Is anyone using arc?

I may be crazy but only reason I used optical cord from tv to receiver was for audio from apps on tv to receiver. ARC is strictly for sound right? My denon 2112 has ARC but I guess I just didn't think about using it.....this could possibly fix my Skype no sound issue on external speakers.

I thought my first one was a keeper, I can't say for sure if it had the same pattern, I never tested it from the sides though I'm pretty sure I'd have noticed. The first one had DSE which could only really be seen on panning scenes like football and golf but it bugged me. Then both had issues with the cinema black.

I'm using ARC, but not 100% sure I'll keep using it. For the most part it works great, but every once in a while I'll notice that the sound is coming from my TV, not my receiver. I'm not sure if there's a problem or if my wife is doing something to make it switch the audio output.

When I first hooked everything up, I had the auto-off function on my AVR enabled. If I would pause my DVR for 30 minutes, my AVR would turn off, and the TV would switch the sound to internal speakers. When I figured that out, I disabled auto-off on my AVR.

ARC is not only for sound, but it also allows your TV remote to control your AVR, if it supports that feature. When I turn on/off my TV, my AVR does so also. The volume buttons also control the AVR.

The main reason I may switch would be to simplify things when mounting the TV on the wall. That way I'll only have the 1 HDMI cable and the power cable to worry about hiding.

I did briefly but for some reason - it kept making my Onkyo 609 turn itself back on even up to 15 minutes aftering powering everything off. I've noticed the F8000 seems to make random clicking noises for a period of time after turning it off - like it's not totally off. I suspect that's what kept making my Onkyo turn itself back on.

I switched to optical out from my TV to my Onkyo for Smart Hub stuff.

If you mean bright room light reflections off of the screen, offensive, unless you like to keep an eye out for people sneaking up behind you. The glare is one of my only complaints (along with motion control stuttering) of the set. You really do need to control the brightness of your room with this set. Luckily, the backlight is bright enough to cut through most of the reflections.

Enjoy the ice. I no longer own skates so I'll stay in Florida until the flowers start to bloom. smile.gif

I'll be in the Vermilion Bay, Ontario area fishing Eagle Lake the third week of June. I go there or up to Lac Seul just about every year.

Yes, ARC is hdmi 3. The Anynet+ feature is what allows the TV remote to control other devices (AVR, Blu-Ray player) through the HDMI cable.

I've never used Skype before - so I'm not even sure what to do or how to do it - but can try. I'm assuming I need to have someone available to Skype with - such as setting up my wife with a Skype acct on her phone and try to call her that way?

There is an echo call test your Skype account friends list you can call to see if you hear it ring or try speaking when it answers and you should be able to hear yourself.

I have yet to get Skype to work on only external speakers via digital audio out from tv.

Hi,

I currently own an 65ES8000 that have some minor banding so Best Buy is willing to let me exchange for either a 65F8000 or a 64F8500. The problem I have is trying to decide between the two, I like LED because is bright and it have no Image Retention issues.

But what I have been reading about the plasma 64F8500 lately sound like this issues have been mostly improve. Most report that is as bright as an LED and that Image Retention is non existing although other have reported buzzing sound on some of the units.

What are your thoughts guys 65F8000 or 64F8500?

Thanks

Since you're in the F8000 owners thread, you may get a biased opinion. Personally, I haven't seen the F8500 yet, as I don't spend much time in Best Buy. You might have better luck looking in this thread.

Both sets have their strengths and weaknesses. If you will be watching primarily in a bright room, I'd say go with the F8000. If you will be doing a lot of watching in the dark, I think the F8500 is a better choice.

I think that anybody using the Bright Room scenario to decide really needs to re-evaluate their information. I'm not saying that the F8500 is as bright as the F8000 but for many the difference may not be a determining factor anymore. The F8500 is really bright.

These threads are a revolving door on LED vs. Plasma, aren't they? :P

With all the buzz about the 2013 plasma sets, sometimes I do wonder if I should have gone that route. But I keep reminding myself that I can live with the cons of LED more than I can with plasma. I know that if I went with the latter, and despite what the proponents say about the technology ("Image retention isn't really a problem any more!), I'd be evaluating what I was watching every fifteen minutes.

"Should I stop watching this now? Should I stop playing this game? I better be careful!"

That's not how I want to use my television. And so I'm eager for the day when we'll get a set with both of their pros but neither of their cons. Might that be OLED?

That is what I have gather from several forums too. That is another reason for having such a hard time deciding what to do. It appear that this plasma is bright enough to handle bright rooms, which my case.

Yes, it will be a pain having to be thinking about how long I can actually watch this channel that have a ticker at the bottom or a logo on the corner, etc... For what I have read the F8500 image retention is almost none existing and supposedly if it happen it goes away in a couple minutes after you switch to another TV source or channel, but it still suck having to think about it.
