The W900 page says Local Dimming.

Did you happen to miss it?

Don't read to much into that DELB blurb, it's a typo.

But as i say, it's been the same for the past couple of years. The W9 is the high end, there may be a full led backlit set later in the year but the W9 is the high end, the W8 is mid high.

So the primary difference between the 550 and 802 is.................what? Refresh? If DELB means nothing.........

What makes the W802 better than the R550?

#1 Swiveling stand

#2 Headphone jack

#3 Higher refresh rate.

Those 3 things aren't that big of a deal anyways.

Are both R550 and W802 IPS panels or are they VA?

I'm fairly certain they're LG's IPS, but I cannot be sure. I was mostly hoping for the well-acclaimed Sony S-PVA's.

The W802 is for sure using lg's ips panel (just googled it).

I couldn't find any panel info for the R550 though.

IPS will have worse black levels than VA.

If the R550 is VA then it might just be a better choice than the W802.

Side note.........In the UK sony is offering a 40'' and 46'' version of the W900. eek.gifmad.gif

People in US get stuck with crappy frame dimming for a 46'' set.

While people in the UK get nice local dimming for a 46'' set.

I think there may be a confusion based upon the manufacturers of the panels. The R550 is not going to be VA because LG only made their passives out of IPS (until a recent announcement). I'm wondering if the "local dimming" thing has to do with a hold-over from the previous Sony panels. There's too much up in the air. I'm not believing anything until I hear back from Sony on this one. Apparently no one here trusts what they told me over the phone, so I'll ask them in email. Hopefully I won't get some shmuck reading from the same spec sheets we are.

I found some new info about the dimming types.

#1 Intelligent Dynamic full array local dimming, Controls the light output of individual blocks of these LEDs means the system can light very specific parts of the picture, while leaving others dark.

#2 Dynamic edge local dimming, in which the LEDs in each region are adjusted independently based on picture content and can turn themselves off when the picture is black.

#3 Dynamic edge frame dimming, which doesn't include as many zones, is less precise in its control, and does not completely turn off the LEDs in all-black scenes.

The website that provided me with the above info didn't mention Edge frame dimming (non dynamic) but I'm guessing its the same if not worse than #3.

Active 3D for the 550, passive for the 802 if i am reading the information correct. Different panel sizes, and different panels, IPS 802 PVA 550 i would think based on active and passive tech. So that as well as cosmetic and motionflow would be the differences.

No, the 550 is passive.

The 550 is passive just like the 802.

What source is telling you that the 550 is PVA?

The webpage you posted is correct.

Go under specs tab and look under 3D features.

On a (letterboxed) movie, is there any flashlighting at all from the top? In anything pillarboxed (SD), is there any on the sides?

No flash lighting at all and it has pillarboxed with some videos off YouTube but that's it. In general the screen is good

Do you have the tv in a room with windows? How is the reflection? Is it as bad as a glossy screen?

I have the tv at the end of my bed and this afternoon I had my blinds open because it was nice and sunny and the reflection was actually pretty bad, even tho the tv was facing away from my windows and the light i could see myself in the tv... Also I've noticed with the speakers sometimes they make a weird sound it's hard to explain but can't be right... Otherwise I do love it ..

You guys are still too quick to dismiss (for some reason rolleyes.gif) the "Dynamic LED Edge Backlight" thing. I still haven't heard back from my post on their forum, and I'm re-concocting the question more clearly for sony support now. But here's a 2012 explanation:

Dynamic Edge LED
Save energy and experience contrast that's off the charts.

Contrast is the difference between a good picture and a great picture. By varying the LED backlight, Sony is able to achieve a contrast so high, it can't be measured. LEDs also give better colours, a thinner profile, and higher energy efficiency when compared with fluorescent tubes. Sony's Dynamic Edge LED Backlight uses local dimming to achieve an infinite dynamic contrast ratio.

Don't run to dismiss this thing yet.

Ive pottered around on minecraft and played some halo 4, I was impressed with the performance. Didnt really see any lag in the gaming, Tbh with everyone in this forum i do think its a cool tv but for the £1000 i paid for it was it worth it? I dont think so. The only thing that grabbed my attention was the video they we're playing in the sony centre on the tv it looked hands down amazing and i was more impressed the video was being played through a usb stick but i havent tried and blu-ray movies yet so maybe it will blow me away with that lol

I have $935 in gift cards at Best Buy so I would only be paying about $1100 for the 55 inch. I either want this HDTV or Samsung f7500/7100.
