented with the image processing settings used in the 'sports mode" presets ? eg, to use some of these same settings for cinema1 and normal tv watching.

i have calibrated my display to the best of my ability in cinema1 mode (with software based calibration DVD's like DVE), but i noticed that when watching some sports event like football (NFL or european soccer in HD for ex) in "sports mode" with its out of the box default settings that some of the added processing and noise suppression settings that it has on by default are really effective at creating a much more 3 dimensional effect with the displayed video (eg, the playing field and the players moving in it seem much more 3 dimensional then in other preset modes or my calibrated cinema2 mode)

looking at what settings sports mode uses compared to my calibrated cinemat1, default vivid, or default normal, etc.. the sports mode uses most of the noise suppression options and adds significantly more image processing (which most reviewers advise to be turned off when calibrating the display for best image). some of the sports mode settings also slightly cheat imho by using much higher settings for colours, edge enhancements, backlight brightness, contrast enhancers etc, but i have turned most of those down (very similar to calibrated cinema1 settings) because those are a bit to disney or tuti-fruti for me

companies like sony and samsung have spent small fortunes on many of those image enhancement features, and i think for this model sony it really shows in the quality of image improvements it produces for sports mode (imho). the lucky owners of oppo 103 Darby units also report significant visual improvements in their video quality from the Darby processor, yet from what i have read in reviews of this processor it actually distorts/modifies the pure video image to add artificial video manipulation elements to make it LOOK better (while actually slightly distorting the video image its pure/true/clean source material),

So, having looked at the manual to determine what most of these settings do, which of those settings are worth using or experimenting with to improve the image in cinema1 mode for watching HD tv, SD movies, and HD bluray's ?

this is a quote from one reviewer that similarly suggests that it might be worth considering using some of these settings
Quote:
Normally detail isn’t something I discuss much, given it’s a 1080p TV, you’re feeding it a digital 1080p signal, so it should be bit-perfect. The KDL-55W900A is, but it has some detail-enhancement features that aren’t just ticks on a marketing sheet. I’d played around with some of these features with the VPL-HW50ES projector, and found the results to be quite impressive. The KDL-55W900A has a multitude of settings for the “Reality Creation,” allowing you to fine tune how much apparent detail it adds, along with how much Noise Filtering (basically grain reduction) you want. I was able to find a setting that I actually liked better than “off” which is my go-to mode for pretty much all picture “enhancing.”

it's not a part of the video, it didn't have it before and doesn't have it on the computer or phone. It's not just one video but many videos have grey bars.
