First of all, let me say I've enjoyed reading (and reading, and reading) this thread!

I'm hopefully a soon-to-be owner of the 55W900A. Several days ago I posted in another less travelled but very specific thread about the 900A compared to the Samsung UN55F7500 (about $500 less). I'm getting the impression there is no comparison. Did anyone else consider this set? I got into that whole area because I can get that Samsung in a 60-inch for about $100 less that the 900A. After reading for several days here and elsewhere, I think the 7500 Samsung would be a mistake.

I also got drawn in at both Best Buy and a local retailer to the Samsung UN55F8000 ($2500 in the 55 inch and $2800 in the 60 inch). That set is amazing looking in form. I have an unexplainable dislike of the stand. I'm a minimalist and to me in conflicts badly with the ultra thin frame and sleek back of the set itself. Anyway, in store the Samsung is quite a bit brighter, but the 900A looks more rich. Feels impossible to tell, though.

I guess my questions are: 1) Should I forget about the Samsung 7500 all together? 2) Assuming I can get past the aesthetic of the frame, is the F8000 worth the extra $500, or is the 900A not only cheaper but a better overall set?

Thanks so much. This has been a big project. Had to reset the furniture layout of the living room to accommodate a larger set. Our 46 inch Samsung is moving up to the bedroom, and the bedroom 40 inch is moving down to the hearth room, to help settle the nightly first floor disputes in who gets to watch what. Of course the furniture move triggered an awesome new cabinet purchase and I was quite pleased with myself when I successfully installed a new jack for the satellite and ethernet in the new location without any outside help! Dish guys are coming out Saturday to upgrade us from the 722 to the Hopper.

Appreciate any comments and sorry for the outdated user name (from when I joined in 2006!) Can't figure out how to change it!

One more thing: any thoughts on pricing as we approach black friday and beyond?

Thanks!

I exchange my first w900a cause I saw some clouding to samsung f8000. Samsung had great picture dont get me wrong but I switch it right back to the w900a. Even though it had clouding the picture quality and color gamut was too good to give up on. Videos pop on the w900a. Its really good. I hope 2014 brings it on.
And for black friday it think ill stay at 1999 its a high end tv. But you ll be able to price match it to $1800 at least

Flickering and shimmering could either be : Too much edge enhancement/sharpening by TV.

Or it's an anti aliasing problem with the game. Which is the most likely cause.

Consoles don't really have the power needed to use high quality anti aliasing.

And PS4 Banding, this is also a source problem. It is due to lower precision rendering buffers. The PS3 suffered it as well and many games do.

here is a pic of my screen on hdmi1 there is zero clouding or banding on my set... when I pan while gaming there is also zero banding.. I panned with over 20 games and zero banding was there... I also found a fix for the shimmering that some people see.... I am now gaming with cinema and calibrated it... the motion flow in this set is powerful enough to not cause any "artifacts" if your using "motion flow" smooth you will see "artifacts"... I hope you guys are happy with your sets......this my hdmi1 there is zero clouding... I changed the hdmi and that solved my small cloud in the bottom left corner its completely gone now....

Why don't you game in game mode, do you find it has worse picture quality if you compare it to other picture settings. I'm curious because i want to buy this tv but i hate game mode actually because it's know to downgrade the picture when using it.

I've owned this set for one full-month now. Playing video games on my 360, PS3, and now my PS4 all in Game Mode, I can say without any question; there's "no downgrading" in any picture quality at all in this mode! I realize we all see things differently from eye-to-eye, and have different opinions on how we personally want our picture quality to be. But this t.v. produces an excellent display whether it's in Game Mode, or any of the several other options that it allows you to view in.

I have to agree with Triton. Game mode does nothing to diminish my enjoyment. My PS4 looks amazing in this set.

Typical syndrome: make a too broad assumption based on a too narrow viewing angle. smile.gif

The mere image quality is perfectly flawless in Game mode. There are not any downsides worth mentioning.

However its a different story when it comes to motion image quality. in this case, first of all it depends on how much FPS the input is delivering. When you're gaming on a PC, then the output often will be true 60fps. However when playing on one of the established consoles (X360/PS3), then a majority of games will output only 30fps effectively (even when packed into 60i/p via pulldown).

In case of true 60fps, Game mode looks OK even in motion. But in case of 30fps input, Game mode is looking quite stuttery with Sample+Hold blurryness (comparable to 24fps movies with MotionFlow=OFF), and there may occur texture flickering which seemingly can only be dimished by a true MotionFlow setting.

Personally, on my X360 I play games where input lag is not a major concern (3rd person adventure), and I much prefer to play with the TV in Cinema mode. Lag is not critical in this case (your brain adapts automatically), but motion quality, to me, is remarkably better with MotionFlow Standard.

Maybe the nextGen consoles will output more true 60fps now? I dunno!

