Just purchased on of these TV's this weekend. Some very slight clouding top left corner but I can live with it.
Overall performance is great and was a straight forward set-up with my Onkyo 609 reciever,PS3,X-Box 360,WD TV Live ect.

Very Happy with the purchase.

New here...had some questions maybe some of you could possibly answer:

I currently still have a sony 46xbr4- which i have had since 2008-great tv- would anyone know how the black levels on the w802 compare to this model as the xbr4 had great black levels when dialed in correctly.

also if you could still get a nx720 with gorilla glass vs the w802- would the nx720 have a better picture due to stronger black levels? also is this set 10 bit color?

Thanks

My mom has the nx720 and I can attest to my W802 having equal black levels. As far as 10 bit color? I do know mine shows 12 bit, but I haven't looked into the why/how behind that at all.

I got to see the NX720 right next to the w802a in the store and I have to say, the NX720 is the better set as far as PQ and design. The 3d on the w802a is amazing though (seriously, you have to see it to believe it). Both are great but if I had to choose between those two itd be the NX720.

I agree with the 3D on the W80... and the 720 is a fantastic set in its own right. To me it surpassed even the 2012 850 model. It was truly one of the last steller 'mid-level' model Sony sets.

So what your saying is that the NX720 was better then the HX850 gator? Now I would agree that its better then the W802 but I beg to differ on its better then the HX850.

Sony Bravia KDL-55W900A LED/3D TV.
Sony BDP S6200 3D Blu ray Player.
Sony 5.2-Channel 4K A/V HD Receiver - STRDH540.

The NX720, HX850, r550a, w802a, w900a, x900a were all next to each other in the store. The NX720 and HX850 were both open box sets, but in great condition. The HX850 did look better then the NX720, but I don't know if it was because I knew it was a higher model, as in the placebo effect. So in my opinion, they are so close that I don't think it would make a difference in home viewing. The HX850 did get a ton of good reviews though. Id be happy with any of them tongue.gif

Java developers, when I saw what has been placed into Java 8 I was immediately reminded of how I've spent so much of my life trying to protect engineers from themselves. Lambda expressions are a horrible idea. Gentlemen: the goal isn't to make code readable for a competent mid-level engineer. The goal is to make code readable for a competent mid-level engineer exhausted and hopped up on caffeine at 3 am. What a disaster Java 8 is!

Maybe sony started producing low quality sets in 2012 to fund their future high quality 4K and OLED sets.

IMO Sony's mid-level line took a hit in quality after 2011.

I disagree gator. The HX850 was and still is an awesome tv that got excellent reviews all over the net and still does today and favors comparably to Sony's HX929 and 950 which were 2 of Sony's best TV's ever made to a lot of people. The only thing is I don't know if the HX850 was a mid level tv or considered a high end tv....Sony says it was considered a high end tv so I don't know. Also I don't think the HX750 was such a bad tv...I know I enjoyed it while I had it. So I wouldn't say that Sony's mid level TV's took a hit in quality after 2011. Now if you want to talk about taking a hit after 2012? Then I would agree somewhat.

Just sayin......

Yeah as Sony states, I too am considering the 850 as a high end set. The 2012 750 mid level set is nothing close to the 2011 720. To each their own, however!

I will agree with you gator that the 2012 750 is nothing close to the 2011 720. That I do agree with you on. And yes I confirmed it with Sony this afternoon that the HX850 was indeed a high end set. Glad I own one. smile.gif

I would have gotten the NX720 or HX850 if it werent for the high input lag frown.gif The w900a is a better set than both PQ wise, but still I love the monolithic design.

I also loved the monolithic design (very easy to clean).

My LG is all one flat surface besides the very bottom frame.

I quiet liked the HX750 but next to the HX850 i found the colours especially skin tones very pale on the 750. Did any one also check out the samsung F6400 before picking up the w802. On a side by side comparison the Sony seemed much better. Although the black bars on the samsung were darker.

The only difference PQ wise between the HX850 and the W900 is the Triluminous feature which ad's nothing to the PQ of the tv. You have Tom Norton over at Home Theater Magazine saying pretty much the same thing and he even goes further by saying that if he had the choice between the HX950 and the W900 he would have taken the HX950. Now when your talking about input lag? I will agree with you there UFO but I aint a gamer so it makes no difference to me. One last thing. I will take the black levels on the HX850 over the W900 anyday.

Also of note: this has been the case both before and after yesterdays firmware update.

EDIT: Turned the TV off, then back on, tried a 6th time and it logged me in finally................ yeah.

This. Only I haven't had any trouble logging into Netflix. However I cannot exit the app without turning the television off. Quite annoying.

The w900a is the same way. In order to exit without powering off the tv, just push the home button on the remote. This does need to be fixed though.

Yup I was just going to say, the workaround appears to be the 'HOME' button.

The W802A was the weakest of the three Sonys for outright black levels, however. The picture wasn't as accomplished as the HX850's, which had much better black, but for such a crude, frame-dimming system it still worked relatively well. The W900A, which also has local dimming, also looked darker than the W802A.

Where the W802A outperformed the more expensive W900 was on shadow detail. The W802A was able to divine more out of the murk in the testing scenes of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II." This is likely due to the relatively low gamma brought on by the frame dimming system, but it's preferable in our view to the washed-out black levels caused by leaving frame dimming turned off.

eek.gifeek.gif Even lower input lag and better shadow detail on the 802a.... not sure if paying more for the W900 is worth it....??

I wonder how the Sony W6 series would stand against the W8.

From what I read, the W6 has a VA panel with deeper blacks pair to the W9, no 3d, lower input lag, shadow detail good but not execellent as this model.

I returned my W8 due to bleeding and the plan was to get another one but I am curious about the W6. Has anybody seen these two sets?
