I though it would be a good time to start a new thread for this 2013 Sony model. It looks like the release of the 2013 Sony KDL-55W900A will be happening soon. I noticed that B&H Photo has a page for it on their web site as of today (2/17/2013). They are showing it as not available yet, but have it priced at $2798. Sony also has it up on their Sony Store site as "Coming Soon" but with no price. Below are a few links to some information on this new 2013 model.

Please update the thread with any news of this model showing up in stores. Right now it looks like it will only be available in the 55" screen size.

Sony Lists it coming with 4 pairs of glasses. I guess that is the reason for the price increase. B&H's listing may be unofficial as well. I do think this set is more likely to arrive in March vs April.

I imagine it will get closer to 2k this summer. I'd be ok with 2200 if it matches the hx850. Gorilla glass?

$3000 for an edge lit that is only 55 inches is insane. Did we ever find out if this is active or passive 3D? Better spent on the full array 55HX950 before they are all gone.

That's why I picked up a XBR-950HX now...may be the last full array set. BTW really like the PQ of the 950. I do not see any problems on this set. 100% happy. Of course I haven't tried 3D on this set maybe this weekend.

Is the 950 really discontinued early? I rly hope the price drops on the w900a or the 802 will be better...

Otherwise that other company that starts with an S is really going to stomp Sony to the ground despite having their own quality problems.

Oh yah... I meant samsung... Not sharp...

Not officially discontinued, but done producing new ones. Sony's business model all along with the HX950 was to produce fewer sets to keep the price high through the product cycle. Half way through, price is essentially the same, so it's working for them so far.

As far as I know they are still in stock. I don't know,if they are making any new panels though of the 950....never know with Sony. Look at what happened with the 850 model

A 47 inch with passive 3-D, I guess LG made that. Not that care about 3-D too much but it would be much preferable if the W900 had passive technology, obviously for that.

Don't worry about prices. Competition will intensify this year as Chinese companies redouble their effort in the us market. During the financial crisis a lot of the stimulus money in China was invested in building LCD panel factories and LCD research. So now there is a huge overcapacity as well as improved quality. Chinese TV prices will plunge this year and their picture quality will be vastly improved, forcing Japanese and Korean companies to cut prices.

I hope it will be discounted from the start but I doubt it. I might have to start looking at the 802.

Is the 750/802 frame dimming that much worse than local dimming?

Oh i found forum with pictures of the w900a. It is run through a translator.

The W900 (and the 55/65 X900) are sets I'm pretty excited to see this year -- the resurrected "Triluminos" backlighting (using quantum dot vs. full-array RGB like on the XBR8) may be a factor contributing to its higher price. I'm excited to see whether it makes a real difference vs. a traditional edge-lit set like the HX850

Looks sweet on that Polish site. That price will definitely need to come down though before I'll bite on this one.

When is Sony going to learn that they can't keep trying to get a premium price for their TV's in such a competitive market. Samsung will contiue to kick their butts until someone in their marketing department sees the light.

Yeah that would alone make me stay away from it as my main TV. I kind of like the Local Dimming on my HX850. Sure having more zones would be great but overall, it makes a great job at what it does.

Yes local dimming is a must. Frame dimming dims the whole screen which is terrible! Those pictures make the tv look nice but what happend to the monolithic design. This makes me even more upset that I wasnt able to get the hx850. This w900a looks more like a samsung now... The picture quality better be significantly better than the hx850 for me to buy it because I think they took it step back in the design of the tv... The gorilla glass set sony apart for styling in my opinion. Simple black slab vs tacky chrome bezels and chrome stands. Sony's monolithic design reminded me of the JL Audio W7 subwoofer vs the tacky MTX 9500s. If anyone is familiar with car audio they will recognize those names. The W7 was simple design and had the best sound out there not mention how loud it got!!!

I agree. Definitely a step backwards at least design cosmetic wise. Not sure I like the matte screen and bezel compared to the one sheet of gorilla glass on the 850 and 950s.... And don't even get me started on the x900v2 and those silly looking speakers. If the w900a is one step back design wise, then the x900v2 is several leaps back. I would think anyone spending the amount the 55 or 65 models will cost would surely have already invested in an actual surround sound system.

For what it's worth was told that the 900A WILL NOT have gorilla glass. Was told this from 2 people at Sony this week.

Also, with it's new trilumnos display they mentioned that picture quality will be better than both 850 & 950.

I have the Sony 950 so I am interested to see how they stack up picture wise.

On a side note, had a chance to see Sony's 84' 4k tv in person this week and by far it's the best tv picture I have ever seen. Pictures and words do not so it justice when seeing it in person. With that being said, it's not worth 25K. asking price. For that matter no tv is! smile.gif

I agree with you Steve. On the higher end model they have attached speakers. They should see if there is a way to attach a PB13 Ultra to the top of the HDTV then that way you will have your complete sound system attached to the flat panel. Then Sony could manufacture a HEAVYDUTY mount to hold the 500# TV up on the wall and that way they have you locked in to purchase their mount also smile.gif BTW didn't I just see you on another forum?....tongue.gif

I personally didnt like it because of screen glare but it still was a nice design. In my opinion Sonys 2013 sets look more like Samsung. I agree with M2845 that the 4K is a beauty PQ wise and pics dont do it justice but the price is rediculouse. I am glad I have my HX750 and dont regret getting it at all because looking at Sonys new 2013 tv's is a downer for me. If they wanted their tv division to start making money the 2013 sets aint looking good for that to happen. I dont like the direction Sony is going right now.

Do i hear an echo... Lol

At the end of the day if the w900a delivers picture quality it should and the newly designed menu system(it needed it!) then ill consider it. But it will be late in the game when the price drops and perhaps the Apple iTv will be announced. I believe that even if Apple iTV offers similar pq to competitors it will blow them out simply due to it being an apple product... Its crazy but i was in my class of 300 the other day and of all who had laptops, 95% were macbooks... Macbooks are great but we all know they overpriced for the performance you get but suckers like me and tons of university students buy their stuff anyway. Apple fanboy here. But i also love what sony DID with the quality of their tvs. Only time will tell. At least the screen is glossy like the monolithic design
