They had to update the date because they deleted that Yahoo junk.

It never worked right anyway.

The version that out F8K sees is in fact 1215.2.

It is simple to verify , goto: Menu >Support > Contact Samsung = there you will see the complete software set for the F8K.

We just quickly see an abbreviated version , but one and the same , none the less !!

Gary,

Thanks for reminding me where to look for the software version. I had forgotten about it, but you are right, 1215.2 shows up on my set.

I think there is already a ShowTime app , there is a Showtime something.

Might not do any good , I have Starz and the Stars app won`t would with Comcast anymore , Comcast does not support it.

So while I used to have both the Stars & Encore app , I deleted them.

Good luck !!

Sorry to hear about your F8K

I have no idea how they can come up with a satisfactory replacement , because they just don`t make a tv like the F8K.

It quite literally is a dying breed.

Just think about it , at the very least . the "F" was the last to have an animated menu system.

It was the last to include 4 glasses and 2 remotes.

Mine is on it`s way out , no tv will last forever , there is a place next town over where I live , they are supposed to be Samsung Certified , that`s great , but what if you can`t get the part.

I more worried about having to shop for a new tv than I am my F8K failing , but of course it must at some point.

I have pondered over different brands , but there is nothing everyone is making junk.

If you do as much research as I have it will scare the hell out of you to find out your best choice might be Vizio

But all you have to do is put the pieces together , it`s an ugly fit to be sure , but the only fit.

So sad (:::::::::::::::

Yes, quite sad. My TV had been running perfectly with zero issues. Although I had been tempted by various 4k sets, I never saw enough of a difference in PQ to justify moving on from my F8000.

Well , the Sony XBR-75X940D would be a fair to suitable replacement , far better than most , but can you get , is it Square Trade ? anyway , can you get them to play ball ?

That would be the bare minimum , if they offer anything less , ask if the "less has all the features you did not plan on giving up" ?

Stand your ground , after all it is your ground , you paid for the warranty , it was not gifted to you.

Good luck , keep me posted , you got me curious how well they will treat you.

But remember , there are no equivalents to the F8000 , none that have ALL the features , so use that to your advantage

If you don`t mind me asking , what area of the country do you live , I live in NH , and Comcast / Xfinity is not even list as a qualifying cable provider on Starz website , it is lucky your are able to still use them,

Some time they do come in handy. For some reason sometimes the apps have different content than OnDemand , weird !!

Good to go with the Sony , anything less than an 8000 series Samsung , is just not worth it.

People scramble for sales on lesser one only to regret there purchase after the return policy is up !! LOL

Can`t really go wrong with a Sony XBR , I still have 2006 XBR , it has gotten a little dim , but still has a great picture !!

Hi ,

Yes , 1217 is the firmware the completely did away with "Twitter" as well as any App Bound protocols associated with what used to be the "Sync App" section of the "Smart Features" menu , depending on what UR seeing Sync Apps might not be greyed out , if it is not and you click on it the F8K will either goto a black screen or turn off.
Mine has both , sometimes grey / other times not , either way I no longer mess with it.

I honestly posted earlier this year that 1216 would be the last , but Samsung still sees this as a "useable" tv, as soon as they don`t we see won`t anymore the updates will stop.

I hope this helps , PM me if you need more assistance, O____btw , always tell or request an update , if yours is turn to auto , turn it off , better safe than sorry !!

Hey guys, long time no see. Just checking in, my F8000 is still performing tip top shape, and I've yet to replace it. I'm still running 1215 and the settings we decided upon a few pages ago. Any advice as to whether or not I should update firmware?

Thanks

Hi C ,

I would update your firmware , to 1217 , I have been running it and have not had any issues whatsoever/

Sorry to all you kind folk who take the time to post your calibration stats , however I will always maintain that calibration is only need if the TV is broken from the factory , mine was , it was fixed ( new main board ) perfect white balance as well as perfect symmetry ( zero over or under scan ) no dead pixels either. Before the new main board , the TV was a piece of junk , I was on the phone / chat / e-mailed with Samsung and finally one day ALL my HDMI ports died , I called Samsung , how yes that must be that main board , we`ll despatch someone to call you with 24hr`s for in home repair.

Once that was done ( 4 years now ) all has been good , except the power on / off relay is getting old ( power board ) , that might need replacing soon , if there is a new power board to be had. I was advised not to seek repair until the tv fails to turn on , as "just because you don`t hear a click , does not mean it is failing " , so I wait !!

The main problem is in manufacturing , all boards are wave soldered and if there is a cold or cracked solder joint on the main board , then the tv will not show the correct white balance the tv was engineered for .

