How is the UB8500 "the very low end" of LG's 2014 line-up? It's down from the 9000-series but not even close to the bottom of their line. It's a 4K set. Actually, I just counted and they have 9-levels of LCD sets in 2014 and the 8500 is third from the top. So even if you were to break their sets into three tiers it would make the top tier. So, yeah, if you classify everything except the flagship as the very low end of their line-up, I guess you're right… The review also said they had observed similar issues in the other LG they had reviewed so far this year. It's not the 9800 so perhaps that will be materially better, but still troubling they would release such bad products so far up their line-up and seems to be a backward step from prior year.

Right, the 8500 is the cheapest by far. It's about 60% the price of the 55" 9700 currently. I'm not surprised it did poorly. LG's IPS panels will never have great contrast and black levels but I think last year 9600, 9650 and 9700 were not as bad as this 8500. It remains to be seen how the 2014 9600 and 9800 fare.

Cheapest by far -- are you kidding? Again, it's not even remotely close to the cheapest LG 2014 TV line-up. There are at least 6 model lines that are cheaper than it. I'm trying to understand your logic for continuing to insist that the 8500 is the bottom or even near the bottom of LG's line-up when that's so obviously not true. What's the point of that?

Your last sentence at least is true: it remains to be seen how the 2014 9xxx models fare.

OK, we're arguing semantics. It's the cheapest LG 4K set by far. It's so much cheaper than the rest of the 4K line that it must have some serious compromises. Usually the cheapest sets in a line drop smart functions. This one did not, so it seems to suffer in other areas. Maybe I'm giving LG too much slack, but I do not consider the 8500 to be very relevant to the 9600 and 9800, so that's why I posted here. I have no axe to grind one way or the other regarding LG. They certainly know how to make bad as well as good TVs.

I got an issue that has come up over the last couple of weeks. Every other day or so, when I turn on the TV I get an error message:

Unable to read My App List because of memory issue. Initialize to resolve issue.

So I have to initialize, the TV reboots and then it seems to work for that day, though the last time I had to initialize it twice to get it to work. Anyone else had this issue? I tried calling VIP support today, but they were closed ... I guess VIP support is only 9-5 or some such thing.

It was swapped for another 84LM9600, but the one I got is a -UB model (January 2014 mfg), as where my previous 84" was a -UA model. And other than the -UB at the end of the model number, the TV is quite a bit different in the way it operates.

The menu is just like the LA9700 4K models, and the LED's completely shut off momentarily when a connected device is powered off, and when a Blu-ray is loading or between the trailers on a Blu-ray. The TV has 3 HDMI ins instead of 4 like my other 84" TV had. All in all the replacement model is nice, and delivers a really impressive picture.smile.gif

Yes, the new 84UB9800 definitely has a nice price point.

Skip this Deal or No?

Got an opportunity to snag the 84LM9600 for $4k brand new including tax and shipping. Regardless the price/deal would you skip this model considering the issues made apparent on this forum? Or considering the price the issues are minor? I dont care about Netflix 4k, but I do care about lip syncing and banding issues. What do you all think?

Wow, $4,000! For a brand new TV that includes tax and shipping, that's one heck of a deal! That's $6,000 off the current retail! Is it from a reputable store?

As far as the TV itself, and if it would be worth buying, well yes and no. For that price, and "if" LG makes good on its word on the September HDMI 2.0/H.265 upgrade, it may be worth it. But, as you mentioned, yes there are banding issues, and lip sync issues.

The replacement 84" I got (84LM9600-UB), has almost no visible banding. Only on certain shades of gray colored backgrounds is it slightly visible. On pretty much everything else it's invisible. Lip sync issues were only a problem with 3D Blu-ray's, and once adjusted in an AV receiver or preamp processor, all was fine.

That was with the -UA model (which is most likely the one you're being offered), the -UB model is another story. Even "some" 2D Blu-ray's are out of sync. Most I've seen are perfectly synced, but then there are a few here and there that are out of sync. Why this is I don't know.

Overall though the 84LM9600 (either -UA or -UB) is a very nice TV, and one that delivers amazing PQ!

LG customer service reps verbally will tell you an upgrade will be available some day at some unspecified price. Someone got a p.r. guy to say as much in an email. None of that is a legally binding assurance, consumer electronics companies have been known to make such claims before and not follow-through, etc. So it's a better than even chance, that you'll have to pay for, but by no means guaranteed. They have to send a tech out and crack open your TV and replace the motherboard. So not a trivial process.

Why do you consider buy dig a reputable store out of curiosity? The fact that they have good reviews on Google? They are not listed as a LG authorized dealer, so LG may or may not provide warranty support.

If you guys didn't know already our tvs on the la9700 thread have been confirmed twice to get a upgrade that will get 4k netflix and 4k 60hz in 4:2:0 until the hdmi 2.0 upgrade. It was delayed (should have been yesterday) but will be by the end of June. Anyway this will include your tvs and the la9650 since they're the same family

Buydig IS listed as an authorized dealer for Sony, Samsung, and LG and Amazon has them in their pricematch list. Look here:

Passed on it for $6k (very tempting) but at $4k I would buy ASAP! Great price! It just sucks that there is so little 4K content out there now.