Didee you know your stuff.... AC4 has flickering with game mode.... using cinema with motion flow eliminated it completely.... I thought it had something to do with the games aliasing... I think game mode looks incredible though no loss of anything... colours details all look amazing... so at 60fps games do look perfect...

First off, what system(s) and games are you playing? If I have any of the games that you're playing, I'll check and let you know. As far as my set goes, I haven't had any problem(s) that some are posting about...

PS3, main problem is not bleeding though, I can manage that by lowering brightness/backlight and by enabling led dynamic control.
What really bothers me though are general uniformity issues (DSE/Clouding, not sure). Most noticeable when playing Fifa 14 on the ps3. I really don't notice it during regular cable or movie watching, but on Fifa It really annoys me.

Yeah I might still go with the Samsung 55 Smart TV but I always like Sony TVs and have never had any issues so I might just stay with them so I might get this model but I might wait and see what comes out in 2014 as well. :)

Here is the replacement I got. Why does the hdmi look different? And does this look bad? I noticed my first w900a had your hdmi screen with no clouding. But with this type yoy see clouding?

Vermeer do you have led dynamic control low, standard, off on hdmi 1? I find it strange that you would get different results using different hdmi ports.. Are you sure you are looking with same scene settings on all of them? Note that you can have different cinema settings for each hdmi port, cinema on hdmi1 can differ from cinema on hdmi 2. Change from current to common to change it globally rather than for that specific port, or make sure to dial in the same settings for each port.

I have the Led dynamic control at standard, it does make a difference...

my game mode is free of clouding....but the texture shimmering is worse, i  have read that is a game problem...it only does this with AC4....not COD Ghosts

I have convinced myself to buy this set which I can afford but is it really worth the money? I have started to see a lot of Holiday Sales on the LG and Samsung sets that are half the cost.

Hi New2HD,

Forget about the 7500 all together.  I've had the unique privilege of owning both the F8000, and the W900 within the last 3 months.  In between the two I had the LG LA8600.  The ex girlfriend took the F8000 with her, so I grabbed the 8600 on sale.  It had some great features, but the picture quality was nothing compared to Samsung's.  I thought I was going to go back and get the F8000, but decided to look at Sony's again.  I have an older Bravia that has been very good to me.  While I thought the F8000 was a great TV (I actually liked the stand), my favorite has been the W900.

I don't think the F8000 is worth the $500 bump in price when you compare it to the W900.  Gaming has also been much better for me on the W900.  Not sure if that is important to you or not.  What I like about the W900, is the picture.  Sony didn't care a lot about "Smart" features, and I love that.  The F8000 has a lot of wasted tech in my opinion.  Voice control was terrible.  Smart gestures hardly worked.  Frankly...the LG's magic remote was my most favorite thing to use.  The W900 is the perfect TV for me, and I'm pretty confident you'd enjoy having it in your living room.  Really is a gorgeous TV, both on and off.

Happy shopping!

Jerod

I find myself in the same boat. Basically looks like there's a decent Samsung out there that has the same main specs for $1500 (the F7500), but lacks tricolor, micro dimming, and doesn't have as strong motion control technology. I'm a novice at this stuff so I have no idea if that makes it worth it or not! I only school up for purchases then never keep up with the tech. I guess I've convinced myself those features are worth the extra money. Plus I like the aesthetic better on the Sony. Given this is the family set for the living room and will be such a dominant piece in the room, I'm probably assigning higher value to the aesthetic in the selection process that I should!

Don't think I've seen much under $1,500 without going to 120mHz. I think I'm going to wait for black friday then buy it whether the price drops or not...then monitor prices going forward during the return period and try for a price match if things drop as we approach Christmas.

Hi, Jerod. Thanks for the reply. Very helpful. I'd ruled out the LG, so good to get the feedback to reinforce that decision. I have two Samsungs now (a 46 inch from 2011 and a 40 inch from 2006). They've both been good, but midrange and not great. Feels like it's time for a change to Sony.

On the F8000, those features (which the Samsung rep at BB was really pushing) seemed very gimmicky (voice, motion, seriously?). They also touted the Smart platform. I'm all-in on Apple, and will soon add a Roku box, so I really don't think I care about the Smart platform inside the TV. I know it's been a few years since I've looked, but they have always seemed to be slow and clumsy interfaces, and they get outdated.

Gaming not terribly important. All we have is a Wii now, but I'm tempted by the PS4. Just not enough time right now to get too serious about it!

Thanks again!

What really bothers me though are general uniformity issues (DSE/Clouding, not sure). Most noticeable when playing Fifa 14 on the ps3. I really don't notice it during regular cable or movie watching, but on Fifa It really annoys me.

I only have FIFA14 on my 360 so I wouldn't be able to see what you're experiencing. The only sports game that I'm playing on my PS3 is MLB The Show 14, and don't have any issues there. Sorry I can't help you further with your game...