In other word , sure you can compensate for poor joints through calibration , but in the end the engineered "detent" Color & Tint" should never need adjustments , all other adjustments such as brightness / contrast , minimal at most.

Like I said sorry , but a tv that needs calibrating has a bad solder joint somewhere on the main board and you might need to x-ray every joint to find it or zap the board to see what pops ( send max joules through board ).

OK , enjoy , let me know if I can be of further assistance

Thanks Gary. I saw what you wrote on the update removing sync apps, but have you noticed any picture quality changes or anything else associated with the update?

A while back we were remarking on the HDR format war and the ambiguity with buying a 4k unit due to the mix of missing and present features each model seems to possess. Any change to that with the more recent models? I still stand by my earlier post, that as of now-- I would probably only upgrade to an OLED, given the presence of both hdr 10 and dolbyvision as well as the other benefits of OLED over LCD.

Regarding calibration, I went with the settings DNR94 came up with a while back, which was his attempt to emulate an HDR pic with high contrast and high brightness. I wasn't aware these panels were factory calibrated though, and in lieu of having a professional take a look at my tv I figured some tweaking could help it.

The only issue I've noticed, and it's been over the last year, is that occasionally the TV will 'lock up' when browsing the settings menu. It won't respond to a power off command initially, but when it finally does this corrects the issue. It appears to be a memory or processor issue, as it typically occurs after messing with the settings for an extended period. It hasn't affected my viewing experience so far.

Hi C ,

Sorry for the misunderstanding , the panels are never calibrated from the factory. What I was stating is that once a TV has beed designed and engineered , IF it is built to those standards , calibration would not be needed.

However there are so many variables involved to making a "designed engineered TV". Not only do you have variables in the wave soldering process you also have + & - tolerances as to components ( IC`s , resistors , capacitors etc. ).

All those exacting tolerances play a huge factor in the quality of the end product , a tv that works as engineered.

Has to the picture quality of 1217 , you will be fine.

Has to the format war , both sides have already lost , all you are seeing and hearing about are the remains that lie on the battle fields of Best Buy !!!

So much literally wasted , HD / HDR10 / and what ever else can to tossed in at the last minute.

4K never really got started if you think about it , Samsung /Sony/LG they are all trying to keep 4K on life-support when serval years ago before the Samsung "H" ( they missed G ) , Samsung was already working on 8K.

TVs today are a revolving door , and we ALL get stuck , as I have mentioned , one day my F8K will die , I will go to BB and get what I can.

The sad thing is whatever I come home with on that fateful day will not be what it should or even could be.

Welcome to the future for your viewing pleasure !!! LOL

Jedi,

Thanks for the info. Are you suggesting that a new format for HDR will replace both Dolby and 10, or that neither have been supported enough or caught on enough to justify their continued role in making a purchase decision?

Thanks for the TV specific info as well, very interesting to see all of the variables that play a part in an individual unit's performance. It appears as if it is getting as bad as purchasing a computer monitor, where there are an abundance of units being advertised with no specific information or at least intentionally obscuring specific technical specs one would need to make an informed decision; does this monitor offer a 10 bit panel, what is the true color gamut, why use all of these proprietary technologies which sound oddly close to standard formats, and what type of HDMI, display port does the monitor support?

So many of these issues which lack specificity can lead to one purchasing a monitor which will not allow a person to fully utilize their setup (so you advertise "HDMI" or "Display Port", but make it nearly impossible to find out if it's 2.0 or 1.4...

It's becoming very obnoxious. And like you said, TV wise, it doesn't appear units like the F8k are sold anymore.

Hi C ,

No I am not , technology is moving to fast for either of us to make a correct assumption.

Variations matter not , it is all the same , be it HDIM or Display Port . it will all come down to build quality.

Sadly it all boils downs to build quality and how fast the technology is evolving.

Samsung way back in 2012 was working with Comcast to create an app to replace the cable box. The app did not work , it was not stable plus it literally took over the Smart Hub , as once you hit the smart hub button , you only had one option.

In other words the Comcast app could not work with a weather app , or one would crash.

2015 ( late ) Samsung started working on 8K res ahead of there 4K launch at CES 2016 .

Any and ALL stuff to be bought today is absolute before you pay for it , it used to be you could at least bring it home !! LOL

But not anymore. If you have an F8K you are happy with , find a repair shop in your area and inquire to parts availability in the event your F8K should fail. If no parts are available , then but the cheapest thing you can find at BB and enjoy it as best you can and wait for the format war to end.

Remember HD - DVD versus BlueRay DVD ? Same thing.

Take care , happy to help