Well I purchased mine 2 months ago and the best price I could find was $9000.00 so I purchased. Now $6200.00 wow what a drop. LG just entered another 84 into the market stream.
So many problems with using the stock remote. I did order the IR remote from AMAZON only $17.00 Do not have it yet.
I was told by LG there are no other remotes for it. What bull. They said it will not work with an IR remote. More bull.
By accident my VIZIO remote turned the LG OFF and ON so I tried more buttons. Volume U-D Channel U-D last channel worked So I tried the LG remote with the Vizio. It would turn it on-off so that is telling me it is also an IR remote plus RF.
I have a major complaint about this. Great monitor, not much else for connections. Personally I could use the earphone jack without having to shut off the speakers. Vizio and others give you the options of TV speakers ON-OFF. Wish it had an analog sub woofer output.
I have a very good JBL powered sub woofer and would like to connect it. So it sits. I asked LG (No reply at this time) If thy could send me software for the TV to leave any of the audio outputs on with the TV speakers remaining on. Sold my Samsung 65 which had any connection you wanted. Even my Vizio 42 has the LG beat with connections. You would think with the cost, it would have all connections you would ever need. Cannot record anything from the TV. So the recorder is useless also.

LG Upgrade

Hello,
I just got this in few days ago. Great set however....

Has anyone noticed on LGs website the language they use for hardware/ software support for the 9600 has has changed?

It now says:

http://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-84LM9600-led-tv

INTRODUCING LG’S 84 INCH CLASS ULTRA HD TV
This technological triumph in cinema provides marvelous cutting-edge 3D technology similar to the theaters, both in quality and scale. With an enhanced resolution roughly 4X the pixel count of Full HD, it’s nearly impossible to discern a single pixel – even from inches away. Watch everything bigger, richer and in more detail than ever in stunning 4K, the next generation of TV resolution. You can be among the first to bring this new spectacle of LG ULTRA HD TV picture quality and sound to your home theater.

*No “ultra high definition” or “4K” video content is currently available. No broadcast or other standard currently exists for “4K” or “ultra high definition” television and the 84LM9800 may not be compatible with such standards if and when developed.

Never got a response on this so I assume no one has encountered this before. I contacted LG and they simply told me to flash the firmware, I wrote back and said Id id and had the current one. They then said that they were looking for a place that would come out and service the TV and it would take upwards of 6 weeks. I just got a call last night and a voicemail that said they couldn't find one and for me to fax an RMA form and a copy of my Receipt from where I purchased it and fax it to a number.

I assume they are going to send out a replacement, I hope to God they don't want me to send this other one back unless they are sending out someone to help me take it off the wall mount and pack it up. Maybe they will just ship a new model out and let me keep this one. It works picture wise, just doesn't let you navigate the menus. I would use it as a security display monitor or one for my computer. I had to hire 5 people just to get it in the house and mounted on the wall!

I guess this isn't a common error with these TV? Hate having paid so much and have issues, I really thought I had made a good pick on this TV!

Here is to hoping it gets resolved so I can enjoy my shows!

I must say, so far though, I am pretty happy with LG Service. I guess they did try to locate a tech and even though I just don't understand why their Premium Support has bankers hours and their normal technical support is 24/7, they are working on it, as long as they except my proof of purchase.

Now I am a little worried that since I never got a receipt that showed I purchased a 5 year extended warranty, though it reflected the price, that company will accept the receipt if I have issues after the first year. I did register it with their website so hopefully that is enough, or I can get the company I purchased the TV from to send me a receipt that shows I purchased the extended warranty.

Anyway, just thought I would pass on information about this issue since I might be the only one having it

Even though I haven't experienced any 4K content on my TV yet, I will say that this TV continues to impress me with what it can do with 1080p Blu-ray. The other night I decided to re-watch some Blu-ray's I haven't seen in quite a while (and never watched on this TV). The PQ on some that I saw literally left me WOWED!

I watched Real Steel and The Brothers Grimm, and I was just in awe! I can only imagine what 4K will look like! And even if I'm limited to watching 4K movies at 24 Hz, that'll be fine with me.. I mean I really do hope that LG does give us a hardware upgrade come September. But if not, as long as I can connect a device at some point to watch 4K movies at 24 Hz, I'll be happy.

For the here and now, this new 84" I have delivers one heck of an amazing picture! I hope it continues working as good as it has, because it's so cool to just sit back and get immersed in a Blu-ray or TV show. Speaking of TV shows, one that looks downright phenomenal on this TV is the Blu-ray of Arrow. Either love or hate the series, but there is no denying the stellar PQ!

Has anyone called LG and been able to place a preorder for the HDMI 2.0 upgrade?
I was tranferred and then was on hold for a half hour and then the phone just continued to ring but nobody ever picked up! Disappointing customer service to be sure, especially considering the price of this product.

I was wondering if a preorder can be placed or if we just have to wait until it is officially announced and then call and order when they have stock?

Thanks for any feedback.

Which LG did you have?

How does the new Samsung compare?

Thought the 85" Samsung's weren't out yet. Where did you get it?

How is the 4k Netflix on this set? I understand that this was one of the weaknesses of the set.

Thanks

for all the haters out there I happen to love this set and don't regret buying it last year. FWIW I spoke to the executive service dept today and the HDMI 2.0 upgrade (including apparently Netflix 4k streaming) will be available in August. They're also going to come out and do a change which will apparently fix the banding (which I only get when I have the brightness up high).

$4k for this TV? wow that's awesome!!

AV stuff here

Silverlight,

What number did you call to speak to the executive service dept? Were you able to place a preorder for the HDMI 2 upgrade over the phone? If so, will they call you to schedule the installation?
