I live in Portland Oregon and our costco just lowered the price for a 70" from $2599 minus a $100 instant rebate to $2599 minus a $200 dollar instant rebate. I purchased the television 3 weeks ago and I was given a $100 adjustment today. They basically do a return refund and then sell it at the new price. Regarding doing adjustments, I just used one of the recommended settings and then tweaked it to my liking.

$2349 @ Amazon delivered with a price guarantee and depending on your location, no sales tax.

Mine is supposed to arrive today. Hoping this one shows up undamaged. Arrrg.

FYI for the four 50 inch and larger tvs I've ordered from the web over the years: 50" via FedEx = no damage, 70" via Pilot = no damage, 70" via Pilot = damage, 70" via Pilot (today) = we'll see.

Had to roll back the edits a few days.  Nothing much changed except goofiness added to the spreadsheet by people who don't understand spreadsheets.  Blank line showed up, a pink box, etc.  A "low" setting changed to "high" and then back to "low" without me being able to verify the author.

I'll convert this to a form entry soon.  It's getting a little out of control for the public to mess with.  But then again, I don't want to make this a more standard collaboration where I have to enter each person by hand.

It's all a learning process folks.  I'm getting there.  As a software engineer I'm getting a little frustrated though with google's approach to certain things.....

Here's the current editable link.

Well Vinnie97, one of the kindest and most helpful and respected members here, got one of these. I wonder how much longer before I get such a message...

I bought a 70" today, for $2124.99 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Sony-70-Class-695-diag-R550-Series-LED-Internet-TV-KDL70R550A-/360656362542

Free shipping, but I had to pay 5% tax in Missouri

Should be here next week. I can hardly wait.

Just picked up the 60". I'm upgrading from a Sony EX400. My EX400 had clear text from an HTPC source. Unfortunately the R550 doesn't even come close. I assume if I can't get text looking right then I must be losing video quality as well? Doesn't seem like this set can do 4:4:4 no mater what I try. Is this set just not computer friendly?

Thanks for setting this up. I added my settings. Does anyone notice that if you use the same exact settings under the Standard and Custom heading, the PQ is not similar? (most notable during darker scenes) I actually use many of the settings that were provided by other users, but instead of modifying the settings under the Custom heading, I change it in the Standard heading. It comes out a little different, to my liking. Not sure why. I notice the viewing angles improve under the Standard setting, anyone else see this?

Fry's today has a 70" 3D smart TV advertised for under $1900. One day only, no rain checks. Just says Major Brand. When they did something like this a few months ago it was the 70R550A. They ran out quickly and when I called back then they would not divulge the make or model. Probably won't today either. Could end up being a Sharp but for that price, I'd jump.

This is a common characteristic of almost all tvs. Each picture mode has different "baselines". For example a contrast setting of 70 will actually be higher in Vivid than a contrast setting of 70 in Custom or Movie or Cinema. The baseline settings can be changed per mode, but only in the service menu, which can be a very dangerous place to go.

Yes, I did. Used it on my 50 inch plasma until the 70" Sony arrived Wed. Now using it on that. Eventually it will be going on the HD projector. But, so far I like what I see so I may order another one so that I can keep one on the Sony.

I have not had the Darbee or the Sony long enough to give a valuable opinion yet. But I'll be back....

What is with the pricing jumping around so much? Amazon had the 70" for $2199 a few weeks ago. I went to Best Buy and they had it for $2499 with free 3D blu-ray player. I got them to match Amazon's price and still got the free BR (and 1 year of Hulu plus and Netflix). Shortly after that, BB had it on sale for same price as Amazon for a few days - then both went back up. Glad I got it when I did!

Very happy with the picture once I tweaked it a bit. My settings are pretty close to the ones posted on the spreadsheet. I'd have to say the only weakness is the poor viewing angle, but that doesn't affect anything from my seating area. Love the passive 3D and I have no issues with uneven brightness or any of the other problems that have occasionally shown up on this thread.

If I had to pick on anything, it is the crappy web browser that defaults to Sony's site and is hard to navigate out of. Other internet apps work well - Netflix looks better than it does on my PC.

I have the TV on a stand right now, but the setup is slightly wobbly (jiggles a bit when you walk near it). Thinking of wall mounting it - can anyone recommend a good mount?

No matter where you go, There you are ;)

Here's my post from the Vizio E series thread. Thought it may help those 70 inch shoppers that are on the fence:
Okay, looks like my previous post was deleted. ?? Hmm, anyhow....

I owned the Vizio for about a month. Had problems with the wireless, problems streaming, problems with the apps, problems with lip sync, problems with freezing up and random shut-downs, really bad flashlighting around the edges. But the picture was amazing.

The wife talked me into returning it and getting the Sony for $600 more. Glad (so far) that we did as there have been zero issues (so far) with the Sony.

See if this post gets deleted. I won't continue to post on this thread knocking the Vizio, but I did consider my experience a valid point for those that are having problems with their Vizios just as I did. I'll only post now as answers for any requests to elaborate. Otherwise, see ya on the Sony thread.wink.gif

It was advertized as one day only sale for the 4th of July. It sounds like the unnamed 70" TV was indeed the Sony 70R550A( Prime423 got one). I hope lots of people were able to take advantage.

Pictures posted here will only lie to you. The Sony 550 series offers Good black levels, good color, good reliability, good track record, lots of happy owners, good bang for the buck. Can you find a better picture, sure. Can you find a better price, sure. But, bottom line, most of us are looking for the best bang for the buck.. Unless you can afford anything at any price then I recommend the 550 series.

I'm def aware that pics of other peoples sets are no substitute for being able to see/experience it in person and in my personal viewing environment, but non the less I still like seeing as many as possible.

I can tell ya that after some more tweaking, this thing looks great. Best of all, it works like it should. None of that crap with the internet, apps, lip sync, erratic behavior I got from the Vizio. Honestly, I will NEVER buy Vizio now. Sony has shown me the way!

Also, I do have one concern - the flashlighting. It is of no concern in anything but a black screen. However, I love scifi and wonder how she'll do with scenes of space. Will report back. So far, that is the ONLY "maybe" issue. And I do mean MAYBE.

I can't decided between the 50R550A or the Vizio M551D. I'm replacing a 50" Samsung DLP that I loved and the plus about the Vizio is a slight increase in size and CNET gave the M series a very good review. I just don't know a lot about Vizio, never owned one of there products and that has me a little nervous. Plus, there seems to be many more reports of color bleeding, DSE, banding and flashlighting in the Vizio M series thread. I alos see more lip sync issues posted in the Vizio thread and lip sync is a big pet peeve of mine.

So, I have a few questions about the Sony R550 series since I haven't found many pro-reviews.

First, what apps does this run? I know Netflix and Hulu but what about Vudu, Amazon Instant and CinemaNow?

Haven't seen it mentioned much in this thread but, I'll ask anyway. Anyone had any real issues with lip syncing?

What about video game lag, this is another big concern of mine and the Vizio seems fine according to reports while in game mode but pretty bad with game mode off?

Can you use 3D glasses from movie theaters like you can with the Vizo? My theater is a RealD theater and I've "accidentally" take quite a few pair of 3D glasses home, it'd be nice to have a use for them. How is the 3D performance? Reports about the Vizio are really good, do you think the Sony is on the same level?

My last big concern is viewing angle. My couches in our living room are in a "L" shaped patter so 2 seating positions are on the side about 45 degrees from center and 8' back. Will this 50R550A be really bad for those seats?

Right now I think I'm leaning towards the Sony because most of my concerns above I can overcome expect the viewing angle, that's a big one.
