That cracked me up. Now, I hear what you're saying about local dimming. And I wants it. I wants the precious. My preeeeeciousss.............

But seriously, who do I need to kill to get a freakin TV with local dimming froma reputable brand in at least 70 inches than doesn't require me to sell a kidney?

I spent a while looking for you, and even dove into hisense & tcl (nuthin) and looked everywhere.

Everything is a kidney. Sometimes 2 kidneys and a reproductive organ.

Not me. Don't forget, early reviewers cannot buy from a store and are *never* given the TVs that aren't damn near perfect. I want to see several things reported by users if at all possible, before the usual contrast & color gamut yada yada.
  1. Is there flashlighting
  2. Is there clouding
  3. Despite that its a 3D panel from LG, is the 3D itself implemented as smoothly? (Don't ask what I mean by this. It has to do with frame ordering, and no, I don't understand it nor do I remember where in avsforum I read it, so toss it out if you like).
  4. Does the lack of Dynamic Edge Lighting completely squash all the grays, browns, and blacks to rips in space-time. I had a Samsung briefly that did this and it was absolute misery to watch.

By the way, using camelcamelcamel to chart the price history for the 2012 55HX750 (perhaps closest to the 2013 55W802A), and the 2012 60ex645 (closest to the 2013 60R550A), the Sony price seems to be more or less unmoving for a month and a half.

Keep that in mind if you buy from a place that offers a 30 day price protection guarantee.

I just ordered my KDL-70R550A from Sony. They have it on a special pre-order price of $2699 (MSRP is $3199). Too good (for me anyway) to pass up even site unseen and un-reviewed. Not like I have a whole lot of 70" options from Sony smile.gif so I'll be the first to take a gamble on this one! The sales person said there is no published end date for the pre-order sale - so take your chances on the price going up to MSRP at any time.

This replaces my KDS-60A2000 (basement home theater) and joins my KDL-55NX810 (family room) and KDL-52XBR9 (bedroom).

I have a feeling the standard pricing will be 2700. It may jump after the TV comes out due to demand, but it will probably go right back to 2700.

I'm torn about it. I'm still not sure which of the 3 70"ers to purchase. I guess I'll wait it out and hope the reviews come quick.

Also, that Vizio gets off their asses and post some release dates or something!

With this directv rvu do you just hook the coax directly to the tv? Do you still have to pay the $6 monthly fee like a reciever?

By the way, definitely put these things on the wall. To me, the stands look like half-way to an April Fools joke. Not Samsung-Ugly (that's unparalleled this year), just a little oddly chintzy looking.

Keep in mind everyone, that non-stupidly priced 4K is around the corner, and I absolutely do believe it will come down in price far sooner than most people believe. Why? Ask Seiki, the lastest pricing troublemakers.

A 2K 70" might be "old" very soon. 50", 60", eh, you'll survive. But 70" is pretty dang big, despite the behemoths you [weird smile.gif] RP guys have lurking about.

Around the corner is not going to be within the next three years for a name brand 4k TV in the 70+ range.

The KDL-55NX810 is also in my family room (and I also have a 52 inch in my bedroom albeit it's a Samsung LN52A750 smile.gif ), but going back to the 55NX810, I have owned this TV for about 2 years and I've been very happy with it. I purchased it at a time where most LEDs in the market were plagued by clouding and flashlightng issues, and I had to return 3 different sets from Samsung and Sony until I settled on the 55NX810, which even thou it wasn't 100% free of these issues, it was definitely the one where the issues where minimal, bordering on non-existent.

Since you are literally the first of us to bite the bullet ordering this year's Sony 70 inch offering, I will be EXTREMELY interested to hear what you have to say once you receive your brand spanking new 70 inch behemoth, and I specially want to know how it fares compared with the NX810 regarding picture quality, and also, your thoughts on the only department I'm actually worried about which is clouding ad flashlighting.

Keep us posted!

What if I go for a little bigger screen, just a couple of hundred dollars more, but this is really IT!

The time it took 1080p & 720p sets from being introduced at ces to being under 3k and in my living room. The time it took LCD sets to be introduced above 60 inches at CES to the time they were in my living room. The time it took plasma sets to be introduced at CES to the time they were in my living room. etc. etc. etc. It is a cycle. Every year somebody claims that they will drop in price very quickly. It doesn't happen that quickly. My guess is three years. But it is an educated guess.

Not to mention - we just got 1080p sets 70+ inches to be in the 2k range within the last three years. 4k isn't going to be introduced at the same price point. It just isn't going to happen.

Well time will tell obviously but given Sony's already announced - and imo surprisingly low - pricing of its 55 and 65" 4K sets there is plenty of room for Vizio to come in under them and get these sets into our living rooms for this holiday season at fairly reasonable prices. Not saying same as current 1080p pricing, but at a lower than expected premium.

For a 55 and 65 inch 4k set to be $5000 and $7000, respectively, I doubt we see 70 inch+ 4k sets to be under 3k in less than three years. I will be more than happy to eat my words, but larger panels are unmistakably harder to produce, that is why we see the price jump between 60 to 70, and more significantly between 70 and 80 inchers.

I really have some high hopes for this R550 line for being a really solid budget option, false hope? Possibly. But hope none the less.

I don't believe TGM owns one of these FP's, he merely started a thread for discussion around the models and in preparation for them.

As do I. Particularly when I found out from Rogo that lighting tolerances can be under Sony's control even if they buy an LG panel. It depends on what it is they're buying. Personally, I think it would be abject suicide for them to allow LG QC in that regard.

Yep. I don't have one (no one does): I started this and the W802A thread because of the lack of information about them at the time.

Still looking furiously at this set and the Sharp LC-70LE757

They are about $100 apart on price, and looks like the Sharp will have more features and better picture quality. I have always had Sony sets so this would be a big move. Can't wait to start reading some reviews.

Anybody else looking at these two sets?

Depends on the sources of the panels and ancillary "stuff." I mean jeez existing 70" sets retail from $1500 (Vizio) all the way up to $7000 (Elite). Time will tell but I'm pretty sure they'll be under $3k in under 3 years, maybe even well under 3 years.

You are fooling yourself. When 70 inch 1080p panels first debuted at CES they were well over 3k and were for quite some time. Vizio follows suit after several years of other manufacturers being in the large panel game and creates a budget 70 incher. The point is, 4k will follow the pricing progression that 1080p did, large panels did , and everything other tech that is supposed to be a game changer such as a resolution and source material change.

"Pricing Progression", as you put it, is not some static curve that you can fit to anything regardless of what it is. Going from 720 to 1080 is one nut to crack. Going from 50" substrates to 70" is another. 2K to 4K is another. You cannot move from one to the other and say how they'll be priced.

Back when phillips was promoting it's $13,000 FP (the commercial---"you got to admit it's getting better..." was the very first of the flat panel commercials I ever saw), there was no off-brand also saying "hey, we can do that for $1300."

Then explain to me your incredible insight about quadrupling the pixel count in a 70 inch+ panel which is the hardest to produce in the business and make it feasible to be priced (<$3k) where current above average 70 inch+ TVs (which we can agree would NOT include Vizio) and above average 80 inch TVs are currently NOT priced under.

A 2560x1600 resolution monitor is still $1000. You are talking about a panel that is exceedingly fragile and expensive to produce. Unfortunately manufacturing processes are not going to solve this equation as quickly as the jump from 720p to 1080p.
